Around that-Saunders was locking topics with 20 pages at that stage, and I remember it reached its third iteration. Of course, the third topic was almost entirely about Zephyr and his cult...

You missed what RC said about Japanese having multiple subsets of characters. It has three-hiragana, katakana, and kanji, and you'd probably need to get hold of a decoder for each one to be on the safe side.

The most logical statistic is post count minus member number. And I think Sara has the lowest there, although it's hard to be sure.

Hoy, hoy.

Nephils vs Sliths reached 30 pages, then 12, then 7, then 5, and then 2 (the last one was, granted, almost entirely comosed of posts saying 'oh noes not this again' and was locked quite quickly.) That makes 56, although that was from memory, so I may be out by a bit. Over 50 is a fairly safe bet, anyway.

Join Us was 25, then 20 twice, then 8. That's 73.

Spiderprise was 20 twice, then 12. That's 52, if you weren't paying attention.

In other words, you have a way to go.

Oh, and Connections beats them all. From any given offshoot.

Actually, a servile with a javelin can do significant damage. Early on I couldn't stand up to more than one of them, and not even one if I didn't get in the first shot.

Zephyr: don't worry, everything's gonna be fine.

IC:

'So, what's your name?'

'You can call me Red Warlock.'

The major paused to look strangely at the new recruit. Was this some kind of joke? If so, the recruit was still playing along with it.

'Very well...Red Warlock. This is the situation. You are being joined to the command of a marksman by the name of Londar, along with one or two more archers from the army. You will be dressed as native archers, and infiltrate King Aizoim's base. There you will act at Londar's discretion-find out their plans, troop movements, how we can destroy them.'

'Assassainate the king?'

'Not yet. Firstly, I doubt very much you'd escape alive. Secondly, if he does die, he's almost bound to be replaced, and his replacement will carry on much as before. Thirdly, there's a traitor within the Imperial Army who's aiding the natives in various ways. We want to find out who that is before we remove the only possible source of that imformation, if you follow me.'

'I do. Uh...when are we starting?'

'Ah, enthusiasm. How refreshing. Tomorrow morning we'll kit you out, and you'll leave early tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime, you'd probably better stick to the camp. Try and find Londar and get acquainted. And now, I have other business. You're dismissed.'

=====

'Senji, eh? You're an unusual height, I must admit.'

The tall recruit ignores this remark. He is used to comments on his height. After a second, the major continues.

'We know, however, that you and your mage friend killed off some gazers. That's not done lightly, I know. We're willing to start you in the army as a lieutenant. You'll be directly answerable to Captain Moran, who is defending Tallport, the city just west of here. I didn't name it, but I do have to keep it intact and in food. And that's where you'll come in, although the captain will tell you more about that. For now, welcome to the army.'

OOC: Exactly what you're doing is in more detail in my previous posts-basically there are mages scrying and when a native raid gets near, they alert you and you rush out to see it off. Have fun...

OOC notes:

Sorry for the story gap, I've been away for a bit.

Zephyr and E-Master, please try to keep your posts relevant to a greater whole. If you want to be attacked by random things, make it a group of goblins or some Aizoans, or something. Plus, neither of you could be members of the Imperial army, (mages are all busy scrying and they don't use halberdiers) so please don't object to the following post.

Anyway, IC:

As Seji and Red Warlock headed towards the Imperial encampment, they were confronted by a pair of sentries.

'Who goes there? Have you clearance to enter the camp?'

Seji is still only semi-conscious, so it is Red Warlock (OOC: Can you give him a proper name? Red Warlock sounds more like a rank) who responds.

'I'm not entirely sure about him. I'm a mage, freelance.'

'Oh yes? I didn't think the natives had discovered magic.'

'What you think has very little bearing on the state of affairs.'

'Well, I still don't have a reason to let you past.'

At this point, Seji stirs himself. Looking up, he tries to speak audibly.

'We want...join army...'

'Join the army? The state you're in?'

Red Warlock interrupts indignantly.

'I'll have you know we've just killed off four gazers. The fact that we're still alive should testify to our fitness. Now, let us in.'

The sentry shrugs.

'Well, you'd better wait while I fetch the sergeant.'

But when the sergeant returns, it is with no less a figure than Major Taren himself. Quickly collecting the two, he leads them into the camp, leaving the sentries staring in confusion.

=====

As Londar approaches the camp, the sentries let him pass without question. Major Taren, however, is slightly less allowing.

'Back so soon? You surely haven't found their base in...oh, it can't have been beyond a day and a half. Why, you couldn't have even crossed the continent in that time.'

'As for that, sir, I don't believe I was properly supplied. But I did find something of importance, very great importance, and not far at all from here.'

The Major waved his hands, irritated at Londar's dramatic pause.

'Were you aware that the number of goblins on the continent, previously hardly anything to speak of, has been mounting up?'

'Well, we have observed something of that kind. The general assumed that they merely move around the continent at random, and are spending some time in the north. But goblins are hardly a threat to trained troops.'

'I agree, sir. Except that I found this on one of them.'

Londar hands Taren the note. The Major takes it, and reads it eagerly. His expression darkens. Before he can say anything, Londar hands him the map he found as well.

'I also found this. And I was surprised at how near to us the natives are-less than a day's journey, though their base is almost impossible to spot if you don't know it's there. Hidden in a short ravine that grows wider down the bottom. They can come out at either end to launch their raids. The ends are disguised as cave mouths, but somehow or other you can't get in-I think there must be some kind of magical protection on them.'

'Indeed? You have done well, Londar, very well. We could well win the war with this. But first, and I think General Warderson will agree, we must find the traitor in our midst. Not a word of this must leak to anyone, understood?'

'Yes, sir.'

'I'll get back to you. For the moment, you deserve a reward. Take this to the camp purser.'

'Thank you, sir.'

'It's me that should be doing the thanking, Londar. Now, run along.'

In his council room, Corim paced uneasily.

'This is ridiculous! We've got massively more manpower than them, more resources, more experience, more magic. Yet every engagement happens at their initiative, our scouts either find nothing or don't return. They're practically defeated, and yet we can't seem to do a thing to them.'

'With respect, sir. There's very little we can do to them apart from wait for them to run out of men. After all, every engagement, even ones they win, must be costing them dearly. Soon they'll be down to just a few groups of raiders, and they won't be a threat.'

'I disagree, Major. Have you looked at the figures for the food coming in? We started with lots of supplies, but they're almost run out. We need to get our farms going soon or there's going to be serious trouble. And as long as the Aizoans carry on destroying farms as soon as they're built, it can't happen.'

The others sat quietly for a minute. Then Major Taren spoke up.

'What about the mages, sir? Haven't they found anything?'

'No. They say that they're searching a whole continent, and it can't take less than a few weeks unless they're lucky somehow. But weeks are what we haven't got! It's no use relying on the mages.'

'Well, I have another suggestion. If the mages can't cover the whole continent, they can cover the farms at least. Put them in the cities with small detachments, and they can detect the raids and send the detachments out to block the raiders. Meanwhile, send out scouts. Magic can't follow trails in the ground, can't look for signs that people have passed. We've scouts who can will find the raiders a lot better.'

'We've tried scouts before. They were mostly killed, before you forget.'

'Yes, sir, but then you sent out the heavy infantry. My recommendation is to send out archers, dressed as natives. Hopefully the Aizoans will ask questions first and shoot later. If we pick the right force, they'll be able to talk their way out of most situations as well.'

'It could work. Very well, Taren. You have my permission to put together such a force. And we'll move the mages too. Colonel Haji, you are in charge of positioning the mages strategically and seeing that they are given the authority they need. Major Doras, make sure the infantry is available to counter the raids. And Taren?'

'Yes, sir?'

'I expect results. Soon.'

'Sir.'

'Thank you, gentlemen. That will be all.'

=========

'Londar, I've called you to my office for a very important reason.'

'What's that?'

The Major sighed.

'"What's that, sir". Do try to remember. And the reason is this. We need a specialised scouting force. They will be archers, disguised as Aiozans. You will, by infiltration or scouting, find the center of operations of the Aizoan natives and report back.'

The young archer stood uncomfortably, considering. The major felt an urge to interrupt the archer's thoughts. The trouble with these young'uns is they don't know an order from a request... But his thoughts were interrupted.

'How long do we have, sir?'

'Less than none. And I mean that. We are actually in a crisis situation for food already.'

'How many men are there, sir?'

'We're still looking. Sor far? Just you.'

General Corim Warderson is the commanding officer of the invasion of Aizo. At first, the invasion went well. Aizo was divided up into lots of small, warring factions, and when the Imperial army arrived, they were unable to settle their differences fast enough to stop the Imperial heavy infantry walking all over their armies. Now, however, things are very different. For one thing, the Imperial invasion has served to cull away the bad leaders. The few remaining Aizoan generals are all survivors, as are their armies. The Aizoans have gathered their forces together under one leader, known as King Aizoim. Aizoim's forces favour lizard cavalry and archers, which has made them very hard to deal with in Aizo's wooded interior. Corim has established cities along the northern shore of Aizo, inhabited mainly by military personnel. Scouting parties now seek to track down the location of the elusive Aizoim. Meanwhile, the native scouting parties are wreaking havoc with Imperial efforts to set up farms, attacking, destroying, and leaving before Imperial garrisons can respond.

Most of the General's hope, though, lies with his mages. Only a few Imperial mages came with the army, and their use in the field was limited until now, but the General keeps them busy as constantly as he dares, scrying the inside of Aizo, looking for traces of the native defenders.

Much attention is also focussed on the new shipyards. Few of the Imperial ships survived the crossing intact, and although the sailors have made basic repairs, the General deemed it wise to build proper shipyards to make sure the ships were in perfect condition before they set off for Pralgad. This process now looks to be completed well before the army is ready to leave.

Those who wish to join this faction must be one of the following:

A soldier in the Imperial army. The majority of the army is heavy infantry, trained mainly to fight with spears, supported by archers. There are also a few knights (in the order of 2-300), although very little of Aizo is proper horse terrain. If you want to be slightly more specialised, you could be a scout or something. If you want to be a mage, there are a very few mages in the army, as mentioned above. PCs may be officers-suitable ranks would be sergeant or captain. The army's command staff comprises 3 Majors and 1 Colonel, in addition to the General. These are all NPCs.

One of the army's train. For this, you could be absolutely anything-provisioner, animal handler, blacksmith, spy-about the only thing you can't be is a warrior, as you'd have been drafted into the army long ago.

A native Aizoan. Either a member of one of the factions who capitulated to Imperial rule, in which case you can be just about anything, or a defecter from Aizoim's army, in which case you'd be either a lizard cavalier or an archer, pretty much. And you'd better have a good IC reason for the defection.

Lastly, please can no-one play a character loyal to Aizoim, since I'm going to be the one deciding what his followers do.

As Kuhr and Delgar arrived outside the inn, where they had been redirected from the temporary HQ, it was almost impossible to determine what was going on. A number of recruits were still cheering something that appeared to have stopped, and a makeshift conference table appeared to have been set up from a bar table. General Azzahr and a woman Delgar didn't recognise were glaring at each other across it, while two other officers tried to keep a productive discussion going.

'That's Abdulhadi', muttered Kuhr, pointing to one of the officers. 'I don't know if I should report to him just yet, though-he looks busy.'

'Well, I'm going to try and work out what they're talking about, anyway.'

Before Delgar can put his plan into action or be reproached for it by Ahurav, he is stopped in his tracks by the other officer, dressed in a colonel's uniform, who now stands up and adresses the crowd.

'We find ourselves in the unfortunate position of being unable to put together a proper strategy, since we don't really know what you can do. Please report to the officers who recruited you, and they will report to us what you are capable of. And if anyone has some suggestions for strategy, then let's hear them now!'

Turning to Kuhr, Delgar shrugs.

'It looks like you're the officer that recruited me. Do you want to go and talk to Abdulhadi now?'

'Well, we might as well. No, wait. I may as well have a complete report. You were hinting at some other ability beyond knowing how to point a gun. Care to tell me what it is?'

'I suppose so. You'd find out soon enough anyway. I create illusions, magical ones. Some of them quite good, although they take time to work on, but I can produce a reasonable likeness of most small things fairly quickly, if necessary.'

Kuhr frowned. 'Well, that might turn out handy. Certainly the lieutenant will think of some way to use it. Come on, now.'

Zephyr: your 'personality' section is soley about his style of fighting. With the result that he doesn't actually have a personality. (OK, you used the one word 'shifty', but that's it as far as I can see). While I'm not going to definitively predict TM's decision, you might want to think about that whether he accepts or rejects you.

IC:

Arriving at the gunsmith's, Delgar let himself in. A small group of civilians was being handed guns by the very reluctant looking sergeant. It was to him that Delgar adressed himself.

'Have you a moment, my good sir?'

'What, are you another of these recruits? I suppose one of the brass has qualified you to take one of my guns on the basis that you can hit a door at ten feet, and you want your prize so you can make off with it?'

'Not at all. In point of fact I am not yet even a recruit, although when I am I do not intend to return here. I was merely wondering where my services might be volunteered.'

'Well now...the recruiting officer was sent to the inn. His orders were to bring whoever he managed to press into service back here to join up with those already there, and give firearms to those who felt they needed them. If you just wait around, I'm sure...'

'Thank you, my good man.'

The sergeant turned around to fetch another crate of gunpowder, then opening it, began to apportion it out to the militiamen.

'So what services were you offering, then? Not meaning to offend, but I can hardly see you as a knight in shining armour. And if you don't need a gun, what are you going to fight with?'

'I have my own...abilities. And I am armed.'

Opening his cloak, Delgar removed his pistol and showed it to the sergeant.

'You certainly are. Do you need any powder for that, while I'm about it?'

'No, thank you. I have adequate powder and shot about my person.'

'Well, I suppose that leaves more for me. I'm Kuhr, by the way. Supply sergeant.'

'Delgar. I'm a merchant, at least in the normal run of things. Pleased to meet you.'

Delgar stood up, and leaned out of his window. How was he to finish the accounts with all this noise?

'Hey! You there! Quiet it down!'

The interlocutors below ignored him completely.

'It can't be!'

'Don't waste my time. It is, and that's all.'

'But what about the army? What about Letzttich?'

'Who knows? I don't. But this much is true: Glider Ballistas will be dropping troops into the city within the hour. They're calling for anyone who can shoot to come to the gunsmiths for an emergency defense. I know you can shoot. Come on.'

The two move on, but the noise outside only increases. People are running here and there-panicking people, soldiers, and members of the very newly-formed militia. Delgar shrank back from the window. Turning to his desk, he quickly picked up his papers, returned them to the safe on the wall, and locked it, restoring the disguise charm. Then he descended, and ran to his storeroom.

The trouble with being a wine merchant, he reflected glumly, is that when your city is invaded, you won't keep your stock past the end of the day. Jamerson down the road with his carpentry-how I laughed...and look who's laughing now...

Looking around, he saw his private weapon stash. Three swords, one strictly ornamental, one a great useless cavalry sabre that had belonged to his grandfather, and his own sword...not that he was any great swordsman, but he knew how to hold a rapier, and that was often all that was required. Delgar looked briefly at the ancient musket, but he wasn't even sure he knew how to load it, let alone which end to stand when you fired the thing. The pistol, however, was worth taking. A very new model that had cost him slightly more than he would have liked to spend on it, the thing gave him six shots before he had to reload, although the process of reloading had taken Delgar several minutes the one time he'd tried it. If he got up close enough, he couldn't miss, and a hit just about anywhere was enough to deal with an enemy. With a bit of luck, he'd be able to do his share. Maybe his wine cellars would still be full the next day.

Buckling the rapier carefully inside his cloak, and concealing the pistol in an inside pocket, he locked up his storeroom and house and proceeded, rather cautiously, to the gunsmith's.

OOC: Although I've hardly alluded to it, Delgar is an illusionist. He's capable of making himself invisible and creating an illusory double, although that's about the limit of what he can do at once, and he can't keep it up for too long (read: a five-ten minute period is OK, but not much longer too regularly.) And no, he isn't a good shot at all with the pistol, although he can use the rapier to a reasonable degree of proficiency (and he only needs to go invisible for a few seconds to take someone down with it, after all.)
