Not only have England lost, they have had the bad taste to lose in such a way that they could have won had the referee made one of his decisions the other way. Do they not realise that this is the number one way of ensuring that the average fan will now not shut up for the next freakin' year? Couldn't they have just failed to score at all, or something?

'The fact of the matter is that we don't know how much time we've got, but it isn't long. They've got a mage captive, and sooner or later they'll force him to channel the stone and summon a demon lord through the portal. If that happens, we're doomed, but who knows how strong-willed the mage is. How much rest do you need?'

Alex considers.

'If you give me maybe six hours, I should be OK. Maybe you could use the time to scout?'

Vor nods.

'Yes, we can't start until the mage falls asleep anyway: the most powerful demons will be watching the Stone while he's awake in the hope that he succumbs. Ray, Sadith, do either of you have much experience in moving quietly? If you do, you could try and scout out the temple. Meanwhile, everyone may as well come to my hideout. It's stood up to a couple weeks of demon prying, so we'll be fairly safe there. Unless anyone else from the relief mission was likely to be coming this way?'

Ray frowned.

'I don't think so. Most of those I heard said they were going to regroup at Selger. Sadith and I only arrived here following Eferas, and Alex...'

Alex nodded. 'Well, I was pretty much lost until I stumbled into you. I was one of the last out of that tunnel, though, so the others probably stayed together slightly better. Most of them will be at Selger by now.'

'In that case, come this way. We've been out in the open long enough already. Hopefully anyone else who comes here will see the demon camp and turn back.'

Turning, Vor led the way to the side of the hill, where the valley walls sloped sharply up. Quickly waving his hands and muttering under his breath, he waved the party forward. Just before they began to doubt his sanity, a small opening appeared, and they quickly stepped through. As the last one in, Vor restored the illusion, before going to his storecupboards to look for food.

'Which mage? I don't recall a mage among the survivors.'

'Ah, no, Vor. The King sent a relief mission to destroy the demons. One of the men on it, a mage called Eferas, was captured by them.'

'Is that where Gareth came from?'

'Yes, he was also in the relief force. But he's not gone over to the demons. Which means we have to rescue him.'

Vor abruptly sat down.

'This makes things all the more complicated. You see, I had intended to have you steal the Stone of Thunder, and use it on Sylvian so that he could cleanse the temple. But now there is a mage...'

Before Vor could continue, Ray broke in.

'Vor, what does the Stone of Thunder do?'

'Many things. The demons have been using it to power the portal; now that they have brought it closer to the portal, they are probably bringing larger demons through, and if they can force this mage to channel it, they can probably summon a demon lord. Its purpose, though, was to create an avatar of Hiram. This is why I am so happy to have found Sylvian: only the priests of Hiram can be made avatars, and I wouldn't stand up to many demons even after I'd been made an avatar.'

Sylvian nodded. 'The first incursion was stopped by the High Priest. Wielding the Stone of Thunder, he banished a demon lord and his whole host, and established the temple.'

'I don't want to pit Sylvian against the demon lord, though', interjected Vor. 'But if they've captured a mage, they'll be trying to force him to channel the Stone, and doubtless the strongest demons will be in its presence. We'll have to wait until he's asleep. Even then, the ritual to empower Sylvian will take time.'

Sadith frowned. 'How long?'

'Oh, about ten minutes. If we could somehow free the mage first and gain his help, it would be less, but I'm sure he'd assume we were the demons trying to trick him.'

'So you want us to get into the most heavily guarded room in the temple, steal a vastly powerful magical artifact, run away, and hide somewhere where we'll go unnoticed for a full ten minutes with every demon in the temple after us?'

Vor shook his head. 'Actually, the ritual has to be performed in the temple. I know it sounds hard, but the fact is that even if we couldn't perform the ritual, we'd have to steal the Stone. If they can summon the demon lord, it'll wipe the valley of all life in a matter of hours, and then go on a war of conquest. That's what happened before, only then the priests of Hiram were powerful enough to stand up to them. Now? I doubt such a force exists anywhere.'

Ray shook his head. 'Vor, it's not just hard, it's completely impossible. Maybe we could sneak in there-after all, they won't be expecting us exactly-but they'll know when we steal the Stone. And we'll never hold them off for anything like ten minutes.'

The next voice to speak belonged to none of the four. 'Ah, did you say a mage could speed up the ritual?'

Ray turned, his spear launcher already levelled, but the face confronting him was a known one.

'Alex? How did you get here?'

You can get said nutrition and trace elements without meat, but unfortunately most veggies don't know how and end up much less healthy individuals, albeit thinner.

After the demons had passed, Vor stayed at the crack almost continuously. Now the demons had a human in their power, it was only a matter of time before they used the Stone of Thunder. Maybe days, depending on how intelligent the human was, but only a matter of time.

Thankfully, the first person appeared not an hour after the demons had entered the temple. Maybe they had been following their tracks, maybe not, but at last Vor had hope. Rushing to the secret entrance, he scrambled down the hillside, intercepting the approaching figure. As he closed on them, he recognised the typical gard of a warrior-priest of the Thunder God.

'Excuse me?'

The priest turned to face Vor, apparently somewhat surprised.

'Who are you? And what are you doing here?'

'Me? I'm Vor, the temple librarian. Listen, I have to tell you...'

'How have you hidden so close to the demons?'

'Oh, I have some illusion magic I used. Listen, this is important. The demons have got the Stone of Thunder.'

'How do you know? And why are you telling me?'

'Well, I've been watching them. Look, they want to use it to make the portal in the temple more powerful, so they can summon their lord here. If they do, we'll be dead in seconds. You have to steal the Stone first.'

The priest shook his head.

'I am not here to sneak and steal, I am here to cleanse the temple. What do you take me for?'

'What? But you'll never do it on your own! You haven't a hope. Look, steal the stone first. With it, you might just be able to take on the demons. As you are, well...'

'Why have you not stolen the stone, then?'

'Because they'd know it was missing, and then they'd search for it magically and find it before I could safeguard it. No, the only way is for you to take it.'

'But I cannot wield it; the Stone must only be wielded by the High Priest.'

'Nonsense. The ritual can be conducted by anyone. Provided they worship the right god, they're in. Look, I don't know what's holding you back. It's the only way we can possibly remove the demons from the temple.'

Here Vor sees he has struck a chord. The priest frowns, then nods acquiesance.

'If what you say is true, then I suppose your plan is best. But how am I to know you are not a demon?'

'If I were, you'd be surrounded by now. There's enough of them up there to kill you and probably a hundred others like you. I could still be tricking you, but it'd probably not be worth my while.'

As the priest finally stopped raising objections, the figure of Sadith appeared around a nearby bush.

'Sylvian? At least we've found you. Who is this you're talking to?'

Um, you do realise that that idea is among the most overused in the history of, say, the universe? Also that only one or two of the books that used such an idea were ever good? No, I thought not.

Vor stared at the paper. These numbers were right, they had to be, but the implications...he sighed. Three days of research and calculation, and he was too tired to make sense of his results. Maybe a little sleep was in order.

Rising, he went to the crack in the rock for a last peek, then set the eye in place. Turning, he stepped over to the sleeping mat in the corner, and was asleep almost before he'd touched the ground.

The demons were stirring again. As Vor looked through the crack in the rock that sheltered his hiding place, he could see a small party of lesser demons leaving the temple: a hunting party, perhaps? Or maybe rescue had finally come, maybe the demons were scouting against a large invading force?

Vor dropped down from the crack, sighing. Giving up hope was not an option, but it hardly helped to look for aid in every small movement. At least his hiding place was secure; he could last almost another month with the food he had. But food was not the foremost constraint on his remaining time.

Turning back to his desk, he tried to concentrate on his equations once again. The further he pursued them, the more complex they became, but a solution was at last in sight. He couldn't fall asleep just yet, or he'd never pick up this chain of thought again. Reaching for fresh parchment, he began to write.

Or you could spend five years making a graphics engine and then have the player run around a randomly generated universe clicking on things that cause random events. Oh, and there'd be a complicated statistic system but there's absolutely no documentation explaining what any of the statistics do, and the names are totally misleading.

Pfft. I actually found the line 'impress the governor's daughter with your dancing skills' while looking through the website...

It looks like quite a good game, if I'm honest, but it's still set in a fake-swashbuckling pirate universe rather than a real one. I'm not so sure that's a flaw, either, but the point stands that a realistic pirate setting wouldn't exactly be child-friendly.

You mean Pirates of the Carribean? Yes, it's good, and I don't doubt you can make good games and films in fake-swashbuckling-pirate universes (I certainly enjoyed the first three Monkey Islands), but not in the real world of pirates.

Pirates? You mean something like 'arr, me hearties'? A pirate game that was even vaguely realistic would rapidly replace GTA as number one scapegoat for everything wrong with the nation's youth were it ever to catch on. Pirates spent the time they didn't spend running from better-armed ships preying on those too weak to defend themselves, and then getting drunk in some out-of-the-way port where they were running a half-hearted protection racket.

Vikings-incidentally, viking is the old Norse verb for raiding-would hardly be any more seemly, being as they, again, never really attacked anywhere they weren't sure of an overwhelming victory: defenceless seaside towns, monasteries, and so forth. Neither setting really lends itself to an RP...

The alternative is faction-based RPs, where you control a large group of people (most likely a whole nation) and time passes, for the main part, somewhat faster than it does in a character-based RP.

So it's just a co-incidence that every one of your characters since for ever has been a one-man army? Well, maybe. But still, try creating a character who's only good at one thing, where that one thing is not using an infinite-ammo-crossbow-of-death, or some such.

And Zephyr, the reason you dislike normal characters is because you always want your character to be capable of being a one-man army. Normal people have to work as part of a team, or they accomplish nothing, except their own deaths. If you were prepared to try a character who wasn't capable of doing everything, and so had to co-operate with other characters and sometimes sit out the odd fight, you might even find RPing became more interesting for you. Think about it.
