Well, this isn't the first topic where PE1 posted and then Mercenary agreed, or at any rate posted to further the general sociopathic tone of the thread, very shortly afterwards. And Djur is right, no-one would have trouble faking a personality like PE1's.

Going to the quarry, Aran looks at the crystals, then takes one of the larger ones. Then he turns around and returns to the meeting room. As he arrives, he finds the party already setting out, led by Arch.

'We are going already? Has Dern given anyone a map?'

'Don't worry, Aran-I have one here.'

And Arch waves a scroll case at Aran.

'I think for the first day we'll head for a point slightly to the south of the Greywraiths' city. Then, when we stop for the night, we'll plan our attack more carefully.'

'Why don't we head straight there?' asks Zir.

'Dern said the Greywraiths would attack the Moon Clan again. If they do, we don't really want to be in the way of the attacking army. Hopefully, we'll find some way of weakening them at their city, and then we'll be able to take on their army on equal footing.'

'What are you hoping to find?'

'If nothing else, the crystals which give them their strength could be destroyed. If that would work...Aran, would it?'

'I cannot tell. I must attempt to communicate with this crystal Dern has given to us, although it will be hard to do, since I cannot commune directly, only through our shared link to the earth.'

'Well, keep on trying...'

Ruined RPs in General

No, they can't.

The reason that god-like characters can't be worked around is that the definition of a godlike character isn't someone who kills every enemy they meet without breaking a sweat-they can have bad things happen to them, they can lose their magic weapon, they can meet harder enemies. A god-like character is someone who decides that their character is massively more powerful than anyone else's character. And that can't be worked around, because either that character is in a situation where everything the party meets is dealt with easily by them, or they meet things which are a challenge for them to kill and the rest of the party has to hide behind a rock while the battle goes on.

To be honest, I think one of the main problems with RPs is that people tend to try to solve the plot complications they create. Someone posts about some evil creature that's blocking the path, and then kills it themselves. What fun is that? The best part of RPs is inventing challenges for others to deal with, and then not trying to ruin it for them when they don't deal with the challenges in the way you expected.

OOC: I agree. The only problem is, we need to know how big the crystals are, and deciding that is Slith's prerogative. If he doesn't post by, say, tomorrow, I'll probably get fed up with waiting and usurp it, provided someone hasn't already done so...and I agree with your sentiment. Slith should be posting more.

1) I remember you. I even remember your member number, mainly because you changed your name almost as often as Alec used to.

2) They're still around, but there are more who aren't in the first 100, so those that are are hidden by volume, and some of those that were, now aren't.

Infuriated Slith really needs to post there at least once a day...

And if you really want to post an RP on the Exile board, it'd better be very good, and very Exile-related. And even if it was, it'd belong on General...

If you want to make the ET board look more alive, post one of those silly 'what job would you do in Exile'-type topics. Sure, they're stupid, but they're at least on-topic...

I suspect it's just your mind associating it with something similar, which would also explain why you can't remember the exact details of your prediction. I've done that once or twice myself too, but like you only had a vague sense that I'd had a dream that was a bit like this...wasn't it?

Even granted that it hasn't been posted in in a whole day, with around 10 people participating?

I agree that RPs as a concept are dying. This has happened at least twice before, when we had three or four running at once and they were getting just like another type of spam. If people weren't so eager to start more and more, but just let it die down to two or (shock horror) one, that one might actually end up being of quite high quality...

Complete agreement here. If you really have nothing more important to post, you might want to consider getting a life. Granted, that's base hypocracy, but then, it's also useful advice. Just advice I could do with taking myself as well.

Aran, meanwhile, has been studying the map.

'Secret passages or not, I wouldn't say there was anywhere safer on the island than here-the rest of it is overrun by the Greywraiths. I would very much like, though, to take one of the crystals you have...wait. Did you say you have mined them? Have you simply dug them up, or have you broken up the crystals?'

'No, we kept them whole. We're not stupid, y'know. We did think that breaking them might have destroyed their power.'

'If not killed them outright. Well, I think we should take all of your crystals with us. Their exact positioning on the island is in a very exact correspondance with the others-that was the whole danger of the Greywraiths capturing your clan. If they do, and the crystals are not here, then they will not gain anything from it. And if they destroy us, they will have gained the crystals, but no power.'

Despite the apparent soundness of Aran's logic, Dern looks uneasy.

'But do you need to take all of the crystals? Surely just one or two would do?'

'For every crystal we leave behind, their power, if they find them, is multiplied tenfold.'

'But the crystals are quite big. You couldn't carry them all.'

'Surely you have some kind of cart around?'

'Well, yes, but that would only slow you down. Why no leave them for us to hide, somewhere near to the clan but far enough away that the Greywraiths can't use them? And we'd have more time to hide them, so we'd do it better too.'

Aran subsides, frowning. Zir chips in:

'That sounds reasonable. Why don't we just take one and get on out of here?'

I agree. If it's in a vaguely usable version, certainly upload it. You may find the programming more interesting with others playing it, and even that more inspiration comes from hearing others' comments. Certainly it looks very good from the screenshots!

OOC: Even if he is a 'bad guy', the worst kind of 'guy' he's likely to be is one that uses the party to take out the enemy and then betrays them. He's not in a position to try and make them die before they accomplish that.

IC:

After a moment's thought, Aran begins to speak again.

'Whether or not a crystal shield could be made to work is not something I know. My art lies not in gaining power over the elements, but in becoming one with the elements-losing oneself that the elements may be made manifest. But these crystals, these crystals of power under the villages...they are almost elementalists in their own right. They have more the...feel...of creatures who have come into so close communion with the elements that they have become stones themselves. How much they know, or care, of the activities of the Greywraith Clan, I cannot tell. If they were of my order, then I can say that they have probably so come into communion with the earth that they care not at all for what happens outside of her. If they are of another order, I cannot tell at all. But this I do know-their power is immense. Only with the co-operation of the stone of power under us, will the power of the others be countered. And if that is possible, I know not.'

'I, too, will fight here. This abomination must be stopped, and I perfer to fight them here, with whatever aid the Moon Clan can give us, than alone, after they have been allowed to butcher more innocents.

'Besides, there is another, more important reason to defend the Moon Clan. The rocks Dern spoke of, they are concentrated under each clan's territory. And they are arranged in a pattern of power. If the Greywraith Clan take this territory, their powers will multiply beyond measure. No, they must be stopped, and stopped here.'

Dern turns to stare intently at Aran.

'How do you know this?'

'I am a servant of the earth. I have learnt, over the centuries, to communicate with the earth, to talk to her, to find her secrets. And what she has told me...is frightening. The stones of power, they contain spirits. But not normal spirits, not like the passive spirit of all that I commune with. These spirits are active spirits, and they ever seek to gain more power. This the Greywraith Clan has given them, in the form of their souls. In exchange, the spirits of the rocks have given them prowess in combat the like of which we saw today. But each clan's spirit alone is feeble compared to the power that they can give if they are all conjoined. The must not gain access to the spirit of the Moon Clan.'

Backed up against the wall, Aran yet again feels sorely his lack of speed. Holding his falchions in front of him, he can easily protect himself due to his greater reach, but striking back is more of a problem. Closing his eyes, allowing his hands to work automatically, he seeks a level of calm that has been roughly shed away by the battle. The movements of his hands, responding to the heat of the staves, become more and more distant, irrelevant. Aran opens his mind, calling to the earth through the magiks woven into his armour. Slowly, he feels a response. Allowing his perception to widen, ever widen, he searches for the rocks the man spoke of, the rocks of power. How is their power stolen? How can that power be returned? Suddenly, it is all clear...and yet all unclear. The power is leeched from the rocks by an exchange. The clansmen must give up part of their souls in exchange for the power they wield. But only certain stones will accept the souls of men...flawed stones...evil stones...

Aran opens his eyes, and fixes the clansman facing him with a glare that chills him even in the midst of his mindless battle lust, a glare carrying with it all the slow and sure malice of the earth itself for those who would profane it. And as sure as that malice, his glowing blade swings down, ending that clansman's profaning once and for all.

Looking at the ease with which the first mercenaries to meet the invaders perish, Aran reaches out a cautioning hand to his friends.

'Don't attack just yet. We'll do far better letting them come to us, and besides, we can watch for weaknesses.'

'It don't much look like these guys have any weaknesses,' replies Rendall.

'Nonsense,' replied Gerhalt. 'The very nature of the world proscribes them from perfection. If they had no weakness, we would not still be alive.'

'So they can only kill one at a time? Big deal!'

'Also, they don't look so strong.' Aran looks carefully at one of the warriors. 'Look at that man...the one sheltering behind the table.'

'Yeah?'

'Three of them are pushing it, but it isn't moving. Their strength, at least, has not been increased by this mutation.'

'And I think I've spotted another thing,' Arch adds. 'The staffs...they look quite hard to wield. I don't quite know why, but it looks like they have to apply almost as much force to stop a swing as they do to start one. Like some smartass mage somewhere said, "Let's make them ignore air pressure!", and didn't think about it.'

Arch has only just finished, however, when the first of the clansmen reaches them. Aran steps forward and heaves up a bench, which he throws at the warrior. The full force of the bench crashes into him, knocking him down and pinning his to the floor. Before he can get up, Thompson is at his side, and his struggles quickly cease. But now four more of the clansmen are hurtling towards them...

As Aran smiled over at Arch, he wondered again why he had committed himself to this venture. Here was a man he'd actually grown to like...the first in who knew how long...and they were going to be pitted against each other in some stupid tournament, all in the name of restoring customs, beliefs so ancient that even Aran was beginning to doubt they could help the modern world. But what choice had he? If he did not, he might as well join the questers, the elementalists who sought death in combat with evils they could not hope to best, rather than admit that their order was dying, that their knowledge would soon be gone from the world forever. No, it was public recognition that would count. But why were the people only satisfied with blood?

The sailor sent to inform Aran of the ship's arrival spent several minutes awakening him from his meditation. Not overly willing to return to his duties, he was perfectly happy to wait while Aran opened his eyes and turned his head slowly to look at him.

'Yes?'

'Sir, we're in port. The captain sent me to tell you.'

'Thank you kindly, my good man.'

'Uh...will there be anything else, sir?'

'No, I have no need of assistance.'

With that, Aran gets up and walks to the other side of his cabin, where his armour stands. Before he gets in, he takes a brief look at it-seemingly just normal plate mail, but so much more. The elemental armour is imbued with all the powers of immovability and strength associated with the earth, and more than that contains two gigantic glowing malachite falchions in concealed scabbards. Once inside his armour, Aran suddenly feels young and sprightly again, although that sensation of sprightliness and speed to him is not readily apparent to others-indeed, he still moves far slower than the average person, but compared to his deliberation out of his armour an increase in speed is apparent, and Aran revels in it.

Making his way on deck, Aran ignores the odd glances thrown his way with the ease of centuries of practice. He knows that his almost seven feet are conducive to others' attention, but ceased caring long ago. Now he goes to the side of the ship, ready to go ashore on the launch.
