Nephil does come from the Bible, where it has been variously translated to mean things ranging between angels and giants. Thus, I suspect it wouldn't be posisble to copyright the name any more than it would be possible to copyright goblins or elves.

Alcove stared across the massive arena at Arcadia. At this physical distance, landing psychic blows was not easy. If Arcadia had somehow managed to become adept at minddueling, things could go very badly for her.

Marshalling her will, she sends psychic bolts through the channel between their minds. Arcadia responds in kind, but to Alcove's satisfaction she appears to be weakening already.

'Alcove? Why do you have to do this?'

'I haven't forgotten how you tried to oust me from power, and I haven't forgiven you either.'

'But I failed...you ended up in a position of power, and I was forced to hide on the island. Isn't that enough for you?'

'Why should it be?'

'I would never have tried to kill you, Alcove. I only wanted a chance to try and undo some of the things Balthazar was doing to our island. Couldn't you have let me?'

'Couldn't you have done that without trying to get rid of me? No, I've had enough of you, Arcadia. You tried to kill me off before, and you've come back again to do the same thing.'

With that, Alcove delivers a blistering psychic attack. Surprisingly, it bounces off Arcadia's previously weak defences, and the riposte is even stronger. Alcove staggers.

'You never did think carefully, did you, Alcove? I'm not here to kill you. I didn't even want to meet you. I came looking for Balthazar. It's him I want to kill.'

'I don't believe you. You've never told the truth in the past unless it was convenient to you. And I know you hold a grudge against me.'

'You don't know anything about me, Alcove. You've always thought in straight lines, looking for the easiest way to get what you want. And now you're not getting it. It's time to end this, and if you know what's good for you you'll leave the tower so that when Balthazar dies, you won't die too.'

'I'll kill Balthazar myself, Arcadia. You aren't needed.'

Suddenly, Alcove feels Arcadia gathering her will for one final mental assault. Pulling in magical energy, she counter-attacks with a devastating psychic blast, but Arcadia's will seems to have dissipated. As her blast strikes home, she feels Arcadia's pshcyic presence recoalesce around her mind. Arcadia's dying scream only just reaches her through the roaring in her own ears. Choking for a breath that seemingly will not come, Alcove loses consciousness.

***

At Delgar's hideaway, the imps that were attacking him suddenly and instantaneously disappear. A second later, his winged and glowing protector does likewise. Soon, Delgar's mind's eye is winging its way back to Balthazar's tower. It is not a little disturbed by what it finds.

***

Elferas is confused. A second ago, Jade had him trapped in a corner, and was weaving a spell that looked likely to finish him off. Now, she has fallen unconcious. As he is looking around for the explanation, Delgar appears.

'Delgar! Did you manage that?'

'Alas, something like that is vastly beyond my ability to achieve. I do, however, know what caused it. Pick up the mage's body, if you will, and follow me.'

'Why?'

'We don't want her out of our sight when she wakes up-even if the charm spell has worn off with the rest, she'll forget everything that's happened, which is possibly an even worse alternative. Come along, do.'

Left with little choice, Eferas follows. Delgar leads the way, passing through doors and then waiting on the other side for Eferas to open them. After a minute or so, they arrive in a large auditorium, with Alcove and Arcadia slumped on the floor at opposite sides of it.

'Delgar! What on earth happened here?'

'They minddueled. Arcadia...died, alas. Before she did, though, she did...something...to Alcove. I can't tell exactly what it is, although it seems like a curse. But we have work to do. Would you remove all Alcove's and Jade's magical items? That would be that sword, their amulets, and Alcove's ring, I think. Now, let me see if I can get a better idea of what has happened to Alcove.'

As Eferas reaches forward to take the Mercury amulet from Jade's neck, Jade begins to stir.

'Ah! I know what that amulet is. Still, we may as well let her recover-I doubt she'll continue to fight. You'll have to persuade her of that, for I shall be busy.'

But Jade appears not to be charmed anymore, and Eferas sits down to explain to her exactly what has happened. Suddenly, Delgar interrupts:

'I know what happened to Alcove. Arcadia has altered her memory, made her forget how to draw in her will to cast magic. All the spells she cast were dissipated as a result, and the effect was passed on to Jade through the amulet-fortunately, the effects only lasted as long as she was wearing the amulet.'

'Will they be permanent?'

'I can't tell that. I imagine she could relearn the process, but whether it will return naturally, and how soon, is anyone's guess. It could only last minutes, although that's rather unlikely. Conversely, it could last the rest of her life.'

'Should we not just kill her now?'

'No. I'll know when her magical abilities begin to return, if they do. For the moment, living will be even worse than dying...she has no power, none at all. Could you live with that? I don't know I could. But she has to. And I'm not sorry.'

Eferas' contented nod echoes Delgar's vicious sentiment. Just at that point, Alcove begins to stir...

OOC: Sorry for the length. In addition, if anyone objects to anything in this post, please PM me and say.

OOC: MSW, if Delgar makes false assumptions, that's his problem, and he'll just find himself holding the imps off for longer than he bargained on. Although if the imps are kept in existence by Alcove, they'll probably disappear when the mindduel finishes...

If you want me to RP the mindduel I will. I don't think anyone really has any idea as to how it's supposed to work, though, so you could easily make something up...

IC:
Delgar was beginning to get worried.

They should be gone by now. I hope they aren't permanent summons...this isn't getting them any further away...

OOC: I have to go now...bah!

As Delgar is scrying the tower, he comes across some summoned creatures heading in his direction.

Alcove's imps...Uh oh...

He quickly goes about sealing the cave door off, then returns to his apparatus.

How can Alcove have found out where I am? The imps certainly don't have the intelligence to find me this certainly, and Alcove shouldn't have been able to have located me this fast, even if she's been doing nothing else until now. Well, there's no time to worry about that now. The imps oughtn't to last long, this far from the tower. If I can just distract them for ten minutes or so, they ought to dissipate of their own accord...

A blinding apparition appears in front of the imps: an flying humanoid, wielding a great sword. It approaches them, and they scatter in all directions. Turning, it chases the slowest, as Delgar revels in the chase. The imps, true to their origional mission, turn towards Delgar's cave once again, but the being is in front of them before they can even turn, and they are forced to turn and flee once again.

I'll have to catch one eventually, and when I do, they'll realise that it can't hurt them, but let's just see how long it works...

Meanwhile, back at the tower, Arcadia and Alcove are engaged in a mindduel, preventing Eferas and Jade from interfering, and Eferas is barely preventing Jade from killing him before the mindduel has a chance to sort itself out, one way or another...

28 looks odd...I don't know exactly why, although I'm sure the woman ought to be larger relative to the horse...and the horse seems unhealthily fat, too...and the horse in 31 looks wrong too, although I'm not sure why I say that...

'Socially acceptable' depends on context and frequency. If you say it occasionally in response to someone who's being irritating anyway, no-one cares. If you use it instead of the full-stop key in every post, you won't be at all popular.

The two clones advance into the room, casting spells blindly (OOC: remember I mentioned the darkness spell?) in the directions of the spells Eferas and Arcadia are throwing. Suddenly, the two demons descend on them from either side of the door. Jade is in a panic.

What's going on? What's that darkness? And what just attacked them?

Suddenly, she sees one of the claws of the demons around the doors.

Aha! Demons!

Ordering the clones to prepare antidemon spells. As the demons are ravaged, she searches Alcove's memory for a way of dispelling the darkness inside the room. At last, she finds a spell she thinks might work. Waving her hands above her head, she shouts the power words, and is gratified to see the darkness disappear. Then, a voice distracts her.

'My dear lady, that was extremely painful.'

'What? Who are...you're Delgar, aren't you?'

'The very same.'

And with no further ado, Delgar starts waving his hands and chanting. A large ball of light begins to form between them.

Responding, Jade turns towards him and casts an energy bolt. He quickly dodges to one side, and continues chanting. Jade casts another spell at him, and another, but he dodges them all. Then, the Alcove part of her mind realises what's going on:

It's another illusion! Ignore him!

Turning back to the room, Jade finds the two clones trying to cast ravage spells on Eferas and Arcadia. Even as she takes control of them once again, the two mages respond with a simultaneous fire bolt and a kill spell, destroying the Alcove clone completely. Stopping, they turn and look at Jade's clone, expecting the charm to have worn off, but she just prepares another spell. Delgar appears behind them.

'It's not actually Jade. It's a kind of illusion, but it has substance. You can kill it quite safely, and ignore its spells-they're still spells, but not nearly as powerful as the real things. Jade is outside in the corridor, but watch out-she's somehow got Alcove's spirit inside her.'

Casting more spells, the duo bring down Jade's clone, just as Jade herself marches into the room. From the look in her eyes, though, it is clear that Alcove, not Jade, is control in Jade's body-the charm spell and the amulet have combined to give Alcove complete control. Throwing down a smoky crystal, Jade begins the rites for a mindduel...

Uh, I can't see any difference at all between Devlish's version and the origional. Granted my monitor is mucked up atm due to some rubbishy game changing my palette only when opened, or similar, but I can't see any difference at all. If there is some, it needs to be more changed...maybe completely obscuring the lower half of the image with mist, which wouldn't make it look any less artistic. The cropped image doesn't look right, I don't know why...I think it's the exact point it's cropped at, images with sides in whole-number proportions generally work better. (ie, square ones or ~2:1. Mind you, this is just my personal theory...)

Suddenly, Delgar looks up.

'They're coming. They've appeared...two rooms away, in that direction. Hush now, maybe I can get an idea of what they've got before they arrive...'

He pauses, his image frozen again in a bizzare pose. Just as oddly, it quickly reanimates.

'I can't tell exactly what enchantments they've used-that would take too long. I took a visual look, though, and Alcove has a Ring of Will, and she's given Jade a dangerous-looking sword and some kind of shielding amulet. This changes things, certainly. Our best chance, I think, is a darkness illusion. I can make the room pitch black, and even give you some vague ability to see in the magical dark-Alcove and Jade will appear as white shapes. Unfortunately, this means we won't easily be able to tell them apart, although we only want to kill Jade. If I know Alcove, though, Jade will be the first one through the door...although I'm not sure how much that'll help us.'

'If I put my demons either side of the door,' volunteered Arcadia, 'They can attack them as soon as they appear.'

But Delgar had already disappeared, and the amount of light in the room was decreasing rapidly, leaving Arcadia and Eferas little time to prepare before nothing was visible. Then, suddenly, they could each see a green glow.

'The green is you, the red is for the demons, and white will be for anything else.'

'Uh, Delgar? I can't see any red...'

'Nor can I...'

'Oh dear...ah! I know!'

'What?'

'They're still invisible. In fact, it's possible...yes, the green glows are actually your illusionary doubles. Well, there's no particular reason to dispense with that backup...darkness takes a lot of energy to maintain, so Alcove will probably be able to dispel it fairly quickly if you two can't deal with her first. And I think she's about to come...she's in the room next door, along with Jade. Good luck!'

As Alcove and Jade disappeared, Arcadia and Eferas sprang after them. However, once they had broken through the door, the duo had gone.

'Delgar? Where are they?'

'I don't know, I can't keep track of everything. Wait a second.' A pause, while the image of Delgar freezes in space, and then it is reanimated. 'They're shielded by some kind of spell. I could break through it, but by the time I did they'd probably be attacking us again. The good side is that an antiscrying spell of that power can't be cast that quickly, and can't be put into an amulet either, so it probably only affects a hidey-hole somewhere in the tower. I'll be able to give us an advance warning-only a few seconds if they come out close to us, but it's better than nothing. Meanwhile, I'll make us all invisible, and try to create some illusionary doubles...and maybe one of you could try summoning something? I could cloak that too, which would give us an extra edge.'

15-18 and 21 don't load for me.

11-14 are all cool, although I feel that maybe you could put something else on the main menu (currently 12, for people who don't know)...I feel a battle scene would be better, since magic, especially out-of-battle magic, is a relatively minor part of the game (unless the beta is a lot different from the actual game...).

I like 20, but in 19 I think the b/w enlargement in the background detracts from the picture rather than adding to it (and is somewhat out of place if no other character has a similar background...)

As Arcadia sees Eferas arrive, she turns towards him and shouts.

'Eferas! That's Alcove, she's Balthazar's lackey. Attack her, the other is charmed and will join us once Alcove is dead.'

The illusion mimicks her movements, pointing slightly to the left of Alcove, but clearly indicating who she is.

'Who's the other?'

'Me? I'm Delgar. I'm on your side.'

And with that, Delgar launches another flurry of magical bolts at Jade...all missing.

However unlikely the explosion is, there's nothing wrong with Mancire assuming that Balthazar can help him. Whether he can or not is another matter...

IC:

Arcadia, knowing the rebels are in the tower, decides that now is the time to battle Alcove...whoever wins, at least the rebels will be able to get straight to Balthazar. As she is preparing magical walls of protection around herself, she hears a voice.

'What's going on here'

A portal appears between Arcadia and Alcove, and Delgar steps out.

'A fight? We can't have that. Most impolite.'

Meanwhile, Arcadia feels herself turning invisible again...but this time, she can still see herself.

What's happening?

Then, Arcadia sees herself step to one side of where she perceives herself to be. Almost fainting, she recovers at the last moment, realising that Delgar has created this illusion to distract Alcove, who is now remonstrating furiously with Delgar.

'Get out of the way! That woman is a rebel and trying to overthrow Balthazar.'

'And you are trying to kill her? Tut-tut, how violent. In any case, it's out of the question. I suspect she may be the mage that dug the tunnel. I need her to remain alive to finish my scrying.'

Alcove tries for a moment to process this, then stops as she realises it is pure nonsense.

'What are you trying to achieve, Delgar?'

'What does it look like I'm trying too achieve? Your death, foolish woman!'

A fireball leaves Delgar's hands, and Alcove dives to one side.

'Jade! Kill him! I'll concentrate on Arcadia!'

Alcove launches a bolt of pure magical energy at Arcaida's illusory double, but it darts out of the way with surprising speed-surprising to all but Delgar, that is, who caused it to move. An ice bolt returns, and now it is Alcove's turn to duck, but not without the ice bolt skimming her magical defences and weakening them.

Damn Delgar! Why did he have to choose now?

Delgar, meanwhile, is matching Jade blow for blow, but strangely not a single one of his missiles come anywhere near hitting, instead blasting walls, floor and ceiling. Jade is much more accurate, but she cannot seem to get a hit in-Delgar is dodging just too quickly.

OOC: Note, please, that Delgar cannot harm anyone. All references to fireballs, etc, were illusory fireballs. In addition, Delgar's illusions are of higher quality than average, and thus although Alcove will detect them, she won't do so straight away. Note lastly that Delgar is not actually there in person, but simply as an illusion, which is why he keeps missing: if one of his fireballs went through Jade without harming her, it would rather give the game away...
