'Socially acceptable' depends on context and frequency. If you say it occasionally in response to someone who's being irritating anyway, no-one cares. If you use it instead of the full-stop key in every post, you won't be at all popular.

Using @$$ as your name isn't really all that funny, but I don't think it's breaking any rules. Bending, yes, but not breaking.

—Alorael, who thinks tasteless is the best description of frequent use of the word ass. Yes, you may all call him a Puritan now if you want.

Ass, damn and hell are the words allowed by the administration. Curses starting in s, f or c are most likely not allowed.

I'm not a puritan at all, but: what's the point of using the word 'ass'? Does it give more content to the discussion?

But sure, if time and ocassion are right, then sure, why not? Freedom of speech is allowed.

What about the "B" words? Can we use those words if used in the right context?

Hell, &@mn, and @$$ are the only curse words that are allowed. Although I bet @$$ is discouraged.

But, what if I want to talk about my dog, I couldn't call her one of the "B" words?

You'd better have a good reason too. I'd say you should have a good reason to discuss your posterior in great detail as well, but that's less offensive to most people.

I have tried, but I still cannot understand why people are allowed to say "hell" but not all those other things. "Hell" is the only word that actually IS cursing. All those others are, well, certainly not nice, but still not cursing.

I think cursing has got to do with religious affairs like, umm, uttering the name of satan or the like and thus bringing bad luck and misfortune upon oneself. IMAGE(can you say @$$ on these boards_files/confused.gif)

Haha! Drakey made a funny! ^^;

I'd think ***** is allowed if you're actually referring to a female dog, though there are better words to use.

Of course, you can refer to a female dog just by calling it "female dog". An example:

"My female dog is called Fool. She's a dachshund. Yada yada... She's this and that..."

After you mention it's a female dog, you call her "she" or just "dog". Everyone will understand that you are refering to the same dog, unless you mentioned another dog (there you can use names... you know, if your dogs are "Fool" [female] and "Stupid"[male]).

If you use the B word, people could think of it in some other way...

Immaturity sucks. Why can't people think of either of the "B" words as its normal definition?

well if you could get people to think of "the B word" as its defined in the dictionary, yould have to get every body to look at all the other words, such as ass, a donky-like creature, or fu** to breed cattle. People should act mature, but that isnt alwise the ideal.

Around here, we always call female dogs bit ches. Actually, the word "bastard" was originally for a male dog.

Why dont you just refer to a female dog as "perra", its the "B" word in spanish. It seems less offensive that way.

Usualy when I´m pissed I curse in some other language rather than my own (spanish) it is too bad that people always seem to learn the insulting words for every language.

Stupid conversation.

And anyway, why would you all suddenly have this urge to talk about female dogs? It´s not like it´s some kind of "must-topic".

And should I understand that it´s fully acceptable to curse in a foreign (that is not english) language?

Why am I even writing this?

Stupid conversation.

Moving on to the history of the f word:

It says "audio: Monty Python"

Python? Where was it first published?

I cannot believe someone has bothered making a document about the "history of the f-word". The voice was nice, though! IMAGE(can you say @$$ on these boards_files/biggrin.gif)

It wasn't supposed to be serious it was just something stupid someone did. Maybe that is why it was on a website called funnyjunk.com.

Personally, I think profanity is one of the most creative and fast-evolving aspects of language.

'Ass' - well, you're using, it got past the censor, so fine. By 'F', do we mean 'fiddlesticks', once a shocking obscenity, I'm sure. As to 'B', you can't mean 'bollocks', a word not recognised by American spellcheckers, but meaning variously a Scottish priest or the testes, depending on whether you're rguing for the Sex Pistols' key album's title to be censored or not in British courts.... (It wasn't, BTW).

EDIT: If 'ass' is OK, what about 'arse', a fine, old Chaucerian word meaning the same thing over here?

It depends mostly of the context using "rolling on the floor laughing my @$$/ass off" will not give you a warning for masked/open swearing but if you use it offensively, maybe except in the limits defined by Omlette, you might get a warning.
