Well, if he's called himself the Overlord, that could be a hint as to what he wants to be...

-E-

EDIT: Oh, and Zephyr, the answer is no. I've sent you a PM about this, but you obviously haven't read it or haven't got my point. Either way: please stop trying to stick in a race of Scygers. You can have your potion if you want, although there's no reason why ef's potion can't help you too, and as for the Mire zombies, I think we'll just kill them.

OOC: People, it's all very well for everyone to invent their own super-evil character that is causing all the undead invasions, but they're going to be very hard to justify. One is going to have to turn out to be in control of all the others. To this end, I would suggest that we follow up VWM's hint about an 'Overlord'. Maybe this 'Overlord' wants something and has taken a bunch of different 'armies' into his pay to achieve this? That would include the dracoliche, the vampires, and the death knights...and if we could keep it to those three groups, rather than inventing half a dozen more, that would be wonderful. The motives of each group for following the 'Overlord' can be discovered as we go along, but if we put this (fairly loose) constriction on the plot, it should stop it from getting too confusing.

Anyway, IC:

The vampire Coras turned away, and with it almost a third of the force attacking the town. However, a large amount of it still remained: the zombies and ghouls, all suddenly heading for Maestro, and what Arianne had called the Flying Ones, the one remaining Zombie Dragon with its attendant swarm of shades and spirits, and the Dracoliche locked in mortal combat wiht Greenswell. Rathlan ran forward and, before Arianne could stop him, retrieved the silver crossbow bolt and reloaded his crossbow. Suddenly Arianne swayed on her feet, making the gesture unnecessary.

I don't trust her, but she did send the other vampire off. While this Family business is beyond me, if it means she'll continue to stop the vampires attacking us, she must be kept alive...at least for now. And that means she needs blood...

Looking around, Rathlan discovers a cow that has somehow survived the undead attack.

'Look, here...drink its blood. I know you really need human blood, but someone's bound to have died in the attack. I'm not sure what you really want, but I suspect that it's important to you to have the majority of the town alive rather than dead at the moment. Now, I'll be going to help with the other undead.'

Cyborve was carted off to the robot repair and maintenance section. However, the ship's robots quickly discovered that he was not the legal property of the ship, and reactivated his brain to see what repairs he wanted done.

'Where am I?'

'You are in the robot repair and maintenace section of the ship. It has been deemed necessary to repair you due to damage maintained while you were suffering from a virus. The ship has detected that you lack anti-virus software and are a liability to the ship. However, you are a private citizen and thus we must ask your permission before...'

'Just do it! I don't want to spend any longer here than I have to!'

'Also, we have detected that you are carrying several offensive weapons. We regret to inform you that they will have to be patched into the ship's security system, and that any attempt to use any of these while on board will automatically be checked with the ship's computer. However, you are a private citizen and...'

'What happens if I refuse?'

'If you refuse, you will be deemed a menace and be held in suspended animation for the duration of the voyage.'

'Fine, I accept. It's not like I'll be wanting to use them much anyway.'

'It may interest you to know that this policy is in effect for all offensive weapons owned by any passangers.'

Meanwhile, in Alorael's cabin...

'Hey! What's that robot doing with my sniper rifle?

As ef explained the situation to Rathlan, Arianne looked over their shoulders in growing horror.

'Stop! Look!'

They both turned round and looked. In the distance, yet another undead horde was approaching. Two undead dragons already flew overhead. Suddenly ef cried out in pain.

'The wards! They've been broken!'

A flash of light temporarily blinded them, and when it had gone, a small army of ruby skeletons could be seen heading towards the town.

Arianne got up purposefully.

'This power can only be commanded by one of the Clan. I can stop it, if you will let me go.'

'Wait!' interrupted ef. 'You're still weakened from the wards, and for all you know, there could be more than one vampire out there.'

'That's true, but I can hardly wait until I recover-the town won't hold up against a single vampire for long, let alone two.'

'I'll come with you,' suggested Rathlan. 'I can take care of any of their minions, and I've found a silver brooch. If I get a minute, I can bend it into a shape that will fire from my crossbow.'

'One more thing' added ef. 'I'll bless your crossbow quickly before you go. You're right, Arianne, this is our only hope. I just pray I'm not sending you to your dooms.'

'We'll be alright' replied Rathlan. 'But you'd better get back to the town: there's a magical disease spreading rapidly, and they'll need you to heal them, if they're to fight off this attack.'

As ef ran back to the town, Rathlan and Arianne turned to skirt round the undead army, heading for the driving force behind it.

OOC: premonition: I don't know if you want your character to be this co-operative. If you don't, feel free to betray me, just try not to kill Rathlan...

A small cleaning robot, patrolling the corridors, bumped into Logalot. It beeped angrily at him, climbed the side of the control desk, and started cleaning the control panel itself. Within seconds, it was spotless. As the cleaning bot left, a maintenance bot appeared, and opened up the panel, revealing large amounts of yoghurt on the inside. It then departed, making way for another cleaning robot which removed the yoghurt, and in turn another maintenance robot which replaced the control panel. Logalot stared in confusion until a voice snapped him to his senses:

'The ship is now fuly under control, and hovering in a 7-hour orbit. This is not in the scheduled course: should the computer plot a return to the scheduled course, or ready to recieve new input?'

OOC: Yes, I've decided to play as the ship's computer and small army of maintenance bots. If I grow bored we may see things like battle drones and holograms appearing. For now, it's just cleaning bots.

Half-way up the observation tower Rathlan was building in the centre of town to warn of the next zombie attack, he spied the healer lady leaving through the gate.

Doubtless she's going to look for herbs, or something.

Then she approached a figure huddled on the ground. Rathlan lifted his spyglass to his eye, and took a careful look.

A vampire! I hope our healer lady knows what she's doing. They aren't to be trusted. Still, she won't be able to come into the town, so there's a limit to how much harm she can cause us. If there's one, though, there may be more. Perhaps I'd better start melting down some silver for crossbow bolts...

Meanwhile, the townsfolk drafted to help with the construction of the tower were trying to attract his attention.

'We want to stop for a bit, we're feeling tired, and sort of ill. Maybe there's something in the air...something left-over from the undead attack?'

'All of you feel ill? This is serious! Probably the undead want to weaken us before sending the next wave. But they'd have to have someone here to start it off...the vampire! Of course!'

With no further ado, Rathlan sets off towards where he saw ef, searching his pockets as he runs for something silver...

OOC note: Gnomes have naturally high resistance to disease. Rathlan'll come down eventually, just slower, and the symptoms will be less serious.

Well, the thing that's confusing me about the scripting language to date is the lack of commands to take data from what is happening in the game and use it to make other things happen in the game. At the moment, all one can do with it is manipulate variables.

And I haven't actually had a chance to see the extra resources, due to the aforementioned yellow-screen bug. I'll continue to play, though.

Actually, if your gaming time is limited, BoE may not be the game for you. It is the best game by far as far as value for money goes, but if you have limited time you might think getting SubTerra. Anyway, download both of them, and have a look, but don't base your choice soley on the single scenario available to download with BoE-most of the player-made ones are better by far. But it's really what you'll enjoy, not what we enjoyed, and that's what's so great about shareware, you have a chance to find out before you pay any money...

Isn't it interesting how misleading statistics can be? For instance, the 'average wage' at a large company was around £25,000 a year. This sounds reasonable until you discover that the vast majority of the workers earned barely more than the minimum wage, while a small cabal of bosses were paid hundereds of thousands, resulting in such a reasonable-sounding statistic.

'Tests show that X makes doing Y 50% easier!' Of course they do, but how many tests did it take before one got that result?

...there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.

I have some bugs:

In the tutorial, clicking the Diplomacy button closes Leylines, and entering the combat freezes the computer (did so twice).

When scouting with a scout the screen suddenly went yellow and the computer jammed. I don't have a clue why, although he may have run into a combat?

There's no music, although this is probably intentional.

The button saying 'continue' after loading is complete isn't really necessary; no-one is particularly likely not to want to continue...

When do we get a version with more enabled?

-E-

EDIT: Oh, and you really need more in the map editor. A user-friendly (and by user-friendly I mean non-programmer-friendly) scripter would be useful, as well as tools that fill in more than one square at once...and maybe a 'randomly generate map' button. And under the quickstart menu, we could do with a couple of options about the map: how mineral-rich/food-rich/mana-rich it is, what percentage of it is water, whether the non-water is small islands or a single continent, etc.

Rathlan sat on a control chair he had erected himself, nailed to the top of the town's pallisade. He held his crossbow on a rail in front of him, and five clips full of acid bolts in a case beside the chair. Held taut in the rail were the ropes that triggered the explosions. Looking around, he saw his fellow adventurers standing ready, or already charging forward. There was a large number of ghouls passing over explosion number two, so he released it, chuckled a bit at the sight of ghoul parts flying up to rain down on the zombies, and then readied his crossbow.

Other explosions came from further down the defensive line, turning more scary undead monsters into harmless undead pieces. The zombies were still advancing, but they didn't appear to have caused much damage. Rathlan watched Kel-Aziz run into a pack of ghouls, waveblades waving in all directions and ghouls crumpling all around.

What is he here for?, wondered Rathlan. I wish I knew more about him-he's too unpredictable for my liking. Still, he certainly knows how to fight.

Scyger stood between two bulwarks that had been built to channel the zombies into a slow-moving line. One by one, they emerged, and one by one his scythe cut them down in a regular chopping motion. Suddenly, a quickghast ripped through the zombies and threw itself at him, snarling. He jumped nimbly to the side, but couldn't raise his scythe before the quickghast launched itself at him again, and he could only concentrate on fending off its blows. Suddenly it slowed, as if it was moving through water, and he quickly raised his scythe and chopped it in half.

'Well done!' called Alex from the walls.

'Thanks for the help!' replied Scyger, as he turned to the renewed flow of zombies.

Suddenly Rathlan saw a new threat raise itself up: a row of ruby skeletons was walking behind the zombies, glaring forward with deadly rays of heat. Although they were far away, it wouldn't be long before they were close enough to set the palisade on fire. Rathlan aimed carefully...one stopped, its head missing and its attacking ability gone. Another stopped, and another, but the skeletons kept on coming.

Coherent groups? That may be because there aren't any, unless you're referring to the distinction between mods, admins and the rest. The Despers used to be a significant clique, but now they aren't, mainly due to the fact that only a few people from Desp post here regularly any more, and all those people who thought Desp was trying to take over the world, starting with Spiderweb, have been persuaded otherwise or left. The only other clique is Polaris, and any information about Polaris is strictly need-to-know.

He's right. Look at the Vanhatai assault on the surface in E3: Apart from your party, who are practically superhumans and certainly not to be counted in any war, no-one could touch any of the monster plagues, which were meanwhile wreaking havoc on Valorim and pretty close to destroying it. If Valorim could fall that easily, what's going to happen to the other continents? I can't really see the sliths, nephils and humans allying together, and even if they did, the Vanhatai could just throw up a barrier...

Of course. And Firedrake, how are you planning to see if characters die or not? No-one is likely to either write a sequence where their character dies or accept one written by someone else.

Meanwhile, Rathlan is helping set up defences.

'Look, if we bury this, then leave this rope attached to this wire, one pull will send the nearby zombies sky-high. Yes, put a few rocks on the rope, we don't want it to be too obvious...'

'Zombies march forward blindly. Build a small slope here, and a shallow pit here. They'll fall down, and the next rank will land on them before they can get up...'

'Put a tripwire here, half a metre in the air. Then another, a half-metre on. They'll fall over the first onto the second and cut themselves in half.'

Other heroes run along the defensive line, pitching in here, offering a suggestion there, and the town quickly turns into a deathtrap for the approaching undead horde.

-E-

EDIT: The 'Of course' was in reply to Tommy.

Basically, the inn is under attack by zombies. This is the only plot. Just create a character and get hacking.

And to whoever called Rathlan a halfling, I demand that you rescind that immediately. He's a gnome, an will remain one, thank you!

IC:

Rathlan looked out into the street. Zombies milled everywhere, and ghouls ran around occasionally trying to get into buildings. There seemed to be no end to the horde. It was time for drastic measures...

(A little later)

'See, Alex, if you cast a haste spell on this, then I make a small explosion around here, this table leg will rotate around this bevel, causing this blade to rotate massively fast. I've attached it securely to the serving trolley, so as long as we stay on we ought to be able to steer it...'

(A little later still)

The zombies have turned on a ghoul and brought it down, and are busy trampling it into the ground when a bizzare contraption, crewed by a frantically chanting mage and an ecstatically happy gnome, careens out of the inn and proceeds to pass back and forth along the street, blades whirling, teetering at impossible-seeming angles, until eventually it crashes into a road-sign and collapses. Fortunately for the crew, none of the undead in the immediate vicinity still posses enough limbs to strike back.

'Quick! Run!'

Is that you, Sparky? A little less of the language, if you please...

IC: Looking out of his window, Rathlan sees a massive crowd of zombies milling in the street. In the middle of the crowd stands an imposing figure, cloaked in black. Going back inside, Rathlan picks up a chair, and throws it at the cloaked man. He wobbles a bit, and sways on his feet. Rathlan goes back for a second chair, but when he reaches the window he finds a zombie trying to climb in. He fetches it a smack with the chair, and knocks it back, then throws the chair at the spellcaster. This one is blown into tiny pieces in midair. Rathlan shuts the window, bolts it, and collects some of his vials of acid. He then goes downstairs.

Provided he also doesn't have any mage ability, any extraordinary magical protection, and any connection with any organisation or any size that provides him with aid in the form of extra manpower, yes, he'll do.

My character is a hark-back to old days, Rathlan the gnome exile. Equipped with a repeater crossbow, some vials of acid, and a form of primitive mine/grenade that isn't very accurate but is very destructive (he once sank a pirate ship with one, but that's because they float and a hole at water level in any ship is fatal...), he's on a mission to create a foolproof nonmagical flying machine. So far, he hasn't succeeded.
