Woe betide the state of gold and glory that is also known as California! The *adjective that would render this topic locked* Conan the Republican has risen and taken over with the, *gasp*, help of the loyal townsfolk! What is this warlord going to do about the financial troubles that this sorry state is dwelling in? Of course, there is only one answer to this. Hasta la vista, money! The people have spoken! Democracy has spoken! Democracy is dead! Long live democracy! Ahh...politics... It's been a while, hasen't it? Posts: 756 | Registered: Monday, August 4 2003 07:00 |

Well, if people democratically vote to remove the democracy, what else can you do? Actually this happened in Liechtenstein (small 50000 people or so country in middle Europe) which is no longer a democracy since a couple of months. And anyway the USA has somewhat of a history with movie people in positions of power, and Reagan didn't turn out too bad imho. I'd say Arnie is as good or bad as the next guy, and with 30+ candidates I'm not surprised that people can't tell the difference and so vote for the best-known one. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! No, I'm a great believer in democracy. People deserve what they vote for. Seems Bush Jnr. and Arnie will be establishing a brain cell trust so they can share it (the cell) between them when they meet up in a week or so. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Again, the failure of representative democracy is shown. Charisma counts for much more than skill at governing, so of course Ahnold won. He has all the name recognition, all the accent recognition, and an impressive assortment of muscles. —Alorael, who expects another recall in a few months. And some more after that. Once a precedent has been set, politicians will take great pleasure in using it. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I honestly don't see why so many people seem to get all afraid of California's governor. The legislative is all democratic. He'll get -nothing- done. Sure, that can be a bad thing, but that means the damage he does will be minimalize. I just pray he's better than the last action "hero" who took a governorship (Ventura, MN.) For all those people who did not know, America is not a Democracy its a Republic, a variation of Democracy. You would think that the people in California would be smart enough to actually vote for a real politician instead of some movie actor. Arnold wont do as bad as most of the other canidates, but seriously, name recognition wont run a state or country to its full potential. The only reason these morons win is because there are enough dumbasses in the world to actually vote for them. I hope Arnold winning the election doesn't spark a chain reaction of celebrities running for political positions. That could really put our country in the crap hole. -------------------- "Wow, fish." I really dont see how much worse Cali can be off with Arnold, his cabinet might surprise us and actually do some good. Though I really think it wont be him behind the policy making, but the people he has hired to help him make decisions. Posts: 5 | Registered: Wednesday, August 27 2003 07:00 |

I agree with Serpentar. Arnold may not be qualified to run the state, but I think he's at least smart enough to realise that he has no idea what he's doing, and listen to someone competent. Or, maybe the entire state will spontaneously combust. -------------------- "... and approximately one sea turtle." Posts: 277 | Registered: Tuesday, August 13 2002 07:00 |

Of course, if he does get some decent politicians in on his cabinet, he's probably forceful enough to push their ideas through. After all, if he can get himself elected on essentially no credentials, he can probably do quite a lot more, too. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. quote:I first read "combust" as combat. In a state-wide brawl, Democrats would probably win because they'd be opposed by all of seventeen Republicans (and their pets) living in California. I'm very surprised Arnold won. *Keep ROFL* Anyway, I think Arnold will do just fine in California. He had an interesting campaign, and he really made an effort to try to become politically expierenced. I especially liked his education policies. People think he is an idiot with an ugly but well recgonized face that will destroy California, but he will have help and hopefully the problems will be resolved. I haven't really followed the whole recall thing, but I believe the main cause of it was because the former governor raised the deficit way to high and made some bad decisions. -------------------- How do signature's work? -Keep Posts: 1415 | Registered: Thursday, March 27 2003 08:00 |

My college roommate is from California and he's decided to vote for Arnold even though he's an ultra-liberal. I told him to vote for Mary Carey and webcams in the governor's mansion, but he's too much of an Arnold fan to see clearly. In all seriousness, however, I hope whoever is elected attempts to legalize ferrets in California. Not only is the ferret ban ignorant, it is downright discriminatory. -------------------- "Let a man find himself, in distinction from others, on top of two wheels with a chain- at least in a poor country like Russia- and his vanity begins to swell out like his tires. Don't they have a ban on Chinese people in California too, or was that repealed just a few years ago...? Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

I think one of two things will happen: 1. The air of L.A. will cause a mutation in Ahnold's brain, giving him super-intelligence, and he will save the state. OR 2.The air of L.A. will smoke Ahnold into a retard like it has half of it's populace. -------------------- -"Well, double dumbass on you!" -William Shatner, Star Trek: The Motion Picture Posts: 51 | Registered: Tuesday, September 23 2003 07:00 |

I doubt Arnold will spend most of his time in LA. He'd better do well otherwise there will be another recall. He can't do that badly can he? I mean, he's the terminator. There's nothing that he can't blast away with the power of pass signy bill thingies. -------------------- How do signature's work? -Keep Posts: 1415 | Registered: Thursday, March 27 2003 08:00 |

Maybe Arnie was super-intelligent living on the family farm in Austria and the LA smog got to his brain when he arrived in Hollywood. Still, seeing as he was a bodybuilder before he was a film star, I doubt it. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

<relevant anecdote> I actually met Arnold in person when I was traveling on business in Sacramento about 8 months prior to the election. He walked into the lobby of a fancy hotel in downtown Sacramento with no escort or anything while I was sitting in the hotel bar/restaurant with my colleagues. It turns out that one of my colleagues knows Arnold personally, so we went over and talked to him for a few minutes. When he left, my colleague turned to me and said, "I bet he's here to do prep work to run for governor." At the time I thought that it was ridiculous, but now.... Strange days. </relevant anecdote> -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |
