quote:Ordinarily that would be true, but this time they made an error, and recently posted on the Orb site that the Orb does indeed count flavor text for Guildpact. :) [ Wednesday, January 04, 2006 13:41: Message edited by: mortification8 ] -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. I think the Orb counts flavor text also, so 17 might only represent 5 cards...but more would be cool! Also, the religious discussion about the implications of the term "Nephilim" is starting to heat up. For those who are interested in debating Biblical references, check out this thread about the origins of the word. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Wizards has been attempting to consolodate creature types, mainly dealing with cards in the older sets. However there are plenty of unique or very limited creatures left such as our beloved Slith and Nephilim, and other odd stuff such as Wumpuses (or Wumpi, but that discussion was had long ago...). The Slith are all relatively good creatures and Slith Firewalker saw quite a bit of tournament play. Slith Firewalker also sort of looks like a Slith from the avernum games (as does Slith Predator). As far as the possibility of other Avernum creature types emerging, the new MTG Universe has recently (as of the Mirrodin set) been opened up to new planes other than Dominaria where things started. Hence the last three blocks have all been on new worlds, and there have been rumors of "aliens" appearing in either this or the next block. We shall see. It's probably all just coincidence but remember that Wizards' R&D is staffed by gamers just as nerdy...er...I mean...cool.. as the Avernum fan-crowd so they are probably influenced to some extent by common interests. EDIT: I just found out that there are to be a cycle of Nephilim in Guildpact. Since they are 4-color creatures, there are likely to be 5 in total. The newly revealed one is: Yore-Tiller Nephilim - (has white in mana cost) Creature - Nephilim (R) Whenever Yore-Tiller Nephilim attacks, return target creature card from your graveyard to play tapped and attacking. 2/2 They all seem kind of mediocre as far as Magic creatures go but the flavor and art are cool at least. It would be pretty neat to see decks running around with both Slith and Nephilim, however... All I can say about the Nephi issue is that I've got a friend who is Mormon and has talked about Nephi before, as part of their faith. I have no idea what the mainstream Mormon community does or does not believe. Back to the original topic, I found a picture of the card. It....sort of.....looks like a Nephilim! EDIT: A headless Nehilim at least. Well at least it's orange. Sort of. ;) [ Saturday, December 31, 2005 09:28: Message edited by: mortification8 ] -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Actually it's the first-ever 4-color creature; one of each color of mana except white. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Right, actually there is a discussion about this currently on one of the Magic boards and apparently the angel Nephi features prominently in the Mormon faith...so Nephil is perhaps a derivation from that. However, I think Jeff has been asked about this before and has said that it's just coincidence, and that he came up with the name/term on his own. EDIT: Here is a link to the Guildpact Spoiler discussion for those who are interested. The Nephilim card is in French, (un)fortunately. ;) [ Friday, December 30, 2005 09:00: Message edited by: mortification8 ] -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. From an early spoiler to the upcoming expansion set of Magic: The Gathering called Guildpact: Glittereye Nephilim Creature - Nephilim R When Glittereye nephilim deals combat damage to a player, draw that many cards. 1, discard a card : Glittereye nephilim get +1/+1 until end of turn. 2/2 Interesting....I wonder what the picture will look like? As far as I know this is the only Nephilim in Magic. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Actually, this is a very interesting project from a scientific standpoint. At the time Reagan first initiated it, most of the ideas were really beyond technology at the time. However technology has a way of catching up in a hurry, and now it has. Most of the core concepts have either been demonstrated or actually used in weapons and space systems. Popular Science (here) keeps pretty good tabs on the status of the various systems. My favorite is the laser that can fire from a jumbo jet, shooting down planes, missiles, birds, mouth-spiders, and so forth. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. OK, I am somewhat relieved and perhaps able to sleep again. The only spiders coming near me in the future will be the GIFTS. However, I had another problem this week. A bat got into my basement somehow (where I sleep) and took up residence perched on my closet, over my bed. Now, this is not your ordinary garden variety bat, which eats the nasty mouth-spiders, but your man-hating, society hating bat, with little beady eyes to boot. (My daughter tells me its a "common brown bat" but I don't for a minute believe the propaganda put forth as fact on Animal Planet. This is clearly a man-eating bat of the worst sort). Anyway, between the spider phobia and the bats, I haven't slept for like a week. At least finally yesterday, after days of calling, I finally found a service to come and get the bat. It turns out that bats are not covered by any of the ordinary animal control agencies because they are a) wildlife and b) apparently extremely dangerous due to the various diseases that they carry (at least this is what all of the "no" people tell you). Lo and behold, the bat dies like 3 hours before they show up, so I end up paying $25 for dead bat rescue (not to be confused with deadbeat rescue). This I could have done myself (after some serious psyching up and my trusty asbestos-lined gloves). The meta-issue of nocturnal snacking is as yet unresolved, and potentially made worse by the absence of my spider-eating bat guardian. But hey, I guess the devil you know.... I realize that this post may not make a lot of sense. Well guess what - you try not sleeping for like a week due to spider/bat-o-phobia and see how coherent you are. They ought to include this as like astronaut training or something. In the future I will show no mercy to any vermin that come within the same zip code as my mouth. For all you would-be mouth spiders out there, consider yourself warned. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

was sipping spiders through a straw? After reading some of the recent threads, I've come to the conclusion that people are nuts. However, a question remains. Do people really eat spiders in their sleep? I'm having a serious hang-up about this, especially since I sleep on the floor most of the time. More discussion and elaboration is needed. Factual evidence/links/spider studies preferred. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Actually the Claymores that I've seen just say "Toward Enemy" on the front side. They are also curved so that you can tell which side is which even in the darkness. Despite this directional wisdom, the back-blast from a Claymore is pretty fierce in its own right, so it usually has to be placed a significant distance away or against the base of a tree or rock to protect the good guys. Claymores were used widely during the Vietnam war and are more or less accepted as standard equipment for most armies nowadays, despite the fact that they are a horrible killing and maiming weapon that was at one point questioned as to compliance with the Geneva conventions (like anyone follows those nowadays anyway). I believe that it has also become standard practice with military-issue boots to include helpful pouring instructions on the heel. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. I totally agree. The Art of War is a classic, mind-expanding read. In a true Taoist manner the subtlest of truths can be gleaned from what appears to be the most general axioms. It takes a great deal of thought and reflection, and hence does not make for a fast read, but IMHO it is well worth the effort. You can buy it used for less than $3 at most bookstores, on Amazon for $5, or download it as an e-book on e-bay for $2. Well worth the money! -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. I've played the original hunt the wumpus actually. I just found it interesting that the card was supposedly based on MULE as opposed to the original. I've also been in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike. On a mainframe, no less. Good to see that there are some others here that have played some of the "oldies". Check out lemon64 for a MULE rom and emulator. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |
