Excellent response by X. I can only add to the well-made basic points which I agree with. In theory there are no problems with replacing hard-copy books with some sort of electronic reader. However, in theory all forms of government work just fine. In reality there still exists a huge gulf between the convenience, portability, contrast, and visual appeal of even a cheap book and any portable computer device. The only advantage to the computers at this point is that you can have other-than-static visual effects such as animation and sound. Also computers allow random access and searching whereas normal books do not, other than the mostly useless index. There is also a social problem with computers, however. Whether it is the Internet or the whole MTV 5-seconds-attention-span deal, the average computer user does not really "read" when accessing data on a computer. People tend to skim, and to rapidly lose interest, when they are reading on a computer (I'm talking as a social or mental issue here - this is aside from the physical issues like eye fatigue). Most people that I know that grew up using computers heavily are not good readers, meaning that they do not read as a hobby or read anything that they are not required to. They do tend to enjoy more interactive things like movies, or assimilating information in more bite-sized pieces on the Internet. I grew up reading as a primary hobby, and using computers for manipulation of data (such as programming or games) rather than for data access in and of itself. I was in college when the Internet boom started, and hence I am right on the generation borderline between my parents (can't spell computer) and my children (don't understand why you'd go to a library when you can just look it up on the computer). I still can't handle any serious reading on the computer – I find myself printing it out to read off-line. I think that this is a combination of factors for me – the eye strain of the monitor (and the small screen real-estate – you can't fit a full page of text on the screen at a readable size), the ingrained pre-DSL days respect of on-line "minutes", and some unnerving urge to always want to do something else on the computer while I am reading. I predict that books will disappear eventually, however, as will hard currency and a lot of other things. However it will be slow and largely limited to the developed nations as it happens. It will also probably be 2 generations out (my grandchildren) before it happens. Or maybe not. The publishing industry is very strong politically and we still don't use the metric system, so stranger things have happened. Oh yes, we still vote with paper ballots. So go figure. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Rent "Better off Dead" with John Cusack. I think it pretty much covers all the clever options for suicide, and in several languages to boot. edit(sp) [ Friday, October 17, 2003 19:13: Message edited by: mortification8 ] -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. n = number of current lesson (I've lost count) n+1. Sometimes pants have Uranium in them and make you sick. n+2. There really are stores where people sell nothing but gloves. n+3. You should always examine every mundane item that you come across, because you never know if it will actually be slightly different(+). -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. <relevant anecdote> I actually met Arnold in person when I was traveling on business in Sacramento about 8 months prior to the election. He walked into the lobby of a fancy hotel in downtown Sacramento with no escort or anything while I was sitting in the hotel bar/restaurant with my colleagues. It turns out that one of my colleagues knows Arnold personally, so we went over and talked to him for a few minutes. When he left, my colleague turned to me and said, "I bet he's here to do prep work to run for governor." At the time I thought that it was ridiculous, but now.... Strange days. </relevant anecdote> -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Od, For Morrowind once you donwload the official patches, the game runs a lot smoother. Obviously a good video card is needed as well. I've also installed a lot of the user mods that improve the graphics, such as the one that makes new heads for the elves, and that really improves the game. As far as travel goes: use Mark and Recall. Set up your Mark at Creeper's house in Caldera. You can now teleport there from anywhere to sell stuff. You can walk quickly to the Caldera Mages' guild and teleport from there to the other Mages' guilds. Then you can use Stilt Striders and Boats to get almost anywhere quickly. Also if you boost Athletics and Acrobatics you can jump/run anywhere very fast. I made a constant effect shirt to restore stamina just for this purpose. Obviously a good map such as the one in the Strategy Guide is useful as well. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

I've read all three and liked all of them, but for different reasons obviously. Count of Monte Christo is an absolute classic. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Well, I was very confused by the title of the post. So I will post current games: Avernum 2 Divine Divinity Heroes of Might and Magic 4 Aplha Centauri Morrowind I've also read a lot of the books mentioned as well. The "constants of nature" book that someone mentioned is probably "The Constants of Nature" by John D. Barrow? I'm casually working my way through Steven Baxter and Gregory Benford right now, a few books a week. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. In New York City, a man is mugged every 3.5 minutes. Fred Smith is that man (anyone remember the SNL skit? I think it was Bill Murray, or maybe Chevy Chase - they kept trying to interview him only to be constantly interrupted by him getting mugged) There are three types of falsehoods: Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics. Once in graduate school I had an argument with a person that was using two data points on world population to extrapolate an exponential growth pattern. The end result is that they refused to talk to me anymore when I pointed out that the argument was silly. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. This might sound strange, but I'd be willing to offer server space/bandwidth for the forums if that would help the speed issue. Does anyone have some stats that could help me determine if what I could offer would be helpful, or if the powers that be are even interested? I've got significant capacity that is currently underutilized. Actually that may be a good statement for me in general.... -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Dang, I had already chosen the killing option...bandwidth by natural selection... I will work on this "patience" thing that you describe instead. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Actually I own Nethergate, just never got a chance to try it out yet. I look forward to the epxerience. I have not played the MMORPG in question. I'm not as big a fan of MMORPG's as I am single-player games. Is anyone else having problems sometimes with the speed of the forum, especially when posting? I am getting pretty frustrated at the lags and occasional timeout when reading or posting. Is this on my end or does the server sometimes get too much traffic? -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |

Not an earth-shattering post. Just wanted to say hello. I can't remember if I've ever posted on this forum before, but I've been lurking for years. I guess memory is the first thing to go.... I really enjoyed the Exile/Avernum games. Currently I am replaying Avernum 2 after a long absence so it seems pretty new. These games are superb - much more enjoyable than about 90% of the so-called "modern" games that you pay big bucks for in the store. Call me stupid, but I actually bought multiple copies of some of the games, as the various bundle specials have been available. I like the little CD cases Jeff uses I also like SubTerra. I couldn't get "over the hump" with Geneforge and hence never really got into it. Might take a look at Geneforge 2 when it comes out for PC. I was also gettting ready to try Nethergate - is it worthwhile? As compared to, say, Avernum 3. Final question - I want to try out BoE after reading about it for so long - what are the best scenarios to start with? Oh yeah, one final comment. In general this is one of the best forums I've been to. Everyone is well-behaved, intelligent, helpful, and in general seems to be part of a coherent group. I am never disappointed reading posts on this forum. Kudos to everyone. -------------------- This space intentionally left blank. Posts: 70 | Registered: Monday, September 1 2003 07:00 |
