Gameplay is currently a luxury.

Graphics SHOULD BE a luxury.

I'd say the first thing we can call an RPG and not an adventure was Rogue. Rogue was the first thing which depended more on equipment, statistics, treasure, and fighting enemies than it did on obscure puzzles. Before it was just... non-RPGs.

Once stuff like FF and Ultima 8 (Pagan) came into existance, the adventures began to die. Example : Uru, the fourth in the Myst series, which was originally both graphically rich, with an alright storyline and rewarding gameplay, an dso were it's two sequels, now relies more on jumping puzzles and other arcade gameplay than anything else. Good RPGs began the decline from the FFs too, and have also fallen into FF-mania.

People call anything that includes hit points, weapons, and at least one statistic an RPG these days.

(Oh, and can someone tell me how FF is an RPG when you have no control over the characters? There is no "Role" in it. It's just a... G. Just a game. And not a good one at that.)

Would spelling it "Alorael " do? Nobody would notice the space, and maybe the computer would pick it up as different. Maybe.

~Dallerdin, who thinks he'll steal Alorael's moniker while Alorael is not posting on his normal account, unless you forum regs know something he doesn't, like the idea of changing usernames. Anyway, he has three bullet-proof vests.

EDIT: minor spelling errors

As far as I know, that message is correct, and no Australians say Australian slang in Australia, but Australians suddenly become far more Australian outside Australia and so use Australian slang. Imagine that all the uses of the words "Australia", "Australian" and "Australians" were abbreviated to "A" and work out the grammar.

And the title of your post, lemmy, becomes more and more applicable further and further into this thread. Where are the moderators when you need them?

You could make the scenario more of a character-interaction scenario than an a combat scenario. For example, think of the politics between the faction leaders in Geneforge, but turn it up a bit, and reduce everything else, and add a few more in. I haven't actually played any BoE scenarios, but from what i hear of it, Election could be comparable.

I can think of hundreds of ideas for this...

For one thing, I'll be able to put that horrible, evil commander in Avernum 3 into a scenario, peaceful, surrounded by 8 peaceful goblins And around the edges of the goblins will be 2 peaceful Ur-Basilisks. Then I'll fire a missile weapon at him. REVENGE!

Martha's a civilised ogre, not a "friendly" one. Friendly ogres brings to mind eight-legged creatures that talk in high voices and tell people that they are cute. This idea, applied to ogres, scares me. As I said. There's nothing wrong with civilised ogres, as long as they don't become too GIFTS-like.

But ogres aren't friendly. At least, not much. Occasionally they are. And G.I.F.T.O.s would scare me. A lot. And they'd try to hug you and accidentally crush you.

Looking for someone to give a smoothie to, Alex stumbled onto a group of strange, green-bearded people. He held out a smoothie to the one who appeared to be the leader.

"Here. Try this smoothie."

He held out a slightly green one. Immediately, the elderly and extremely strange looking person grabbed it and sniffed. He suddenly shouted a strange word beginning with an S. THat was all Alex could make out of it. oNe of his followers stepped forward with a vacant expression and gave the leader a leaf, which he added to the smoothie and then began to try to chew it. He became vigorous, then took on the same vacant expression as his fellows.

"More... more skriba- more smooth. Skribbane. Yes. Hehehe! Skribbane! SMooth! Make... more!"

Alex stepped back, looking a little frightened.

Greaves are pieces of armor worn on the lower legs, if I recall correctly. And if you can have greaves, why can't you have pauldrons? *sulks*

An elderly and irate citizen with a long beard, dyed bright green, and a strange looking symbol on his forehead stepped forward. Following him were three people, likewise green-bearded but without the symbol, stepped up behind him. They appeared to be chewing, and had massive packs on their shoulders, and delirious expressions on their faces. He spoke with an excessently formal and somewhat stupid voice:

"Ah-hhem! We represent the religious sect known as the Cult of the Skribbane. We wish to travel in this spider creature. We bear... gifts."

"Do you have any experience?"

"We must go in!"

"But..."

"We MUST! Do not stop us, unskribbaned one!"

He appeared to be boiling over. He might be dangerous. ADoS thought it best to agree, before he turned dangerous.

"Oh, alright... just sign your name here."

Erika? No. It sounds more like something somebody like Rentar-Ihrno or some other Empire-hating manic would. Well, that almost fits the description of Erika, but, judging her spoken evidence in Avernum 3, she wants the Avernites to be able to return to the surface.

Bah. You don't talk about the graphics. Graphics are and always will be a luxury. And Fallout is and always will be better. But the Avernum games are just a bit more fleshed-out, a bit more realistic, a bit more fun to play. And a bit easier to manage without 6 differnt chars in a party. And without those annoying conveyor belts.

Knowing Jeff's unprecedented ability to think of good plot devices, it's going to be just some terribly underwhelming creature. Like a rather large version of a drakon. Ooh, eek.

One question:

If the prize is a copy of BoA, how do you intend for someone to complete the competition without a copy of BoA? I mean, nobody can program and test properly unless they already have it. Unless you mac users know something I don't.

There's another reason that any such scenario will fail.

If it sticks to the story, it will be poorer than the original because most of LoTR would not be portrayed to its best in a different form (a BOA scenario)

If it changes the story, it will be poorer because it does not follow the correct story for LoTR and so people will condemn it.

Either way you would be better off using your imagination rather than stealing Tolkien's.

I can't allow a topic like this to fade into nonexistance without saying something to the affect of "ADom iz k3wl!!!!!1!!1111" in less n00bish terms.

Even if it isn't a MMORPG.
