Any of the Avernum's are good, the best in my opinion being Avernum 2. Don't, however, start at 3. It is the worse one. Oh, and try Nethergate. It's easily the best of Jeff's games. The two nearest flying demons (the ones on the west edge of the altar platform) fly across the chasm fine. The third however, doesn't. Instead, it flies southwest into the wall, and BoA freezes. Last time I played, I managed to Repel Spirit and Cloud of Blades all of the demons in one or two turns - before they flew. However, I was replaying just this morning, and let them come at me. Thus I saw the error. I checked the scripts, and it seems fine - I have no idea what's causing this. Anyway, I managed to reload and kill them sharpish, and I'm now back at the guardpost resting up, but I wanted to alert you to this (assuming nobody else has). After that you can go to either College (for 2 or 3 years) or Sixth Form (usually 2 years). After that, it's University. Only Primary and Secondary schools are compulsary.
