I sent a letter to Jeff Vogel recently (and as always, got a prompt response):

Dear Jeff Vogel,

"I saw the screenshots for A4, and I hope you're not sticking with them! The characters especially look so bland and heartless! You should hire a graphics designer to redo the images, while there's still plenty of time before you release it. You probably don't look on the Irony Central boards often, but you REALLY should see this one to see what some people are saying about it:
http://www.ironycentral.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002781#000014

Maybe Geneforege sold for a while, but Avernum depends on its strict turn-based system to sell. Please, Please, Please, at least look at this link, and realize that other people are posting similar opinions in other topics.

Your product-buying consumer item-purchaser slave thing, Christopher Fossedal"

Response:
"I'd be careful to not judge too much from a few early screenshots. Avernum 4 is completely turn-based, and adheres closely to the Avernum system. I don't think people will be disappointed.

Well, at least we have Jeff's words that Avernum 4 "adheres closely to the Avernum system". And supposedly he'd know (if Drakey/RW deigned it necessary to tell him).

The shortness of reply probably speaks volumes though. I don't think he's too impressed with those who got all in a lather over the screenshots. And rightly so...

Thus endeth this post.

If you look closely at the screenshots, you will notice that they all are standing in line. Sounds familiar? Also, I don't think he will use the shaper and guardian graphics in Avernum 4, It is just because they are preliminary graphics and are probably used for testing. After all, you always see on the backs of game boxes how the graphics they show are different from the actual game graphics- that is because they use the preliminary graphics. Maybe Spiderweb should have waited a bit before releasing the screenshots.
I am curious about this, though:
-Do the characters have walk animations?
-Will you be able to zoom out so the proportions are like the old Avernums?

Ça c'est la réalité.
Mais si le ronchon ronge, le ronfleur ronchonne,
Le roi roule, le rongeur règne
Et l'orange ronfle,
Ça c'est une autre histoire.

I just hope to Deus that the walking system doesn't have the same annoying quirks that Geneforge had, like how the map doesn't automatically move for you, and that all the other buttons below aren't to confusing to figure out.

By the way, the title of the post is the title of the e-mail I sent him.

Where have you been? Seriously, read the whole thread (you even linked to it) before doing something like this.

Also, while the Shaper and Guardian graphics may still be there, there will certainly be others to choose from.

Press the tab key a lot. It tells you who everyone is and what the buttons do, in case you can't figure them out. Default melee, default missile, cast mage spell, cast priest spell, get, attack, four quickspells, four quickslot items.

Will the movement be on a grid like Avernum, or will you be able to go anyhwere Geneforge-style?

Grid. It wouldn't be Avernum without the grid - you'd have to walk with the mouse!

Grid with the mouse.

EDIT: Direct all other Avernum 4 comments to the other thread.
