quote:Agreed about eyestrain, but I don't think turning pages is much of a strain. I've also found that I read faster than I can listen and I can't concentrate on listening and something else (or reading and something else), meaning any speed would come at the cost of appreciation. —Alorael, who also can't walk and chew gum (or sip skribbane) at the same time. Really. It's a slightly aged but standard insult, and it's true for him! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I said that it's another matter entirely. Don't you believe me? —Alorael, who actually shouldn't be believed. He meant that the first post actually asks a question that can be answered in one word. Discussion can come from it, but it's not specifically requested. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Try emailing spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com to see how you can help. Given Spiderweb's history, it's likely that you'll be turned down, but it can't hurt to offer. —Alorael, who appreciates someone doing something to help out even if it doesn't work out. Maybe enough support can bring back Misc! [/futile hope] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

OOC: It was a good idea and it was spoiled by a lot of angry people and bad RPers. Let's give it another go, especially since Logo has already declared that he's not the captain. RP is the abbreviation of roleplay. This is a roleplaying thread. Think of it as a rambling story with far too many authors. OOC and IC are "out of character" and "in character," respectively. The former means that the following text is addressed to other members of the boards, like this, and the latter means it's part of the story, like the following paragraphs. IC: Alorael wheeled a large cart filled with boxes and suitcases into the ship, greeted the crewmembers standing around, and began unloading his baggage in one of the rooms. "Hey!" Logalot protested. "That was my room!" Alorael opened a case and lifted out a sniper rifle. "Um, I guess you can have it," Logo added, backing out of his former room even before the orange bottles of skribbane began to make a large pile on the floor. —Alorael, who can't bear to give up his signature on Spiderweb, even in RP's. Prepare for more even more than usually pointless OOC ever-changing signatures. It's sci-fi, but it has technology advanced enough to make it indistinguishable from magic, and then there are a few real fantasy bits thrown in for good measure. —Alorael, who likes the series. He does not really like dead-end discussions, but that's another matter entirely. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Soul crystals aren't from Pokémon, actually. They're straight from the Avernum games. The idea is good, but there is one problem. Jeff doesn't want to program a way to target monsters with anything but looking and spells. It seems to me that it wouldn't be too hard to adapt the code, but Jeff won't. —Alorael, who also isn't sure if there will be any good way to have scripts call a monster using a variable instead of a straight number. But with that a workaround could probably be devised. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

BoE can cover just about everything from great plots to interesting (and painful) combat to puzzles that make you long for the painful combat again. With the number of scenarios there are almost certainly many that will appeal to you. And, because of the length of most scenarios, you have a better chance of reaching the end. If BoE is not your thing, try the Nethergate demo. It's Spiderweb's shortest RPG (or rather, two short and connected RPG's telling the same story from two points of view), but I think it maintains the best atmosphere. —Alorael, who will also recommend Avernum 2 or Exile 2. They have the same plot but different engines, and they have the best plot out of the Exile/Avernum games. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Spiderweb does have speed problems at high-traffic times, especially when you post. The two solutions are two ignore it or to start killing everyone who visits Spiderweb when you do. Take your pick. —Alorael, whose decision is quite easy. Passiveness is bad. Sniping is fun. That's all there is to it. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

A meme is some concept that gets spread around. Fads are memes. Watching television is a meme. Using despisms on Spiderweb is a meme. Even hating spam is a meme, more or less. Memes are everywhere. —Alorael, who finds meme evolution theories fascinating. Yesterday's despism is no longer acceptable at all. Darwinian selection will eliminate you from the social pool. Knowing cats, I'm sure a nephil would find some way to show his disapproval upon finding inadequate facilities in a hotel. The manager would know in no uncertain terms what the nephil thought. And then he'd have to clean it up. —Alorael, who has lived through cats doing this far too many times. Very opinionated, cats. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

MMORPG's are massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Online RPG if you're willing to drop the cool marketing name. Despers are members of Desperance. Some are more despish than others, though. It has boards, it has articles, it has Spiderweb members of yesteryear. It has conversations that warp your mind forever. Drop by! Polaris has gone through several incarnations. It's currently embroiled in a deep, dark conspiracy that nobody can tell you about. TCOA is The Club of All. It started out as an alternate Misc/General board for Spiderwebbers who didn't feel welcome. Now it's just another set of friendly chatting boards. —Alorael, who really has no idea what Griffer Splah is. Others will have to explain that one. If the money has already been withdrawn, it should only take a day or two at most to receive codes by email. Mail takes longer and depends on your location. —Alorael, who is just guessing. He is not very experienced with Spiderweb and Paypal. It usually seems to take a few days after payment is received regardless of payment method, though. Welcome to Spiderweb, Mortification! Leave your sanity at the door. Shh! Don't leak information about Polaris, Omlette! Spiderweb has its good members and its bad members. It's not perfect, but it could be a whole lot worse. Just imagine a whole board of Shottses and Shaper Masters and you'll know what you're missing. For all who don't remember those two, just think of endless flaming and spamming. Speaking of spam, please don't post multiple times in a row. Use the edit button on top a post to add more (or retract some statements). I like Nethergate. It's nowhere near the size of the Avernum games, but it's two different games in one, and I think the ambience is better maintained. It also has nice ties to real history. Give the demo a try and see what you think. —Alorael, who thinks the signature is from a large number of official forms and documents that have many spaces intentionally left blank and some more spaces wasted in order to inform you that this is the case. I'm a gay spammer? Spammers are told to stop spamming and eventually given the Canned title. If they persist in spamming, they are banned. It doesn't happen very often, though. Double posting is not spamming unless the posts are different. Usually it's just from accidental double clicking of the post button. We live with it. —Alorael, who doesn't consider spammers non-members. They're often irritating members, but they're still members. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Or 4-6 sliths, or 4-6 nephils. No, the vahnatai have a distinct disadvantage when the party is involved. If PC's aren't there, I think the vahnatai could win if they could divide and conquer. If they fail at that, human numbers would prevail. Too little is known about the true slith civilization to guess what they can and cannot do, and the humans already pounded the nephilim into the dust. —Alorael, who suspects the winner would actually be the number of people who will repeat the same points over and over in this topic. That's what I've experienced in all the Avernum games. There is no advantage to gaining a skill earlier as opposed to later, since all the numbers are completely recalculated whenever any variable changes. —Alorael, who likes that. Having to waste beginning skill points on strength for magic users in the Exile games was a bit irksome, especially since it reduced starting spell points because of lower casting skills.
