Books are more portable than computers. You can sit at a table, in a chair, on a couch, or even suspend yourself upside-down from the ceiling with a book. A laptop would make all those difficult, and I defy anyone to find a comfortable way to curl up with a laptop. Most thieves would rather steal a computer than a book, and most books aren't so expensive that replacing them would be a serious problem. Unless you need to carry around several different books at once, hard copy is the way to go. Books can be dropped, stepped on, thrown, covered with spilled soda, and generally mauled. They'll usually come through legible. Computers tend to fall apart, and they do it far more completely. —Alorael, who would like to see a well-designed book-shaped, non-glare (non-backlit?) electronic reader. Make it tough and give it a decent-sized hard disk and it would have most of the advantages of both books and computers. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Usually wondering if I'm dreaming or not, or realizing that I am dreaming, makes me wake up. Sometimes, usually in nightmares, it doesn't, and it doesn't help to realize that you're asleep when George Washington is still trying to cut off your arms with nail clippers. —Alorael, who doesn't have any better explanation for that dream. He's not even sure how that works, conceptually. But that's never bothered dreams. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Alec's still unbanned and around, as are several other oldbies. Some have created new accounts, though, and of course the names keep changing. —Alorael, who could say that 186 members joined sooner. But that's rather obvious (and not really correct, since many are now gone and some are duplicates), so he won't mention that fact. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

This doesn't immediately call to mind any other particular world I've seen, but it also doesn't really have any new and unique ideas. This background could be home to a good RP or a terrible RP, but nothing in the setup makes it an especially different RP from all the others I've seen here. —Alorael, who would rather see an RP background designed with specific details on an area or two than generalizations about a world. The information given here might help someone understand RP's or stories set in this world, but it's not descriptive enough for two new RP's set in it to be necessarily similar. I rarely remember dreams when I wake up, although sometimes I am suddenly reminded of them later in the day. The dreams I do remember tend to be depressingly normal. I dream that I wake up and go about my day. Then I wake up and have to go about my day. —Alorael, who has never had recurring dreams. He has had serial dreams, where dreams several nights in a row are about the same thing. Those are usually so surreal that it's hard to say that they are sequential, or even more than just related. Sure. Or you could download Leylines. Or, as I said elsewhere, try other Spiderweb demos. —Alorael, who has been playing a bit with A3 (and dying with a singleton). He has also fallen back on the old staple of Angband. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

[Edit: Beginning removed due to better comprehension. Slow, but better than never.] On the boredom, you could always try downloading the demos of the Exile (or Avernum) games. You can pick up the background and have fun at the same time.[/advertising] —Alorael, who always likes RP's. Unfortunately, they tend to move too fast for him to follow. He probably won't even try to join this proposed one. [ Thursday, October 16, 2003 12:42: Message edited by: Alorael ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

quote:My problem with the Avernum AI is that it always seems to attack the front ranks. As long as you maneuver your party carefully, ranged attacks are not a threat, melee is certainly not much of a threat, and spells only chip away at your fighters' ridiculous health. Archers that actually aimed usefully and let the melee monsters deal with melee fighters would make fights actually challenging. —Alorael, who could see all kinds of new strategies needing to be developed if, for instance, gazers and mung demons targetted the spellcasters instead of the nearest fighter with a single point of priest skill. quote:When the sanctity of human life is damaged too extensively to be enjoyed, it is simple cruelty to force someone to continue to live. An ambiguous "greater good" should never take precedence over real suffering. To me, that cheapens human life and denies individual choice. quote:They're certainly unforeseen and unpredicted by me. I'm afraid I would like you to describe the result, since I don't see it. [Edit: The gender neutrality of "they" can only be stretched so far before one must give in to proper grammar.] —Alorael, who certainly doesn't think that euthanasia should ever be forced upon anyone. But if someone chooses death over discomfort, why should anyone else have the right to overrule the decision? One is not qualified to judge the difficulty of living with a painful, debilitating, terminal condition until one has lived with such a condition oneself. Sorry, but I disagree. Forcing someone to endure suffering for the greater good is both sadistic and demeaning. It's far better to let someone choose to end their life with dignity than to force them to become a vegetable before they can die. —Alorael, who heard a bit more to the overdone suicide story. The man also set himself on fire, but the fire of course went out when he fell in the water. That was a Darwin Award, and its accuracy seems highly suspect. Looks impressive, and not just because of the volume of code. I foresee many evil scenarios with monsters leading the party into traps, monsters suddenly becoming much tougher, and monsters doing all kinds of really nasty things. —Alorael, who just doesn't want to see the Dark Wyrms that sneak behind the party, waiting for the doomguards to provide a distraction, then breathe on the weakest characters first. I don't think life drain works by percent. It's based on a number like the other skills, but because you can never see it in your status screen you can never see what the formula for it is. —Alorael, who remembers the draining on the Thirsting Blade from A3 v1.0 being extraordinarily high. It may actually be percentage, although it didn't seem to work out that neatly. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

This topic is a Spiderweb perennial. The answer is still no. Jeff does not have the resources to make Avernum Online, the engine does not lend itself to online play, and the stars have not reached the correct alignment. —Alorael, who supposes an AO like NWN could work fiscally, but it still won't be programmed. Even if everything else worked out, it's a risky new venture that Jeff would want to avoid as long as he can make money cranking out standard RPG's. As of 1:52 PST, Europe still leads by two people. Humans aren't monsters. I would exclude sliths and vahnatai as well, along with nephils, troglodytes, and all the other assorted humanoids. Even Rakshasi are iffy, although they are far more monstrous than the others. —Alorael, who also likes Rakshasi. But doomguards are very good monsters as well. Suits of armor with claws that multiply and maul are just the thing when you want to demonstrate your amazing prowess in battle. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

That is even more overpowered. Anything that gives 2 AP is just sick. The damage is also sick, but strange. Why do all these weapons do damage ranging from one to a high number? Why not give it lower and upper bounds that are in the middle? —Alorael, who is almost certain the first bolt ability is impossible. The second is unlikely to work. I do not like to have words put into my mouth. Or onto my keyboard, as the case may be. That's close to being almost something that might be confused with impersonation, which is against the CoC! There are many reasons to doubt Khoth's sanity, but he's not crazy in the kind of way that makes you give out credit card numbers. He's crazy in the way that makes you sharpen your credit card and gruesomely kill small children with it, then blame it on your neighbors. —Alorael, whose credit card number is OH LOOK! Anything that reduces AP is a very bad item in my books. Anything that raises AP is an extremely good item, and if you're throwing that many of them around you're going to make parties too powerful for any scenarios that aren't specifically designed along Doom Moon II lines. —Alorael, who suspects the wrist shields are impossible. You can't wear a shield with a two-handed weapon. You could make it a bracelet instead, as it's on your wrist, but then you could wear it with a standard shield.
