I've played all the Spiderweb games in order of release, so E1 was my first. The first game I ever played on a computer was either Think Quick or Loom, both of which are old and obscure. Loom is still for sale and still fun, but it has been years since I've seen or thought about TQ. —Alorael, who did spend hours playing with computerized word processing and other new and helpful things when he first discovered the joys of PC's. But those aren't games, per se. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If everyone knows him, why does he need a special page? I think we should instead have a page dedicated to all the invisible newbies. It would be rather lacking in content, of course, but the list of names would be impressive! —Alorael, who will make that page himself! He'll get to work on it as soon as he has gotten through all the paths through RiB. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I hear that high-quality souls are going for a good price right now. —Alorael, who doesn't have many suggestions for someone with weekdays tied up with school and weekends forbidden by parents. You could try evening babysitting or after-school tutoring. It would take a while, but you could make the money eventually. "That's odd," Shern mused out loud. "They decided to rob us after they killed us?" "They didn't kill us," Arch reminded him." "I know, but there hasn't been nearly enough time for the remnants of the attacking force to return, report, and send more raiders. This looting was already planned." "They could be after our weapons," Zir reminded him. "Not all of us are unarmed like you, and sp,e of us who do carry weapons carry weapons of exceptional quality, great magical power, and high value." "But that's just it! They're the weapons you carry. Did they expect you to die unarmed here? I think they're smarter than that. Whoever robbed us either was either looking for something else or was not working with the Greywraiths." Everyone was silent for a moment, pondering the implications of that. "Whatever we decide to do," Shern said finally, "we'd best be ready to deal with yet another player in this drama." —Alorael, who has increased the weirdness, or at least the complexity. OOC: Having some people still fighting while others have said that the battle is over is confusing. Could we try to stay more or less in the same place chronologically? Shern raised an eyebrow. "Pardon me, but didn't we just assemble the best of the fighters, though maybe not the brightest. And we came very close to losing, badly. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but that was just one force. Now, with just a handful of us left, you want us to attack an entire clan?" He leaned back and shook his head in disbelief. Aran glared at him. "We cannot stand by and do nothing!" "Oh, I don't disagree. But another grand melee will just add a few more bodies to the funeral pyres, including ours. You're all welcome to go die, but count me out." "If that is your decision, I will not stop you." Dern said quietly. "Wait a minute," Shern protested, raising one hand. "I didn't say I was leaving. I just think we need a better plan. For instance... suppose we grab a few of these power stones ourselves. " —Alorael, who doesn't really want to see more than one character per person. The RP is crowded enough with just one character apiece and the necessary supporting characters like Dern. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Please, don't post in RP style when not RPing. —Alorael, who doesn't think the history of the company is so interesting. Jeff incorporated, made games, sold games. The boards have a more complicated history that can be posted and argued about on demand. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I still think that online forums are a fascinating subject for studying psychology and sociology. If you're not writing on that, Spiderweb Software itself is an interesting company that fills a very small market niche. And ask Jeff about parenting and you'll get quite a response. —Alorael, who doesn't think a general paper about everything Spiderweb could work well. Spiderweb is too varied. Pick one aspect and write about it. The games work, although you might come across as an overenthusiastic reviewer. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The Greywraith jabbed his staff forward suddenly, too fast for Zir to dodge, but then an odd look crossed the inhuman face and the clansman collapsed, blood leaking from five large wounds through his neck. Shern waved his bloody hand at Zir and leapt back at the other attackers. Barely catching a glimpse of the charging enemy, Shern turned and futilely raised one hand to block. Arch interposed his own blade, deflecting the atack enough so that it struck Shern's arm rather than his face. The staff made a high-pitched ringing noise, almost as though it had hit a solid stone, and Shern cried out as his arm charred. Still, he managed to bring his other hand around and nearly decapitate his opponent with sharpened nails. Others fared similarly. Although the clansmen died, each one inflicted a few wounds, and soon the sheer press of numbers had the group pressed into a corner. Most of the other fighters were already dead, and the Greywraiths were still pouring into the room. —Alorael, who isn't willing to give up his signature yet, even for RP's. Shern opened his eyes and quietly took in the suddenly crowded deck. After a moment, he uncrossed his legs and stood in one fluid motion, his well-worn leather armor creaking quietly. He walked over to the rail, peering out at the approaching shore as the wind ruffled his short, gray-touched brown hair. "We've arrived?" he asked a sailor. The man nodded, and Shern turned his eyes back to the water. He knew his teachers didn't approve of his coming here, but then, they didn't approve of very much that he did. He refused to let it bother him. He looked around at the heavily armed and armored warriors around him, inwardly sighing. It was only a matter of time before one of them decided that an unarmed man in light armor was an easy target. Such fights were always messy, especially when Shern had to alter himself to make the fight fair. He looked down again, noticed that the nails of his hand had extended into three inch claws, and frowned. A moment of concentration and they were back to their former, neatly manicured state as the man berated himself for losing control. —Alorael, who apologizes for not working on the gender balance. Maybe he'll have Shern absentmindedly enact an instant sex change later. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Jeff has not done any puzzle games, either. He has made RPG's only, as far as we know. In an interview he commented on that, saying that while making a strategy game might be interesting he doesn't care to take the risk when he knows he can write another RPG and make money off of it. —Alorael, who wouldn't rule out space. Geneforge was a half-step in the sci-fi direction. On the other hand, medieval seems to be what Jeff knows best and what his customers have been buying. And there's still that ambiguous mention of A4 floating around... Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Coherently expressing thoughts would be another major source of problems. Especially in America, where people take the right to say absolutely anything very seriously. —Alorael, who believes that part of the American aversion to learning more languages and learning them well comes from a sense of superiority. Americans are just too good to learn to speak German when the Germans can learn English. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The thread isn't two years old, just almost half a year. The topic of discussion, however, is a perennial Spiderweb favorite for, yes, at least two years. —Alorael, who can remember the glorious days when RiB was an unfamiliar term and everyone expected it to appear within the next decade. Back then, of course, everyone had rocks instead of computers and you had to dodge the mastodons. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

MSW, Panther is the newest version of Mac OS X. It's analogous to a new version of Windows. —Alorael, who's still stuck in the era of OS 9. Drakey insists that RiB will be finished for BoA, however. Does that mean we can expect to have Misc. back in a few months? Or a few years? Or as an archaeological find when archaeointernetologists sift through the ruins of the ancient net? —Alorael, who would give MM a stern chiding and some disgusted head-shaking if he thought it would do any good. Instead, he'll fail to take any decisive action whatsoever. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

English is my first language, and I have to say I wouldn't want to have to learn it as a second language. Forget rational spelling or coherent rules of grammar. Regardless of whether or not snazzy graphics are good, Spiderweb doesn't have the budget to work with them. And if they were made, Jeff would lose a number of customers who don't have computers new enough to handle all the advances in graphics and sound. And in the end, I don't think he would make any profit over expenses; he simply can't compete with huge companies that have graphics teams and million dollar budgets. —Alorael, who finds Spiderweb graphics refreshing. Especially since playing involves more playing and less sitting around while areas load. Even GF/GF2 are quick about it. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

That was Alec, who does things like that. Stick around and you'll figure out why. You may even learn to emulate his style, although of course none can match his mastery of it. These welcome topics always turn into Spiderweb in a nutshell. It would be scary if we weren't already acclimatized to it. —Alorael, who would like to introduce himself as the resident sniper, skribbane drinker, and sole user of the ever-changing signature. If you decide to dislike any or all of these quirks, you'll be in good company, "good" being used very loosely. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I played E1 around 1994 or 1995. I decided to register, but at that point I could only do it by mail. I sent my registration form and got it back with a letter saying that I interpreted as saying that Spiderweb had gone out of business (actually, I believe it only said that Spiderweb had moved and left no forwarding address). Anyway, I somehow managed to survive a few years until I discovered E2 and E3 online. More importantly, I found the new address and the website for online orders. I registered E3, played through it madly, and the rest is silence punctuated by the sound of typing and clicking and the occasional fireball noise or death cry. —Alorael, who isn't sure of the date of his rediscovery, except that it was between the release of E3 and the first hints of A1. Probably. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I don't know what California has to do with anything, but no, not everyone uses AOL. AOL Instant Messenger, however, is a free and very popular chat program.
