You Are A: Chaotic Good Human Ranger Alignment: Chaotic Good characters are independent types with a strong belief in the value of goodness. They have little use for governments and other forces of order, and will generally do their own things, without heed to such groups. Race: Humans are the 'average' race. They have the shortest life spans, and because of this, they tend to avoid the racial prejudices that other races are known for. They are also very curious and tend to live 'for the moment'. That's pretty much up to anyone to decide, as long as it ties in with what is already known about Ohvol. (i.e. gives him a reason for destroying most of the Eastern Gallery). -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Khoth's Disciples Trade has been established with the Knights of Old Avernum. After exploring most of the Eastern Gallery, Acrio Sulfi has ordered the rebuilding of Fort Dranlon. Vahnatai A small NPC faction in far eastern caves. They have traveled up from the lower caves to track Ohvol. They are lead by Iktin-bok. Fort Duvno Another NPC faction. Currently barricading themselves inside the town. Ohvol A creature from the deepest caves. Ohvol has lead to the destruction of almost all of the towns in the Eastern Gallery. He is believed to have gone south towards the Mertis and the Tower of Magi. [ Sunday, April 09, 2006 09:33: Message edited by: Lt. Sullust ] -------------------- Lt. Fort Dolthar ------------ It had taken a few days, but Sulfi finally managed to reach the gates of Fort Dolthar with the assistance of the Vahnatai. In fact, their knowledge of the caves made the journey go much faster than it otherwise would have. He was pleased to learn that information had already been obtained to facilitate the trade between the Disciples and the Knights of Old Avernum. That was one less thing on his mind. One thing still haunted him though, Fort Duvno. On a brief excursion from their main trip, he decided to investigate the town. When he arrived he found the gates locked and boarded up with several signs threatening anyone who enters. The lakeside of the town had been surrounded with a wooden wall. Rather than disturb the townspeople, Acrio thought it would be best to leave. It wasn't long until Denrich burst into the room, glad to see his old student return, Master Krynt followed shortly after. "Sulfi, where have you been?! I spent hours scrying for you and found nothing." Denrich practically screamed. "I apologize for worrying you Denrich. I have been exploring a great part of the Eastern Gallery. From what I have seen all of it lies in ruins." Denrich stared in disbelief. "All of it?" "Fort Duvno still stands, but it is not open to any of us. There is a great feeling of fear around that town. I feel it would be best if we were to avoid it in the future. The rest of the towns have been destroyed. Now if you don't mind, I am tired from my journey." "Of course, Sulfi." Denrich walked out of the room. Master Krynt sat down in a chair near Acrio. --- "What is it Master Krynt?" "Young Sulfi, it is unfortunate that I have only known you for so brief a period; however, the time has come that I must leave." "Why?" "I am old...too old." "I don't understand." "This is a place of deep sorrow and regret for me. Too many have suffered because of my carelessness. I cannot allow it to happen again." "Do not let your age show through Master Krynt, you are more skilled than any magi here. If it is truly your desire to leave this place then I shall grant it. As long as you are willing I will permit you and your finest students to set out for the ruins of Fort Dranlon. I would like you to begin constructing a fort there." Master Krynt smiled. "Thank you young Sulfi. I knew you would understand." [ Friday, April 07, 2006 07:37: Message edited by: Lt. Sullust ] -------------------- Lt. Wonder what's inside Fort Duvno? I think I've gone far enough with the Eastern Gallery. If someone else wants to handle Fort Duvno that'll be fine. I can just have Sulfi walk around and find all the gates locked... [ Monday, April 03, 2006 16:03: Message edited by: Lt. Sullust ] -------------------- Lt. OOC: Goldenking it seems that you have not been reading the OOC thread. Do so now. IC: North of Fort Avernum Acrio was very disappointed at the prospect of having to leave the Vahnatai camp. It had been so long since anyone in Avernum had seen them. He had so many questions, most of which they politely refused to answer. Finally as he approached the exit to the small cave system Iktin-Bok strolled up to him with four vahnatai warriors. "Where do you intend to travel now young Sulfi?" Iktin-Bok asked. "I would love to travel south and investigate Ohvol further; however, I must return to my people." "An honorable choice. I will have four of my soldiers escort you back to your home. All that I ask in return is that you keep our presence a secret. There are those among you who hate my kind, just as there are those among us who hate your kind. Such blindness..." The vahnatai seemed infuriated by the words he had spoken. Sulfi knew it was true. There were few days before the war when one didn't hear someone mention the vahnatai in some derogatory way. "I dare not say more on the matter. Where would you like to depart from, Fort Dranlon?" "No, I would prefer if you could drop me off at the outpost in the lake. From there I'll be able to make my way to Almaria and spread word of the destruction of the Eastern Gallery. It will be a long time before I am at last able to step foot back inside Fort Dolthar." "Very well young one. As you wish, so shall it be. Now it is time for us to part ways. Goodbye." "Goodbye." Sulfi slowly stepped out into the main caves of the Eastern Gallery. From this vantage point it was truly an aweinspiring site. Then something to the south caught his eye. Fort Duvno! Acrio was puzzled why Iktin-Bok hadn't mentioned that this fortress was still standing. He indicated to his companions that he instead wished to go south and a grave look came upon their faces. "We no go there." One of them muttered with a few hand signals that left Sulfi even more confused. However, he was adamant that he travel to the town. The warriors, bound by the word of their master, had no choice but to follow. ------------------------------- Fort Dolthar Having spent most of the day scrying, Denrich was thoroughly exhausted. It is a tricky art at best. There are primarily three factors when it comes to scrying. Distance, Knowledge, and Power. In general the easiest objects to find are close powerful objects that you have intimate knowledge of. However, one usually knows where these things are at that point and the skill proves quite useless. When it came to scrying for Sulfi, Denrich knew what he was looking for, but didn't know where to look. Furthermore, at such a great distance detecting the power of Sulfi would be difficult if not impossible. He would have better luck reaching around in the basement of the fort trying to find rats. {This is not entirely true, as a recent surge in the rat population has caused serious issues for the fort. Especially in preserving a healthy supply of food.} Denrich sat yawning in his quarters when Master Krynt entered. "What is it now?" Denrich was clearly irritated by the presence of the older wizard. "Despite my orders, a few mages from our outpost in the Eastern Gallery decided to travel to Fort Dranlon to investigate the matter further. What they found is discouraging. All seven of the apprentices who accompanied Sulfi are dead. His body, however, was not among them." "If Sulfi has been attacked, then we may have no choice but to send some sort of squadron into the area. We cannot let this go unpunished." "Your youth still shines through in your wisdom young Denrich. Doing so would accomplish nothing and only put more lives at risk. We must--" "We must what Krynt, sit here and die! We only have food to last us for two more days. I do not intend--" The loud voice of the younger wizard seemed to die off in the magical tone that now rolled out of Master Krynt's mouth. "Be silent and hold your tongue fool! Do you think I don't know what is going on. Did you think I was blind to the fact that our men will soon starve. I have not eaten in the past three days so that others might have more." Slowly the wizard calmed down. The hunger had taken a great toll on him, especially at his old age. "I need you Denrich. You must go to Blosk and tell them what we have learned of the destruction of Fort Dranlon and Cotra. Hopefully this information will be enough to finalize our treaty." Master Krynt sat down as Denrich slowly walked out of the room. His time was near, and he knew it. [ Monday, April 03, 2006 15:55: Message edited by: Lt. Sullust ] -------------------- Lt. As for the new towns in the Eastern Gallery. I suspect that a large part of them were eliminated by Silvar and Cotra taking stakes in the caves. At the time Ohvol arrived he pretty much only had four towns to deal with. Furthermore, Serith never actually mentioned the destruction if I recall correctly. He only stated that the Vahnatai were hunting his group. Perhaps this could be a result of Ohvol actually being in disguise as General Valion. Either way, there are numerous settlements in North Eastern Avernum which have not been described, as well as North Central Avernum. -------------------- Lt. Fort Dolthar "It's been two three days and we've still had no word from Sulfi. It is time that we send a search party out. We cannot afford to wait any longer!" Denrich was cleary dismayed at the loss of his pupil. "I have already recieved word on the situation Denrich." "What?! When were you planning of finally informing me?" "Nothing direct, but I have my suspicions. A message was sent to us from our outpost in the Eastern Gallery. The city of Cotra lies in ruin once more. Several bodies wearing the insignia of Fort Dranlon were found. I can only suspect that Fort Dranlon lies in the same shape. Certainly this pends further investigation; however, I will risk noone else to those caves. You are quite skilled at scrying Denrich. Perhaps it is time you investigated Sulfi's location." "If that is what is necessary, I shall risk it." ----------------------------- North of Fort Avernum When Acrio finally awoke he had one of the worst headaches of his life. This was only enhanced by the brightly glowing crystals around the chamber. As he adjusted to his surroundings he realized he was laying in a small bed. The fabric was strange to him and seemed extremely thin, almost to the point of tearing under his weight. Then the door to the chamber opened. The being that entered was alien to him, but not completely unknown. Vahnatai!. The vahnatai spoke to him in a language he did not understand. When the being saw this it stopped and pondered for a few seconds. The next time it spoke was in English. "My apologies. I am Valla. Our kinds have not had greetings in such long years. It best if you speak with Iktin-Bok. He is ... more skilled in your tongues." Sulfi stood up and was lead by Valla through a small section of cave into another building. As he walked through the cave he noticed the strange, unnatural and yet completely natural shapes of the buildings. This new building was decorated more ornately. Clearly the leader of this group of vahnatai dwelled inside. Sitting behind a marble table, Iktin-Bok smiled as Sulfi entered the room. "I am pleased that you have recovered. It took keepers of the greatest skill to heal your wounds." Sulfi was shocked. Iktin-Bok spoke just as well, if not better than he did. "How do you have such skill with our language?" "Do not think that just because we have not contacted you that we have forgotten. There are those of us who still study and favor ties to your kind; however, it is a time of strife in our lands. Various factions still cling to old hatreds. It is best that we not dwell over it, that is not the purpose I am here to serve." "Why are you here?" "There was an accident of the most terrible kind. Something has escaped from the deeper caves. Something even our kind fear. We have traced it to the Eastern Gallery. The destruction we have seen throughout this region confirms our suspicions. As you know Fort Dranlon has been devastated. Cotra, Silvar, and Fort Avernum have suffered the same fates. We believe the creature has headed south." "Cotra! Silvar! Fort Avernum! The entirety of the Eastern Gallery simply laid to waste! I refuse to accept this. There is no creature that powerful save Grah-Hoth. He was banished from these lands long ago." "It is not through power, but through trickery that the creature destroyed these towns. The being took human form and instigated a war between the two cities. I suspect had these days not been filled with such rebellion and suffering it wouldn't have worked. With paranoia as their leader the townspeople quickly surrendered to their darkest fears." "Fort Avernum was the first to be destroyed, by an 'accident' involving the portal. Cotra managed to overcome the defense of Silvar and left the town in ruin. Finally, in a desperate bid to retain order, the troops of Fort Dranlon set out to quell the rebels who held control in Cotra. It was at this point that Ohvol, as we have come to call him, revealed himself. Catching them unprepared, Ohvol easily slaughtered the remaining humans. He then constructed obelisks in each of the towns. Bandits foolishly activated the pylons in Silvar and Cotra. Since then they have only picked away at the rubble surrounding the towns. As your survival shows, he is not the strongest of all magi." "What of the caves to the south and to the north?" "For the greater good we have set up barriers to the North, barring the passages to North Eastern Avernum. We did send scouts to the south. They have not returned in over two weeks and we suspect they may already be dead." [ Sunday, April 02, 2006 10:58: Message edited by: Lt. Sullust ] -------------------- Lt. A large part of it is strategy too. Some players will have difficulty fighting a battle with a level 20-party, while others will be able to make it through with a level 1-party. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Fort Dolthar: As Sulfi prepared to rest, he realized that his incantations would have little effect. The magic emitted from the decaying barriers was overpowering them. Creating stronger magical wards would be useless as he didn't intend on staying there much longer. With this in mind he set two students on the watch as he took a brief rest. For security reasons, he stayed far away from the obelisk and ordered the younger magi to do the same. However, curiousity has a strange effect on some minds. It was at this moment that the fates conspired against Derek. It seemed to him as though a voice was whispering in his mind to place his hand on the obelisk. For the first hour he was able to ignore it; however, as time ticked on the voice began to overwhelm him. Suddenly he shifted his hand into the indent on the pylon. Instantly the caves erupted in a brilliant white light. A sphere a magical energy exploded from the column as it fell into a pile of rubble. The blast instantly killed Derek. As the sphere expanded, all the other apprentices that Sulfi brought along with him met the same fate. He himself felt a sharp pain in his head as the wave of energy struck him, yet managed to survive the encounter. Finally as the wave connected with the barriers, they themselves exploded in an awesome display and all the magic dissipated. Suffering from the tremendous strain, Sulfi passed out. ------------------------ Fort Dolthar: Denrich knocked loudly on the door of Master Krynt. It was well known that the old fool was hard of hearing. "Enter," the ancient wizard said softly. "Krynt, when do you expect Acrio to return? The King is ready to accept the trade negotiations as long as we can hold up our end of the bargain." "I suspect that young Sulfi will not be back for sometime yet. The waterways between here and the Eastern Gallery can be treacherous at times." "If he is not back within the next few days we will have to begin rationing our supplies. Even then, we don't know how long it will take the Knights of Old Avernum to provide us with food." "If the time comes that I need to make that decision then I will. Let me worry about such things Denrich. In fact, I have an idea. I would like you to head down to the docks and see if any of my messengers have arrived." "Messengers?" "You'll see." Denrich trudged down toward the docks. Why would Sulfi have left that old fool in charge. His mind has been lost for over a decade now. He grew even more angry when he found himself standing alone at the docks. Then a large fish jumped out of the water next to him and splashed down. The fact that he was now soaking wet did not make him feel any better. As he prepared to cast an icebolt spell at the poor creature he noticed a small voice enter his mind. <Please, I meant no harm. I have a message for Master Krynt.> Denrich stared at the creature in disbelief. The old wizard had done it again, toyed with nature in the most unnatural way."What is the message?" <What is the password?> "Water Buffalo." Denrich was never sure how Master Krynt had come up with such a ridiculous password; however, he had known the man used it for just about everything for several years now. <I bring word from the outpost in the waters of the Eastern Gallery. The outpost has been established and supplies should last them for the next two weeks. Bye.> The fish swam away into the dark waters. Denrich knew this information already; yet, he was somehow pleased and disturbed about the new system that Master Krynt had set up during his absence. The old wizard then seemingly came out of nowhere, "You should've seen how many of them exploded before I managed to get the spell correct." ------------------------ North of Fort Avernum: "My lord, our scouts have reported an event in the Fort Dranlon region." Iktin-Bok was pleased by this news. The signaling stations that the keepers had spent weeks preparing throughout the Eastern Gallery were actually appearing to be of some use. "Very well, send a group to investigate and report back. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Blosk: Denrich was never much of an optimist. He hadn't expected to recieve any word from the king for several days. When the courier returned so soon, he imagined that their offer had been refused. The letter lifted his mood a little, but one problem remained, they still didn't have much of a stake in the Eastern Gallery to offer. He quickly scribbled down a note for the courier to return to the king and went on his way. Lord Lartaynior, I find your message very encouraging. I will personally take your response to Acrio Sulfi. Expect to hear back from us within the coming days. Sincerely, Denrich ----------------------------------------------- Fort Dranlon It took surprisingly little time for Acrio to reach Fort Dranlon. However, what he found was very discouraging. All signs pointed to the abandonment of the fort sometime after the initial rebellion. From there bandits took apart the crumbling walls of the place piece by piece to build their own outposts. All that remained were a few magical barriers which now served no purpose and a single obelisk at the center. As Sulfi walked closer to the obelisk he felt a strange power eminating from it. He noticed that the surface was covered in several runes; unfortunately, none of them were familiar to him. Near the middle was an indent in the shape of a human hand. "Spread out and examine the rest of the ruins. Come to me immediately if you find anything interesting. Also, stay away from the barriers. At this point they are extremely weak and it is very likely that they could collapse. Such a release of energy would pose a serious threat to an unprepared apprentice." Acrio ordered several of the younger mages who accompanied him. As the apprentices set off, Acrio walked around the perimeter and laid down small incantations so that he would be alerted if they were crossed during their stay. -------------------- Lt. It would probably best to create another topic devoted to the summaries. Each participator has one post and just edits in updates as they come along. This would reduce the need to search through pages of a topic to find the summary. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

A day had passed since the deaths of the two young apprentices. Master Krynt had taken the blow personally, and confined himself to his quarters on the upper level of the fortress. Acrio had finished his dealings with the Guild and they were taken by ship to the western outpost. It was unclear whether they had accepted the offer and Acrio refused to speak of the arrangements with anyone. The silence in his chamber was broken as Denrich walked through the door. "We have a problem Sulfi." The old wizard spoke softly. "We have many problems my friend. What good would it do to add to the list." "This is a matter of more pressing concern. We are running out of food. Even with the enchantments over the garden, we are still not managing to grow enough. If we begin rationing now, we may manage to stockpile enough resources for another month; however, at the current rate we have about two weeks of food left." "The last thing we can afford to do is begin rationing food. It could start a panic. Rather, I think it is time that we made dealings with those around us." "Who?" "The Guild agents were kind enough to inform me of two factions who control a substantial portion of these caves. The Knights of Old Avernum dwell mostly in the Great Cave, and you can imagine where the Abyss Knights live. For our purposes I think it would be best to avoid the Abyss Knights until we learn what happened to the magi that we lost in that region. Therefore you will go as an envoy to the Great Cave and see if you can negotiate some sort of trade." "What do we have to offer them?" "A foothold in the Eastern Gallery." "But we have none, save a small outpost in the lake." "Not yet, but I have already planned a trip to Fort Dranlon. I'll be leaving within the hour, as will you. Master Krynt will be in charge while we are gone. He will not allow his guilt to cloud his judgement." Both men then went to their separater quarters to begin preparing. -------------------- Lt. Despite ongoing negotiations with the Guild, progress was not hindered at Fort Dolthar. Within a day the closest three outposts were already being established. With this came the first official experiment. Master Krynt was a man filled with the wisdom of many years, but still a very strange fellow. It was his mages who first made the breakthrough on the permanent light spell. Now they had found a use for it. Before he set his students to work he gave them a few words of instruction. "For many years now we have spent our lives in these caves; however, as of yet none have discovered how deep these lakes and riverbeds are. Two previous attempts have been made, none of which were successful." "The first experiment involved the use of the spell icebolt. The caster would fire straight down into the water and measure the length of the resulting column of ice. Unfortunately, more often than not such an effort resulted in disturbing the local wild-life. Furthermore, such contact caused a premature dissolution of the spell, thus limiting measurements." "The second experiment was attempted by the insane wizard Dextra. She decided that in order to truly the depth, one would need to remove the water. Thus she invented an ingenious spell which transforms water into air. On testing the spell on a glass of water, she completely dehydrated herself and died." "Do not worry about such problems in this test. Simply enchant then stones you have been given with the permanent light spell and throw them into the water. Then as you were taught, estimate the distance, by examining how strongly you can sense the spell." "Begin!" Various splashes surrounded the island as the glowing beads of light traveled under the dark surface of the water. With it came a long silence as the students began scrying for their enchanted stones. Suddenly Master Krynt heard screams down the shore. He looked up to see that two of the mages had fallen over. "STOP SCRYING!" -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

OOC: Just for continuity, I say we keep the Vahnatai presence that Serith mentioned in the eastern portions of the Eastern Gallery. Whether or not they are evil remains yet to be seen, but they did play a role in the destruction of Serith's group for one reason or another. --- by Aran: For future reference, OOC-only posts would fit better in this thread. (I guess editing this into the end of every OOC post would prove most effective...) [ Monday, March 27, 2006 02:48: Message edited by: The Threadless Thread ] -------------------- Lt.
