OOC: That's already been posted. Also if we post all OOC's in the other thread, how will we know which goes with which post?

The Experience bonus for choosing a goblin would have to be quite large though. You'd have a level 30 character before finishing the first quarter of the game...

On that note, we may need a map of Upper Avernum as well...

OOC: Time for a bit of expansion.

IC:
After the deaths of two mages, it became clear that adjusting the defensive spells laid down by the Empire was implausible. In response to this, Acrio ordered four outposts to be set up around their island Fortress. As he speaks with Denrich he points to several locations on a map that has been laid out on the table. "I want two to three mages positioned at each of these locations. They will work in shifts, each group being replaced every two weeks."

"I agree with your plan Sulfi, however may I make one more suggestion."

"What is it Denrich?"

"I believe it would serve us well to have an outpost in the Eastern Gallery as well. I propose this small island. It was was home to a slith fortress in the earlier days; however, if I recall correctly it has been uninhabited since then."

"Very well, we shall send a few mages there as well. However, this will not leave many left at the main fortress."

"Leave me to handle that Sulfi. I believe our contacts from the Guild are waiting to speak with you downstairs."

Sure enough as Acrio stepped down to the docks he came upon four men who certainly looked out of place in this mage-filled environment. "It is good to see that the Guild has survived through this time of turmoil."

"Spare us the pleasantries, we have traveled quite a distance to be here. Instead, we would prefer just to get down to business."

"Very well. Recently we sent a group of scouts into the waters that bordered the Abyss. We have since discerned that they were attacked and an item which is very valuable to us has been stolen."

"And you want us to retrieve it for you?"

"If possible."

"For what payment?"

"We don't have much gold. However, we can pay you in potions and scrolls if you desire."

OOC: To be more specific, Khoth's Disciples now have an outposts at the following locations: The shore to the south of their current location, the shore to the west of their current location, the shore bordering the exit to the waterfall warren, the island in the cave section to the north {where the Slith Fort was in A1}, and of course the island mentioned by Denrich in the Eastern Gallery.

OOC: To be specific, the only territory held by Khoth's Disciples is Fort Dolthar and the island it lies on.

OOC: I'd like to ask that we do slow down a bit and try to limit it to about one post a day.

For the sake of simplicity are we just going to assume that the Vahnatai the Serith placed in the Eastern part of the Eastern Gallery have eliminated his group?

IC:
Attempting to contact the Guild magically was completely out of the question. Therefore Acrio had decided to send a group of seven mages, and his trusted advisor Denrich to Almaria. He wasn't sure how well they'd be recieved, but certainly the Guild would have a representative in such a major city.

Of a greater concern was the disappearance of the presence they had detected before. Despite further scrying (attempted with great care), only Denrich's first vision had proved useful. Acrio found this news to be very disturbing; however, there was nothing they could do until they had recieved word from the Guild.

With that in mind, work on improving the fortress continued. The gardens were finished, and work to reinforce the defensive grid began. This too proved much more difficult than expected. The previous enchantments had been put in place by an extremely powerful archmagi of the Empire. It was not uncommon for such barriers to react in a very hostile way when tampered with magically.

However, on the positive side note, the mages had made major progress on translating one of Khoth's Scrolls. As it turned out, the scroll documented a spell which Khoth had invented years before. In essence it was a permanent version of the Light spell. This was thought to be a great boon at first. Then the mages realized they had not yet discovered how to turn off the lights.

With the security of Mar Atha (what the disciples decided to rename Fort Dolthar) at risk, Acrio had no choice but to further investigate the death of the mages in the Abyss. However, as the leader of this small group, it would be unwise of him to take upon such a dangerous mission himself. Instead he turned to his long-time friend Denrich.

"You cannot ask me to do this Sulfi!" The older wizard shouted.

"Think of the consequences if we don't retrieve that rod. From the moment it was found everyone of us has been placed in grave danger." Acrio could see that this was not helping to convince his friend. "Besides, you are more than skilled to handle any threats you might encounter."

"I have seen things Sulfi. I meant to tell you sooner; however, you have been too busy with other details. In my scrying I managed to catch sight of a great legion of undead in the far northwestern tunnels. It was then that I felt a presence."

"A presence?"

"Something ancient and powerful. It took all of my strength to prevent it from shattering my mind. I dare not attempt to head into it's dominion."

"I understand your concern now. It would be foolish to send one of our own men. See if you can contact the Guild. This matter requires further investigation, but I am unwilling to sacrifice more mages."

One by one the boats that Acrio had sent out on scout missions weeks ago slowly returned. By the end of the hour all but one of the boats had returned. Concerned Acrio immediately went to the scrying chamber that was recently constructed on the second center of the fortress. An aged man stood over a small crystal in the center of the room.

"I'm glad I finally have a chance to --", before the wizard could finish Acrio had interrupted him.

"I'm sorry Denrich, but it will have to wait until later. I must know what happened to the scouts we sent into the Abyss."

"Very well, Sulfi." Acrio watched as the swirling gases in the crystal to responded to Denrich's incantation. Slowly an image of the final boat formed inside the crystal. "Oh dear."

The boat lay empty on the shores of the Western Abyss. Several dead bodies lay scattered around the area. More importantly, the scouts had been stripped of all possessions. They have stolen a rod of passage! Our defenses will mean nothing to them. Acrio was dismayed at this new information. Recalibrating the defensive network was a daunting task, and could not be attempted until they had managed to finish the magical enchantments on the gardens. If we don't finish the gardens, we will starve to death. If we don't fix the defenses, we will surely be killed as soon as this threat locates us.

Go to Fort Dranlon. Head southwest until you catch sight of a small building in a swamp. From there head inside and down the stairs. This will lead you into the chitrach tunnels. Head north from this section and you'll be in the appropriate area. Just explore around and you'll find a section cut off by a barrier. The test is past the barrier.

OOC: Claiming my territory then editing in the first post...

Name: Khoth's Disciples (KD)
Leader: Acrio Sulfi
Location: Fort Dolthar
Description:
The disciples were once a small cadre of mages responsible for researching new spells in the Tower of Magi. They fought hardest to protest the destruction of the ancient tomes; however, were overridden by other factions in the tower. It was only through sheer luck that they managed to slip out a few manuscripts of Khoth. Despite initially large numbers, several were lost on the voyage to the island fortress. Only 40-60 members currently exist. Though occasionally a few more arrive at the docks.
It should be noted that the primary goal of the faction is to collect magical knowledge that was thought to have been otherwise lost.
---
"How is translation coming along?" Acrio questioned one of the more knowledgeable mages.

"It has been a long time since anyone has been exposed to dragon-script. I have no doubt that we'll be able to decipher it; however, I cannot give you a reasonable time frame."

"Very well, keep me up to date." The lack of progress irritated him, but there was nothing he could do. Curse those fools for having thrown such a treasure away. He quickened his pace as he walked downstairs toward the docks. While care had been taken to reinforce the old enchantments that secured this part of the fortress, progress was still to be made to prevent enemies from sneaking up on other parts of the island. The rebels could attack any day now, and yet we can only muster simple barriers.

Is there a standard way that you set up walls?

I've set up a little outdoor section, but it seems that the walls are too high in places and too low in others. I'm probably going to have to mess around with all the heights, but I'm just wondering how other designers go about making their scenarios look nice.

That's odd, on my pass through all the paths had pylons blocking them. Later paths didn't, but even then it wasn't very helpful. As a side note, has anyone noticed that if you leave some pylons alone and head back occasionally that they change to different types.

shades in Avernum 4

This applies to this specific topic so I thought I'd post it here instead of creating a new one.

It seems to me that theres a bug in the game, that affects the battle with the Formello Shade. If you stand at the top right corner of the top right lake around the Shade's Area, then it is possible to attack the shade without it knowing how to reach you on foot via an area of effect spell such as fireblast. The shade still uses the ice blast occasionally, though it doesn't always hit.

I have found that hasting yourself, then casting slow at least once per combat turn will keep an enemy mage casting haste on himself as opposed to attacking you.

Maybe it's just my perspective. When I place the surface crop base(the alternating brown streaks) in 2d mode then switch to 3d mode the streaks seem to rotate 90 degrees, thus switching to the other streak pattern.
