http://www.geocities.com/arancaytar/desktop.jpg Being on geocities, the address has to be copied and entered into the address bar, like always. I made that thing myself with Terragen, btw. It alternates with another Terragen picture and several wallpapers for Myst, Riven and Exile Velocity Nova. Our grammar is said to be the hardest in Europe apart from Finland, and I suppose I agree. :P Heh, if Jeff ever wanted to have the Exile and Avernum series translated to German, I guess I could do it, but I'm not sure if it'd pay off for him - most German-speakers who download the game did so, after all, from an English site, so most who come here speak English anyway. :) Edit: Apart from that Japanese fellow who came here a year ago and used an auto-translator for posting. Babelfish and Google translators are a crime against language. On that note... "It is and it is end what but it is." Well, I always like to keep unique items. Sort of like a souvenir. In BoE, I kept one of the old School Textbooks (or whatever they were called) from VoDT, the axe Asp from Bandits, a firewalk scroll from RotS, and stuff like that. I certainly wouldn't want to sell those. ;) -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. The second link requires a colon after the 'http' to be taken out. I think. Magic, Demons and Goblins... I sense a victim of fundamentalism... Didn't Omlette say he has trouble with his parents about these games for the same reason? Oh, and by the way, would Priest spells count as magic? On second thought, they probably would. Heathen sects and all that. ----- HEY! We could make another competition from this. Sort of like 'Don't Fix the Shark', only with restrictions regarding content! Like vegetarian meals for certain religious groups. A scenario without intelligent non-humans. Or without swords or any weapons. Without any religious cults. One that caters to the rules of Born-again Christions. Or Mormons. Or conservative Jews. Or Atheists. Or... the possibilities are endless. :) [ Monday, July 26, 2004 04:35: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Would you call the egg-and-chicken dilemma a vicious circle? It all started *somewhere*... the most significant developments aren't heralded by a plug on the main forum - though it's certainly an important point in the history of the satellite forum. The greatest developments happen by word of mouth. Someone asks for a certain place, and someone else suggests they go to such-and-such a board. A third person joins, maybe a fourth... next thing you know someone links to it from a site or in a signature... You really can get rolling with that. Trust me. I'm not saying you shouldn't try. I'm just saying not to expect much for the first few months, and that you've chosen the moment to advertise on Spiderweb a little... early? In the odd case you *do* get a lot of traffic in the first few months, it's a warning sign that it may not last. Anything going on at Chance nowadays? Edit: Okay, I might have phrased that differently. Is there still as much going on at Chance as their was in the week after RC made the boards? I wouldn't think so. What does go on is without purpose. Over 22% of all posts are held by one member, and over 68% of all are in Posting Games. That leaves 1815 posts some of which actually might make a minimum of sense. "Let's have a, like, totally central place. For everything. And why shouldn't it be mine?" If one member thinks this, well, there's one guy struck with hubris and egomania, but since he's the first he'll likely have success. But since there's dozens of people with that philosophy, we have dozens of guys (and girls) struck with hubris and egomania. And the result is a dozen sites all striving to be the 'central' place. What good does it do? Speaking from experience: I set up the Encyclopedia two months after I joined here - not much difference to you there. I started it because I found out there was a niche that hadn't been filled yet by any other page - we had ~10 graphics archives for BoE, some of which included a little information about the game world: But Akhronath's Archives has a brief section, and Drakefyre's Demesne concentrates primarily on the Vahnatai. There wasn't a site dedicated to this single purpose yet. Am I a hubrid egomaniac for doing so? Absolutely. I should have left this kind of thing to people who knew HTML, people who knew about Ermarian, and most of all people experienced and respected in the community. I won't deny that my motives for getting the project going was to a great part my drive to become popular on these boards. Would I have tried to make the site if there'd been one already with exactly the same purpose? No. I'd have supported the other, just as I've submitted my BoA graphics to the Louvre, would send my BoE scenarios (if I had any) to Alexandria and Spiderweb, and any scenario reviews to the Lyceum or Spiderweb. Point? Find an area that has so far been neglected by the existing sites. I can't think of any right now, but I'm sure you'll find some. :) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/26/technology/26shock.html It appears that "This Land" had quite an impact. I assume some of the reason is its neutrality in dissing both candidates, which gives it a wide-spread audience. ;) -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! quote:That's canon history? In the games? 400 years or no, she definitely had a way with youthful appearance. Yes, I'll give it time, but not mine. :P Come back advertising when you have like 25 members or so, perhaps a statistic of 10 or more posts a day, and are a few months old. It's certainly the policy I should follow if I made a board. There are enough people to invite privately, before you announce it to the public. A community grows like a crystal - from the inside out, not the outside in. You can't give us a shell (ie. empty board) and expect a crystal to form inside. You'll have to start with a seed. ;) Wish you luck! :) -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! When pointing out masses of stupid people, it's sometimes like with the ghost driver on the road... "Darn, what are all those hundreds of idiots doing driving in the wrong direction?" Also, bothering to point out stupidity is sometimes the ego's mechanism for self-protection. :P -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Hey, it would be incredible even were she a year older than now when she wrote it. The poem spooks me for some reason. The repetition of the words and the sinister atmosphere form a dream-like something. A nightmare, even? TM, I tried very hard to make sense out of that Eliot poem, but I will soon have to add it to the poems I like because I don't understand what they're about. They'll have the company of Coleridge's works like Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! fora = plural of forums? Makes sense, though I've never seen it in use. I won't visit those boards. I tried once to be a member of every board I saw, but I ended up spending hours a day on nothing but posting and reading. Finally, I limited the number to three, and I don't post much on the third board now, alas. It looks like I'll have the number up to five in short time, and I know five more that I don't frequent nowadays. In short, unless your board has something to offer besides 10-20 Spiderweb members who have enough time on their hands to join Yet Another Satellite Forum, I won't join. If all members of your forum are also on another forum, and all topics of your forum are also on the same forum... how then can the two boards both continue to exist and remain alive? And if one of these two boards is older, has more members, and has generally more traffic, more topics and more posts... how then can the other forum be successful versus the first one? Ponder that. ;) -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Nope. Won't do any good. I sent Jeff such a site once, and got this response. For all I know, the site is still up and offering its crack. quote:One reason often mentioned for why people who ask for cracks here get stamped as morons pretty unanimously is that these boards are run by the company, thus making it pretty much a request to rip off themselves.
