I've restarted my 3-year-old scenario project again. :) My problem is the scripting as well. And the unhealthy urge to try out everything that's even possible with the editor. I guess doing so doesn't add to the quality of a scenario... -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Yes, Wise Man brought up an interesting point. Spam does not need to contain any actual content, senseless or not. It's astonishing how popular cats are with the Spiderweb population. I'm trying to come up with theories for why that is (maybe introverted people prefer cats, and maybe people who post on message boards of RPG games are introverted? Not sure though.) I had a budgie until two months ago when it passed on into the Land Where Budgerigars Are Eternally Blessed. :( I'm getting a cat as soon as I can. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! The term "copycats" gets a new meaning when you consider Jeff pulled *both* the Nephilim and the Rakshasa out of real world mythology. :P -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Also as spam may be counted various little unrelated historical tidbits that are not fully confirmed anyway. So here goes: The term Spam (or SPAM) is used indiscriminately for all kinds of online information traffic that bears little sense in any way of the word, or is entirely unrelated to the topic it is in response to (or the topic that is normally discussed at the place where it is put). Thus short ad messages on forums (whether mass-produced or not) that have little purpose beyond bringing traffic to a certain site (usually unrelated to the message board itself) are spam, as are advertisement emails sent by the mass, or Instant Messenger ads. 'Spam' can also be used to describe posts on message boards that have little purpose beyond raising traffic on the message board or increasing the member's post count. The origin of the name 'SPAM' has not been verified, but the by far most well-known and plausible theory to date is that it is derived from a brand of canned meat that allegedly shared many properties with today's online spam - ie. lack of taste, gelatinous/rubberlike consistency, etc: Since the acronym Short Pointless Annoying Message has no relation to the canned beef brand, and the latter is verified to actually exist, the former is most likely an Urban Myth. Thus, LPAM is the greatest nonsense I've heard so far. --- Mmmh, is a post about spam in a thread on the same topic actually spam? There would appear to be some sort of a paradox here... Anyway: [ Friday, July 30, 2004 14:30: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Same for me, Alo. I also stress Vah-Nah-TIE on the last syllable. I think it has something to do with them ending in a vowel, but I'm not sure. Edit: Didn't read Alo's post that closely before, but it's exactly the way I do it. The VahnaTAI, but a VAHnatai town. But that would deprive him of the wonderful pleasure of showing off every one of his 16 wonderful scenarios! I've come to think that, like a beard is by some considered the pride of manhood (gah, I'm talking about symbols openly *shown*, so get your mind out of the gutter already), likewise the signature is the symbol of pride of a forum member. Insinuating that someone's signature is too short is a gesture of contempt and belittling, and suggesting to someone to shorten their signature can be taken as a deadly insult among posters. :P [/end jokular rambling] -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! But the Ambrosia forums are related at least through being from the same company. I mean, I don't post in Nethergate or SubTerra (or play them), but still it doesn't feel like there's a gigantic board I have only a teensy little part in, because the people I see posting there are the same people I also see in General. This is a small board (by number of different forums, not population), and most of us know each other well. That wouldn't be the case on a larger board. People who play one Ambrosia game are probably only marginally inclined to play another by the same company, but consider this: What kind of people more commonly play the Geneforge games - those who also play Exile, or those who also play Age of Empires? Therefore, Exile and Geneforge are perfectly fine to have in one board, while Age of Empires and Geneforge aren't. It is an interesting idea to try and attract many members by being 'General' and offering myriads of discussion topics. Alas, it cannot succeed. Here's the reasoning: 1. The few members that are there originally will be disoriented in the multitude of empty forums, even before they become attached to the board by Force of Habit. Thus, they leave before ever becoming rooted in the community. 2. This effect is strengthened by the fact that the forums are concerned with entirely different topics. You will never find any members who are interested in ALL these games (or even most of them), most members will post in only a few of these forums. 3. For the above reasons, members will be unable, both time-wise (I don't have time to read through 100 discussions every time I visit the forums I'm on) and topic-wise, to contribute to more than a few forums in all that mess. 4. Being able to post in only very few sections of a very large board makes one feel unwelcome and inadequate on this forum - not part of the general community, always 'missing out' on something. Believe me, I know how that feels from not being able to follow the Warhammer 40k discussions in my Physics class. Basically, you fail to develop a sense of Communal Identity (let's call it Forum Patriotism for lack of a better term), and leave after a while. --> 5. Therefore boards specifically made with many unrelated subjects in mind are doomed to failure. ____________________________________ Don't make one board with unrelated parts. It feels to members as though you're forcing people to participate in all of these. Limit yourself to one topic, or make separate boards (I strongly advise *against* the latter). -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I got Exile III first, from a shareware collection CD that's included once a year with a computer magazine. I checked out the site pretty soon after that, but my sanity was too strong for me to comprehend anything that was going on at the boards at that time. :P Think there was an "Around the Block in However Long it Takes" RP at the time. And there might have been an incarnation of Sliths vs. Nephilim, but I'm not sure. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. I always split the word into Slith-Zerikai (have you got any idea how hard it is to say thz?), and stress the last syllable. So: slith-zer-ee-KAI. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki!
