Sorry but Board Purge due to disk overage. in General

She didn't mention Announcements, but I can't see how deleting stuff there will save any space... it's only 30 or so posts anyway, not even a hundredth of what remains of General *after* the purge.

Not all topics that have grown old 'die'. Some are 'finished'. It rarely happens, but there are cases.

Of course, for such a thing to occur, the thread must have had a purpose in the first place. I would call this thread 'finished' now, since we have discussed everything necessary, and it's all done now. Maybe the hosting should still be organized here, but then it's done. It's fulfilled its purpose.

When a roleplay or a discussion comes to a conclusion, that does not make the thread worthless. To the contrary. Yet, these threads sink to the bottom of the forum, and 'die'. I'll sure still read some of them.

Why did we save everything, and not just the worthwhile stuff? Because we had two days to go, and it's not really easy to sort out the trash in that time. Now that we have it all, we can sort out what we don't need.

All? No fair!

Well, okay, I got most of it already. Avernum Trilogy, Exile Trilogy, BoE, General and both Geneforges.

Ironically, I had to redo Galactic Core because there was an error (it didn't save all of the threads). Only Nethergate and SubTerra remain unsaved, and those'll be next on my list.

______________________________________________

I'm done. :) When this got announced, I never thought I'd end up with the entire Spiderweb Forum (apart from BoA and Tech) on my hard drive, but that's what has happened. I did General and BoE manually because frankly I find those the most important two of the ones that are to be deleted, and I don't blindly trust my spider.

Next thing is to find a webspace that offers me around 500 Megs cheaply. :P

GC? You should have made that bet about half a day ago. :P That's the time I finished it.

Oh, and BoE, Exile Trilogy and all of General join the ranks of my mirrored boards (I had some trouble with General, and a few things might have slipped through, but I saved most of General manually anyway, that being my favourite forum. :D )

I'll go to bed now, and it might be that Jeff (or Mariann, probably) makes the next purge before I'm back. If the next thing deleted is BoE or GC or the trilogies, it's all right. If it's a Geneforge, tough. But the Geneforge 1/2 boards aren't all that great anyway; iirc mostly newbies asking for hints and walkthroughs. Good night, anyway. Or good afternoon/evening for you guys in the states, and good morning to anyone east of Europe. :)

Since today. I still voted in that poll before I revived the thread. I assume it's being done for saving disk space while they're purging the forum anyway.

I have no idea however if it will remain this way after the forums have been purged.

Okay, I've finished spidering the biggest board we had, Avernum Trilogy! Hooray!

Yes, I'm aware that all I'm doing now has been done, but the program I use only takes 30 minutes to an hour for a board, so I don't see why I shouldn't invest that time into a little extra saving.

Compared to you despers, most people are newbies. :P

Am I though? Seriously, how long do I have to be here before I escape noobhood - ten years? Look, I've been here a year and three months. I know who people are already, no matter how often they change accounts and names. I know all the major satellite boards of Spiderweb and have posted at most, at some time or other. I first visited these boards (without registering) when misc was open. When I registered, Scorp was still here! What do you want, people? <_<

Well, most of it is kinda tough to read. :P

Also, IM and chat is different. I write slang there as well; it's not like it's supposed to be an essay. Forums are usually for sharing ideas on a much bigger scale, and with more people. N DATS Y I g0 2 teh TR4bbL3 OF SP33King coharntly on Boards. :)

StD: The System is Down. I've been trying to find out more since Friday, but without success. Logo is nowhere to be found (maybe off to some hut in Sibiria by now, hoping we don't find him :P ).

Prem and Dave IMed me, and I did the same with Motrax. Nobody's got a clue, not even the admins I've been able to reach. I smell bollocks.

I've got BoE 23-30, but some of that has been done already. And Galactic Core (eh, Richard White or whatever it's called now) in its entirety. Also, Exile Trilogy. This program is a godsend.

How much is the total disk space anyway? Let's organize the hosting/webspace now...

I'm running my spider through the forums one by one now. I've got the settings to only get the forum pages and the topic pages, so each takes less than half an hour.

I'll probably be done with all of it in no time, but at the moment I don't have time to check through what has been claimed and what hasn't.

Gah. I should really stop doing this. But it's just so much fun, as opposed to just drearily going through the threads and saving them.

I think it is perfectly okay, yes. People who make a public forum are putting themselves in view of the public, no matter how hard it is to find.

Also, these forums provide a nice contrast to the satellite boards of Spiderweb. Compared to this, TCOA is a forum of the highest intellect and seriousness!

Hehe. I noticed this thread when saving... First post ever?

I wonder how many oldbies are here whose first post is still in existence. :P

Edit: Simultaneously using the opportunity to try for the record of the oldest topic revival ever.

Do the unpurged forums include the BoA Editor Board, the BoA Game Board, or both? Just to avoid later accidents.

I save the forums by page number anyway, like 'page1.html', 'page2.html', in subdirectories named after the topic number. Check the URL for that one; it's the number after 't='. This one's number is 1944. It's unique for every single topic ever made, so I don't think there's a better primary index.

Finding the thread in the database after that is easy enough: Check the url of the thread you want in the saved forum page (there are 13 for General currently), then open the thread directory corresponding to the number in the url.

Kelandon: *Jedi handwave* Whoever spoke of you? Of course I meant Thuryl.

Djur: I didn't consider that possibility.

Mh, so I guess the reason I haven't been banned yet was because my mirror program works slower. Or it's because of the router. Or the proxy. Or something like that. I'm getting ahead wonderfully here, and if it didn't stop to pick up all the 'post edit' links (all of which point to "Only mods/admins may do this" pages) in every thread, I'd be done long ago.

Djur is banned? Then why doesn't that show up? I can't see anything wrong. And we're not doing anything wrong Kel. We had the blessings of Mariann to do this.
Are you Djur? If you were, it'd show up for you all right. As it happens, I don't think the public is notified of bans... ;)

Edit: From Djur's Profile.

Thuryl, linking me to another topic I just posted in, where I *also* didn't understand what wget is, doesn't help much. :P

I figured it is some kind of site copier, but why would its use lead to a ban?

We don't need to (I don't even know if it works yet). Just a note for the future...

Also, I'm terminally paranoid and I just couldn't bear the thought of not having the most important (ie, RP and Discussion) threads saved to my own harddrive. What if the computer of the guy who saved them crashes? Or there was a connection error nobody noticed, and a single page didn't get saved? :P

Ol' Aran, in turn, has never seen Fox News, and would probably consider there to be thousands of reasons not to. However, he still intends to watch at least a bit of it, in order to see for himself.

That is what separates him from closedminded people.

I use a program called WinHTTrack.

Also, I now found a way to bypass the prune - after all, there is a URL that already includes the prune parameters set to "all threads":

http://www.ironycentral.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=1&DaysPrune=1000&submit=Go

Using that as a starting point, I can get all the threads that are still available in General.
