Slarty's Comic Strip in General

Can anyone explain this sudden rush on gimmicks? I mean, all of a sudden everyone appears to be updating some SW-related page or other, or perpetuating some particular meme. Tyran hosts the general chats, Slarty has his webcomic, Diki is making a drama script...

I haven't noticed such a trend before.

Here's my theory: Posts have their own unique, self-incrementing index (which is never displayed). The recent posts feature in a profile uses this index, and has the posts' corresponding numbers saved somewhere. When *i deleted the last posts, their keys were reassigned to the posts made immediately afterward (Very Bad Thing in database design, but that's UBB for you). So the recent posts in his profile still point to the old keys, but the keys now point to new topics and posts.

It's just a theory. Also, it's just a more elaborate way of saying "Because UBB sucks".

--

Another wtf I stumbled over along the way: Have you noticed that the links point to the post directly (ie, the place on the page via the "#" suffix) only if the post is not on the first page? If the post is on the first page, the link points to the top of the page. If it's on any of the following pages, the page will automatically scroll down to the post.

If there is more than one claimant to the papal office, then isn't the one not residing in Rome by customary definition an "antipope"?

For the purpose of the argument, wouldn't the two be equivalent? The point is that he understood something very far removed from what you were saying.

Edit: Also, it is more polite, if someone appears to be speaking nonsense, to assume they meant something rather than to assume they were speaking nonsense. ;)

No New Topics For A Day (Monday the 13th) in General

Member # 2984

The last topic I started was about a week ago, and the next topic I'll start is probably the March stats topic (assuming, of course, that the topics aren't starting to get on people's nerves by now).

Anyway, all this gives me the following mental image.

quote:
There were some men in the village who liked to kill kittens. Every day, the community would be shocked to find the mangled bodies of the cute animals that had falled victim to this wanton bloodlust. All pleading and threats fell on deaf ears; the killers were shunned from the community, but their slaying continued. So finally, the elders called a meeting that all of the community (except the kitten-killers) attended, and they came to a unanimous decision: Henceforth, none of them would ever kill a cat on Monday.
Apologies for comparing the posting of pointless topics with the killing of kittens. I get far too attached to the forum, and every crappy topic I see is a stab in my heart.

Edit: Managed what on my own, the protection removal? As I said, it wasn't so much a server failure as a glitch in the .htaccess file, which got moved to the top directory. I deleted it, so now the protection is gone again. Easy.

And I hadn't heard that Jeff broke his word on unbanning you earlier. I can only hope that this is because he was completely unable to go online - and not, say, because he found he had Other Things to Do (leaving aside pure spite). Avoiding a ban is a Very Bad Thing, but there is little that beats banning someone and then not finding the time to unban them.

bmp is Windows-only? I remember opening bmp files when working with a mac in school, but we might have been using a special utility or plugin for that.

You got the compression formats right though. Also, gif is apparently a proprietary, patented format that png (as an open-source format) is supposed to replace.

However, when I looked it up on Wikipedia just now, I read that the gif patent expires on August 11 this year.

Posting "In before the lock" should be a banning offense. <_<

Now, show the topic mercy and consign it to a painless demise.

I suppose you can help speed up the "passing on" bit, but I'd warn you that Spiderweb mods, as a rule, are tough as nails, are bred to survive, and are proficient in various martial arts. :P

--

They are also people who start topics only when they make sense, who keep their calm in the midst of flamewars, whose powers of spelling and grammar is beyond part, and whom you would implicitly trust even if you dislike them. Based on this, I really have my doubts you'd fit in the group.

There are also occasional mod elections. Occasional might be the wrong word, since there have been a total of two in the history of this board. On another note, Kelandon had a proposal for the next mod elections last year.

Argh.

Wow, this would've been an excellent set-up to "vanish" without trace. First I lost access last evening (I think you remember me leaving the chat without warning?), and I just couldn't get it to reconnect again. Now this.

I haven't checked the site yet. I'll see if I can remove this myself, or if my webhost has something to complain about (naughty things at stuff.ermarian.net possibly?) and thus blocked my site temporarily. Keep fingers crossed.

Edit: I don't know how, but somehow a protection I actually did place over one directory a few days ago apparently "spread" to cover the whole site. Don't ask me how. I've changed it again, so I hope you are now able to get to the site again.

Dude, you've started the last ten topics - all the way from 3320 to 3329. Since they are without exception useless in the extreme, and there is no excuse for not posting all this in the same thread, I really think you should stop this. Spiderweb frowns on people who start many topics in a short time.

On a side note... do any of their games have worlds randomly generated ?? This is another feature I search for in my games. Thanks!

Last November I began playing around with algorithms to generate randomized dungeons (basically ADOM-style, with rooms and corridors). It didn't get far, besides it would be hell to implement in Avernumscript.

--

Still... then so were framed animations in BoE, right?

Oh, and I would be very disappointed if there was BoG. If previous trends are an indication, this would imply that Jeff drops BoA like a three-weeks-old fish, stops updating or bugfixing it, and leaves the whole designing community bogged down (haha pun) with slow site updates and virtually no support.
