I love this...

So the Avernum Trilogy's next? Cue the Xian skull...

These should SO have included "sociopolitical objectivism".

Spy.there: That refers to "displayed names", not "login names". We ordinary non-mods can't see the latter.

That is also why I mentioned the password list, which would be about equally accessible to me.

Jewels: My sarcasm detector is shut off for tonight. I meant "all your" passwords, as in all those of the community, not all those of you, Jewels.

The Silent Assassin is now under the delusion that he is a subject in a medical laboratory, and that this universe was created to decieve and test him.

Now, now. You really should be here longer before you can start telling your theories about what happened when.

In fact, the signature bit was first. It was a kind of hallmark I put on Alo 0.1 to get some sort of stable pattern into his posts - you'll notice that his posts are structured far more consistently than that of others*, and are therefore easier to generate despite their complex content and the deep analytic power that is inherent in them.

This depth, combined with a truly stunning frequency, could only be achieved with a truly optimized program running on a dedicated server (which runs on a herbal extract you may also know by the name "Skribbane").

The name change is just something I coded in in protest back in 2004 when Drakey refused to give him a custom title. Drakey, of course, has known about the truth behind Alorael almost since the beginning, and what he told me was some variant of "No, you will not get a custom title for a spam bot you wrote, no matter how deep his posts. Now scat."

* Edit: By which, of course, I do not mean that the other members on this board are *also* bots I coded. Honestly. I mean, Ed, would you truly believe I would set up a message board and populate it with my AIs simply to make a fool out of you?

Uh...

It's like a version number. Nothing to be scared about, in version 4.808 - and in fact since about 4.0 - he has been running somewhat stable. The earlier versions had been a little prone to get into discussions of religion. :P

And no, you cannot have the source code...

Depending on your configuration, getting outside files could be disabled. However, there are three different commands that can normally read the content of outside files.

include(url)When used on a PHP script on the same server, it executes that script as if it were in the same page. When used on a normal page (or a url prefixed with http - even on the same server) it opens or executes that page and echoes the output.

fopen(url, mode)This will open a file for reading (r), writing (w) or in several other modes. It works on outside files too, although of course only in reading mode.

copy(url, destination)This will copy the file in "url" to the path in "destination". The url can be on another server.

This last is the one I've used for the endeavor. That shouldn't say anything, because that stat counter is a script I wrote before I actually learned PHP, and over the months I've been making continuous small changes so that it'll keep working despite the odds. If I ever have time... :P

To be honest, if I got a .dmg file from anyone, I'd be baffled as to what it was, let alone what to do with it. Some kind of encrypted file? Does dmg stand for "damage"? "Database migration"? "Doubtlessly mysterious GIF"?
Do I try to open it in a Paint program, or is it an executable?

Of course, I'd use Google or Wikipedia, but still, I would be totally bewildered for a few seconds... :P

Oh, and I saw the rankings before Aran killed them. He had 812 posts last month. Now, why again did the rankings get pulled?

1. You can be a captive of a pit in two-dimensional cartoon space without being in the pit, if said pit is wide enough. Look at Alex's drawing...

2. You only had a fleeting glimpse, which is why I won't complain about inaccuracy. But seriously, if you will take the time to compare my postcount in last month and now, you will see that while it was quite a lot, it was barely half that number.

To prove the point: How is a raven like a writing desk?

---

quote:

NEMESIS
by [[come on, guess. hint: "fhtag'n!"]]

Through the ghoul-guarded gateways of slumber,
Past the wan-mooned abysses of night,
I have lived o'er my lives without number,
I have sounded all things with my sight;
And I struggle and shriek ere the daybreak, being
driven to madness with fright.

I have whirled with the earth at the dawning,
When the sky was a vaporous flame;
I have seen the dark universe yawning
Where the black planets roll without aim,
Where they roll in their horror unheeded, without
knowledge or lustre or name.

I had drifted o'er seas without ending,
Under sinister grey-clouded skies
That the many-forked lightning is rending,
That resound with hysterical cries;
With the moans of invisible daemons that out
of the green waters rise.

I have plunged like a deer through the arches
Of the hoary primordial grove,
Where the oaks feel the presense that marches
And stalks on where no spirit dares rove,
And I flee from a thing that surrounds me, and leers
through dead branches above.

I have stumbled by cave-riddled mountains
That rise barren and bleak from the plain,
I have drunk of the frog-foetid fountains
That ooze down to the marsh and the main;
And in hot cursed tarns I have seen things I care not
to gaze on again.

I have scanned the vast ivy-clad palace,
I have trod its untenanted hall,
Where the moon rising up from the valleys
Shows the tapestried things on the walls;
Strange figures dischordantly woven, that I cannot
endure to recall.

I have peered from the casements in wonder
At the mouldering meadows around,
At the many-roofed village laid under
The curse of a grave-girdled ground;
And from rows of white urn-carven marble I listen
intently for sound.

I have haunted the tombs of the ages,
I have flown on the pinions of fear
Where the smoke-belching Erebus rages;
Where the jokulls look snow-clad and drear:
And in realms where the sun of the desert consumes
what it never can cheer.

I was old when the pharoahs first mounted
The jewel-decked throne by the Nile;
I was old in those epochs uncounted
When I, and I only, was vile;
And Man, yet untainted and happy, dwelt in bliss on
the far Arctic isle.

Oh, great was the sin of my spirit,
And great is the reach of its doom;
Not the pity of Heaven can cheer it,
Nor can respite be found in the tomb:
Down the infinite aeons come beating the wings of
unmerciful gloom.

Through the ghoul-guarded gateways of slumber,
Past the wan-mooned abysses of night,
I have lived o'er my lives without number,
I have sounded all things with my sight;
And I struggle and shriek ere the daybreak, being
driven to madness with fright.

Two things before I give you the stats. Well, actually three. One is on-topic, the others aren't, but in the interest of keeping the forum uncluttered I won't post a second thread. As a word of warning, all three require some degree of sanity.

First off-topic thing. Happy birthday to Rosycat, who has sadly departed from these boards, leaving them an overall less funny and colder place. On the odd chance you see this, we all miss you, especially the weather balloon crew. Come back some time.

Second. It's tricky to make a statement of personal opinion without making it either a) political or b) sappy or both, so I won't pretend to try. This day marks the third anniversary of the death of Rachel Corrie, a peace activist who was crushed to death by a bulldozer in the Gaza strip. She was with the activist organization ISM, trying to prevent the Israeli army from destroying whole streets of houses that apparently were too close to the Egyptian border for comfort. The assertion was that the houses were housing terrorists. Make of that what you will.

Rachel Corrie was working for a cause she believed in, and though she possibly didn't intend to, she died for that. I think a moment of silence is in order today, for her, for the countless people who have risked or are still risking their life to keep down the fire in that powder barrell, and for the countless lives that have been claimed and are still being claimed by said fire.

---------------------------------------------

Back on topic, and on a less sombre, but no less serious note. Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that one of my gimmicks (I was going to call them "services", but laughed at the thought) could be a long-term detriment or even an immediate risk to this community. I considered that possibility when I started offering it, but pushed it aside at the time. It has come back to haunt me.

I am referring of course to the top posters ranking. This part of the endeavor stats appears to encourage rivalry and competition; specifically making frequent posting a competitive sport.

Don't get me wrong; I don't advocate cutting back on wanton posting. This is Spiderweb. However, I believe people should post a lot of nonsense because they have a lot of nonsense to say, not because they have to say a lot of nonsense to get their ranking up.

When I first wrote the spidering script that mirrored the profile info of Spiderweb members, this was supposed to be a supplement to a project codenamed "The Great Endeavor" (hence "endeavor" as the folder name) we were doing on Polaris - a list of member numbers and corresponding names for reference. It was done manually first, so I made a PHP script that automatized this. Then I found that it was very easy to run it repeatedly to get statistical data.

I gathered this data to calculate things I was interested at the time - seasonal activities, postage per member, and so on. The ranking was a byproduct that seemed obvious at the time. I started it because it seemed interesting; I continued it because people wanted me to.

However, this forum is not a spam competition. It was and is still the official message board of a game developing company. Last week's controversy, regardless of the view you take on it, has painfully driven that point home. I still think that specifically what Jeff did in that instance was a bad knee-jerk reaction. However, in a more general sense, it made me realize that we are using this forum for a purpose not intended by its owner. The existence of the General community, unrelated to the games and heavy on diskspace usage as it is, is a matter of tolerance on Jeff's side. And some people appear not to realize this.

Recently, I have been approached by numerous unnamed persons who asked me questions ranging from "when will you do the next ranking" over "where am I standing right now" to "can you do the stats at such-and-such a time so I will be on top". And, bluntly, I'm a bit shocked.

Someone once compared my forum-data organizing efforts to Google. Well, at the moment I feel like I imagine Google's creators feeling when they realized their top search terms were for porn. "Sure, it was a no-brainer, but heck, have we really contributed to turning the internet into THAT?"

--

Fortunately, there is a very simple solution. The statistical updates will continue for the time being. I will gather the same data I always have. All aggregated stats will be published here and at the dedicated website.

The ranking will not. The only place displayed names and member numbers will come up is in the search function of the website, and the archived profiles.

Finally, in response to another question I've been asked a lot: I do not think your posts are spam, nor pointless - and that's to all of you who asked. Certainly not as pointless as some of mine. But I want to remind everyone that the purpose of a forum is still communication, and communication is destroyed when the content is valued higher by its quantity than its quality. Sane thought for the day.

And with that off my chest, here are the new stats.

--------------------------------------

I. Joining Rate

113 members joined, and 63 of them posted. This is an increase from last month, but only slightly above average in general.

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 151/87
May 2005: 78/43
June 2005: 147/91
July 2005: 153/88
August 2005: 108/62
September 2005: 91/52
October 2005: 81/43
November 2005: 83/41
December 2005: 85/52
January 2006: 136/86
February 2006: 100/59
March 2006: 113/63

II. Activity

63 new posters and 261 older posters make an active community of 324. Again, an increase from last month, but not as high as in January.

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 360 (273)
May 2005: 262 (219)
June 2005: 325 (232)
July 2005: 352 (264)
August 2005: 293 (231)
September 2005: 256 (204)
October 2005: 229 (186)
November 2005: 234 (193)
December 2005: 239 (187)
January 2006: 333 (247)
February 2006: 268 (209)
March 2006: 324 (263)

III. Postage

An amazing number of 7355 posts were written in total - this is especially amazing considering that the last update was only 27 days ago, what with February being shorter and me doing the stats a day early.

This is reflected in the 272 posts per day, which is (by less than a post ahead of July 2005) the highest daily average yet. July is still ahead of it in terms of posts per member; 22.7 for this month makes it only the second greatest average.

Also, 0.84 per posts per member is a record. However, it is influenced by the shorter measuring period (I can explain it if really necessary).

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 7576 | 186 | 21 | 0.47
May 2005: 4723 | 169 | 18 | 0.52
June 2005: 7267 | 251 | 22.4 | 0.77
July 2005: 8691 | 271.6 | 24.7 | 0.77
August 2005: 5917 | 190.9 | 20.1 | 0.65
September 2005: 5412 | 174.6 | 21.1 | 0.68
October 2005: 4477 | 149.3 | 19.5 | 0.65
November 2005: 4389 | 141.6 | 18.8 | 0.61
December 2005: 3958 | 131.9 | 16.6 | 0.55
January 2006: 6580 | 204.3 | 19.8 | 0.61
February 2006: 4555 | 153.24 | 17 | 0.57
March 2006: 7355 | 272.56 | 22.7 | 0.84

Good night! :)

Dream quest to the Mountains of Madness, Aran?

Well, I did read a large part of Lovecraft's collected works back in Summer/Fall last year. I think that's present in my posts in MoS as well:

quote:
They say that there are places deep in the foundations of the world, where nameless things gnaw the roots of time. Madness takes those that come upon them.
...
"Two score years I wandered the world. Where the boldest humans never trod, I have made my path. Caverns thought to be part of legend I have passed through. Primal forests, and ancient ruins in them, I have explored. I have mapped foul Ilyat in the blighted swamps, I have beheld the iron pillars of Gen in the eternal ice, and in the great plains of Shanaar, where the air shivers in the heat and shows strange visions to the lost traveler, I have walked through long-forgotten Khom and entered the Golden Temple."
Also,

quote:

Lorca's "Romance Sonámbulo" goes here.

—Alorael, whose poetic talents start and end at the limerick. He once wrote a ballad, and it proved his point.
quote:
Romance Sonambulo

Green, how I want you green.
Green wind. Green branches.
The ship out on the sea
and the horse on the mountain.
With the shade around her waist
she dreams on her balcony,
green flesh, her hair green,
with eyes of cold silver.
Green, how I want you green.
Under the gypsy moon,
all things are watching her
and she cannot see them.

Green, how I want you green.
Big hoarfrost stars
come with the fish of shadow
that opens the road of dawn.
The fig tree rubs its wind
with the sandpaper of its branches,
and the forest, cunning cat,
bristles its brittle fibers.
But who will come? And from where?
She is still on her balcony
green flesh, her hair green,
dreaming in the bitter sea.

--My friend, I want to trade
my horse for her house,
my saddle for her mirror,
my knife for her blanket.
My friend, I come bleeding
from the gates of Cabra.
--If it were possible, my boy,
I'd help you fix that trade.
But now I am not I,
nor is my house now my house.
--My friend, I want to die
decently in my bed.
Of iron, if that's possible,
with blankets of fine chambray.
Don't you see the wound I have
from my chest up to my throat?
--Your white shirt has grown
thirsty dark brown roses.
Your blood oozes and flees
around the corners of your sash.
But now I am not I,
nor is my house now my house.
--Let me climb up, at least,
up to the high balconies;
Let me climb up! Let me,
up to the green balconies.
Railings of the moon
through which the water rumbles.

Now the two friends climb up,
up to the high balconies.
Leaving a trail of blood.
Leaving a trail of teardrops.
Tin bell vines
were trembling on the roofs.
A thousand crystal tambourines
struck at the dawn light.

Green, how I want you green,
green wind, green branches.
The two friends climbed up.
The stiff wind left
in their mouths, a strange taste
of bile, of mint, and of basil
My friend, where is she--tell me--
where is your bitter girl?
How many times she waited for you!
How many times would she wait for you,
cool face, black hair,
on this green balcony!
Over the mouth of the cistern
the gypsy girl was swinging,
green flesh, her hair green,
with eyes of cold silver.
An icicle of moon
holds her up above the water.
The night became intimate
like a little plaza.
Drunken "Guardias Civiles"
were pounding on the door.
Green, how I want you green.
Green wind. Green branches.
The ship out on the sea.
And the horse on the mountain.

-- Federico Garcia Lorca

Googling, no. Linking from Spiderweb specifically, yes. And those topics are not really what I meant - I've seen several times that members were talked about behind their backs, and it was generally agreed that that would be removed if it got really bad. CoC aside, there are some things you would not want some people to see.

I am still unclear about which logs were withheld because they might contain questionable material in general, and which were withheld because they have controversial conversations about this board. So far I have seen only the latter I believe (though my open chat window might have logged some of the former) for which I am thankful. I mean, if it's dirty enough for Spiderweb... :P

Anyone ever dared to write a book? in The Avernum Trilogy

Oddly enough, if you'd searched the BoA forum you would have found a rather mediocre attempt I finished back in November last year. It is at least related to the game world (the main characters are Vahnatai and Nephilim), but it takes place in a remote, pre-human past.

As far as fan extensions to the world go, the scenario designers of Blades of Exile had some kind of consensus (that turned out to be a lot less consistent once one started asking deeper questions though...). At some point, there was an ongoing BoE-based roleplay called "The Arena" which became the origin for a lot of Ermarian lore (including the name Ermarian).

Also, Drakefyre has a theory of all sentient life having been created by the Vahnatai.

Finally, there's an attempt going on to combine these extensions (along with regular game canon) in a kind of Encyclopedia.

Oh, and welcome. :)

What error message did you get? :P

Same. It was argh's final topic though, and I got linked to it at the same time Stareye said he was banning him. So I really should have expected it...

Maintaining the Vahnatai's coolness is something of a lost cause, I would say. There are some other people who would agree.

There should be an option for vahnatai player characters.
There should be an option for non-Vahnatai villains.

Edit: That said, I would find it very cool if the Vahnatai culture had a little more light shed on it in future games. That, or just phase them out. You can't keep something permanently mysterious; you'll have to either get around to actually explain them or risk them becoming a mere plot device. A kind of villain-ex-machina.
