It's been some time since I revived a perennial topic (can't remember if I ever did), but here's one I've been meaning to do since about a week or so ago.

Basically, post poetry.

Since we all know that Spiderweb attracts creative minds, I am sure that a lot of people have their own efforts ready to tort-- entertain the community with. Since our sanities are safely outside, I'm also certain we'll be able to survive even the worst of it, so don't hesitate to post even if you think it is the most godawful crap wreaked on mankind since ever a Vogon picked up a quill.

Finally, to avoid excluding those who prefer reading poetry to writing it, you can post works you have read and enjoyed as well.

-

I forgot whether it is appropriate to say "Go!" at the end of these topics...

---

I'm unsure whether I should start it off and risk making the topic look like a cause added after the intent (of posting my stuff), or wait for someone else to start and risk making it look like I chickened out. :P

Ah well, guess I'll start. In the way of making sense, this one ranks pretty low (it was written at about 6 am in a train, in a less than lucid moment)...

quote:
Beyond the shadowy hills there lies
The land of a race with crimson eyes.
Where looming, towering figures rise
Above the plains where darkness lies
And cast about their baleful eyes
Upon a folk that never dies,
A world whose knowledge death defies
And where the deathless silence cries
A sound of rage or joy likewise
But here the silent void defies
All noise, its own unspoken cries
Upon a folk that never dies,
Upon a race that ever lies,
Where truth is but a poor disguise
For a nightmare land whose name defies
Both sanity and its demise
Land of a race with crimson eyes
Land of a folk that never dies
Land of a people that ever lies
Land of a race that death defies
Land of a folk whose unheard cries
Echo from spaces where madness lies.

In Leng of the eternal ice
I met that race with crimson eyes
And learnt their lore and heard their cries
And read the silent libraries
That held the ancient knowledge wise
And there I learnt of their demise
In grief they waited, their lonely cries
To echo from the vaults likewise
And if I strained my ears and eyes
I could perceive where madness lies:
In the land of a race with crimson eyes
In the land of a folk that never dies
In the land of a people that ever lies
In the land of a race that death defies.

Beyond the shadowy hills it lies
Beyond the silver stars that rise
Above the plains where darkness lies.

Given we are all in different timezones (my sleep patterns alone put me in 3-4 distinct ones over the course of a week...) it's not surprising we overlap randomly around the clock.

And perhaps if we have enough random chats, the logging effort will end, and we no longer need to watch what we are saying. :P

Although a flood of data didn't stop me from continuing with the PPP, so I guess there is little hope for that...

There are two categories for titles. The first kind goes to people who do something useful, and the second goes to people who talk a lot. The first kind makes sense, and the second doesn't, so they really fit the ones they are given quite well.

Cartographer and BoE Posse belong to the first; sadly, mine appears to be solidly in the second group. (I had one shot at the first with "Exile Historian", but that was it).

Experience is awarded whenever a monster is killed. If more than one opponents are killed in a battle, the experience is added each time one dies.

Back in July 2003, I had a custom title that was actually relevant. Around then, Zharrad and I started the Encyclopedia Ermariana, and I annoyed the hell out of the BoE community by interrogating them about the history of Ermarian. The result was that I got titled "Exile Historian" for a week. That was Stareye's doing. Wherever you see a title that makes sense, odds are he made it. :P

The rest have been Drakey making little inside jokes to himself. I was made "A very important date" in March last year and "Painting the roses red" only a week or so ago; both are Alice references

Needless to say, if there is any hidden meaning in these lines, it escapes me.

So once the gif patent expires in August, that'll be it, right? No more legal restrictions?

Or will they still try to come after you if they can prove you have used gif files before that date? :P

Forgive me for not being intimate with patent law, but is there still a risk in using something the patent of which has expired? Can the patent be renewed?

Also, I am on a PC and have a program named StuffIt that did not cost me anything - I might have given them an email address when I downloaded, but it wasn't one I use. It's the only program that lets me make and unzip .rar files.

However, I am not sure if we are talking about the same software or the same version of it. I have never managed to decompress a .sit file with it - although I don't know whether this was because the .sit file was corrupted or the program was incompatible.

I was entering numbers at random :P

Originally, the sample scenario was Bahssikava, attributed to Terror's Martyr and being lambasted with a 1.1 rating from Kelandon. Then, I thought I'd try something a little more... nondescript. After all, it is supposed to be filler.

There are a lot of problems still to iron out on that page. For example, the small row of stars (indicating the rating) is quite vague, besides leaving an opaque white rectangle. The scenario icon is forced into 120x120 dimensions, even if that would enlarge, deform or pixellate it. But I'm in no hurry.

I suppose if there is no way to be completely safe, the easiest route could be to ignore it for now?

--

Also, when I said "nothing solid in the works" five days ago, I didn't expect that to change so soon. What I have in the works is rudimentary and not even half done, but it is certainly solid (or will be once I'm finished). There's a preview picture in my sig...

The aim: marks a protocol. A browser seeing an aim:// (or aim:) is supposed to open whatever default application you use for AIM. Since the UBB renders this http://aim/, the links gets destroyed.

So do I, by the way. Although I usually favor png instead of gif because of that patent thing I've heard, but not read a lot about.

Also, the website CPeters linked to appears to be a good few years older in terms of updates than the Wikipedia entry on gifs. Therefore, if the Wiki entry says the patent expires soon, I'd be inclined to believe them...

Arancaytar believes that Slartucker is talking not about himself, but about the character based on him in Dikiyoba's story. Since they are two different entities (Slarty controls the first, and Dikiyoba the second), it would make sense to speak of them in the third person. :)
