Although it's cute.

Goodness, people talking over each other's heads this long is painful to watch.

Anyway, I came here to note that Zephyr seemed to have been uncanned, only to find it had already been noted in every way possible. So I guess I have nothing to add.

Given the 3800 topic JadeWolf posted, I agree: "What about JadeWolf?"

Once in the quote, the name is part of the post, as is the edit line.

Anomalies with post counts and names that only update once you edit the post in a thread have to do with server-side caching, I am told.

We'd need the purges otherwise, probably. Flat files or database, the posts take diskspace, and if that is limited, then some stuff has to be deleted every once in a while.

Also, Commodore Ashby, what was the second time in the past few minutes, indicating to you that I am out to get you? :P

Does "for a while" translate to "quite a bit more a year"? :P

--

Also, I experimented with this a while back (a bit after PPP3, I think, so it would have been in January) after I noticed several PDNs were duplicates.

What I found is that

1. You can't set your login name to someone else's login name (when registering).

2. You can't set your displayed name to someone else's login name.

(3?) You can't set your login name to someone else's displayed name (when registering) - I didn't try this, but it wouldn't make sense otherwise.

4. You can set your displayed name to someone else's displayed name.

I could be Lady Davida, or Pokemon, or Kapfen. I couldn't be Sir David, Commander Edward or Alorael.

--

Add to that the flat file horror I just found out about, and you probably have utter chaos. David, if you registered the login name "Sir David" and now can't use it as a displayed name, then I have no idea what happened.

The second point, incidentally, is a fairly recent addition. You will notice the significance by the distinction, for example, that nobody so much as blinked when Public Enemy got the Boot, but Creators and TM's banning have nearly sent the boards into riots.

I ordered, paid for and received BoA within a single half hour, but that was on a Tuesday evening (midday, Jeff's time) and before A4 was out. He's probably a lot more busy now than usually.

It's not a "server", it's a software. A server is a computer, ubb is a program that runs on it.

Oh, and most of what I know I find out by reading. :)

Due to some concerns I've been over the company site of UBB (the messageboard software that powers this board) just now, and found out two things.

1. It's not once, twice, but three times as expensive as, for example, Invision.

2. It stores its posts (and hold on tight while reading this) in flat files.

Now, a lot of you won't know what a flat file is. That's what database people call a normal text file. Imagine that posts you have ever written - all >270000 of them - are stored in text files, that are read and written to when you post and edit your posts. Do you still wonder why the search is so slow? Why things like the deletion of Mystery Man and Saunders happen?

Can you imagine finding out that all your life you have thought you were living on a planet, but suddenly you find out the world is in fact flat, hexagonal, and carried by a turtle? And you have lived on it all your life?

---

In other news, ben's occasional references to "the database" and SQL quotes like

quote:
update ubb_members set title="The Sniper" where id=335
Do not apply.

IF I EVER BECOME AN EVIL OVERLORD:
When I've captured my adversary and he says, "Look, before you kill me, will you at least tell me what this is all about?" I'll say, "No." and shoot him. No, on second thought I'll shoot him then say "No."

He's already canned. What else can happen?

Until recently, grounds for banning were pretty demanding: You had to swear, or post porn, or advertise, or ask for help with piracy, etc. Pointless topics didn't quite cut it, not in the order of magnitude we're seeing.

You do realize that this skews the rating upwards by an insane amount? I mean, you do notice that nobody sane would buy a game whose demo they would rate at 2.1, right? Oh wait, you finished Homeland, sorry.

I've played it for an hour. You'll need a damn good shrink to bring out the repressed memory though.

2.0 for trying to be Diablo (which I'd give 4.5) and failing due to the crappy graphics and crappier interface.
Some credit for not crashing my computer upon installation. Although on second thoughts, that might have been less traumatizing.

Yes, but they are supposedly humanoid. I find it far easier to accept the innate ability to genderchange in mythical, highly magical reptiles than in gene-manipulated clones who look kind of like humans.

Also, I give it 6.0. It could be lower, but I am trying to eliminate the peer pressure factor. In its defense, it had nice graphics, a smooth engine and, in the way of breaking cliché, a cute female lead who got murdered messily midway through the plot.

Edit: By "plot", I naturally mean the closest Geneforge equivalent.

Oh right, the "are you ****ting me" part... I had speculated that might sort of remain unnoticed, but the atmosphere is too rife with controversy to make that even remotely possible.

'tis a tribute to the one and only Ash. Compare to the kind of inspiring scene where in "Spartacus" (a film I only read about on Wikipedia btw), everyone gets up one by one saying "I am Spartacus".

Or, if you favor less action-packed movies, the equally inspiring scene in "Dead Poets' Society" (a film I read the book of, but never saw) where, at the end, all the students climb on their desk in a mute protest as their English teacher Mr. Keating leaves the classroom.

What passed between Jeff and Ash is unrelated. What Ash did might have been impolite, and also unwise, but the punishment did not fit the crime.

And a community should stick together.
