That is what I was trying to imply ever so subtly. In the spirit of this mangled, half forgotten quote of yore: quote:It was in someone's sig. I don't know whose. Saunders? Morgan? Arctic? quote:Except I'm not ending combat. Since BoA apparently allows parties to use stairways (and portals?) to other towns while in combat mode, I just have a single character walk through the trap and enter the stairway, thus placing my party in the upper level (and ending combat mode automaticall). Using blocked-to-monster spaces could only work if you put them around the stairway in the other town, but that would likely generate nasty crashes. Since combat mode is ended implicitly by the town change, I guess having party placement fail on town entry would cause something bad. However, using combat blocks to prevent the party from entering the trap in combat mode (I've seen this before, so it obviously exists) would fix it. Of course, a more brutal fix would just prevent the party from using the stairway in combat mode, potentially leaving them stuck inside the barrier. But that would be cruel. And in many of the greatest games ever, the number of distinct game graphics is limited by 256 - the size of the ASCII character set. Seriously, graphics make a game look great, but in quality RPGs - especially RPGs developed on a low budget, without an expensive team of artists to design it - they should take second place after gameplay and plot. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Do not question the ways of Imban. I have posted many times in karma topics, and Imban has rated me down every single time. I have no clue how he does it. Out of curiosity, is Exile 3 larger than the first two games, in terms of area and towns? I've noticed that the towns on the surface seemed much more generic than the ones in the caves - not so much "noticed", but I found it hard to remember if a certain name belonged to a barkeeper in Pergies or an apprentice mage in Shayder. That would never have happened in Exile; I'm wondering if that is because the area was smaller, or the characters were more unique. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. The technical implementation and sound use of the English language alone would make it a 5 at least no matter what the plot. The plot itself is not spectacular, but I'd give it 7.8. Or roundabouts. For comparison, I would have rated Druids of Krell at 9.1, Bahssikava at 8.5 and Cresent Valley at 4.0. I don't know if this has been discussed already, but if exploring in combat mode (which I do almost always), you can enter the northern room with the beams on the first level of the tower, and if you cross it in the same turn, you can bypass the beams. Or was this meant to be the solution? -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Uh. Is that link supposed to work? If I remember correctly, you need a username/password combination to log in to SW's ftp site. I haven't tried the one I got when I bought BoE, but reason tells me they've changed it since. Edit: Apparently you can log in anonymously. I would guess you don't get access to the directories to the full versions in that case. Just imagine it: All the practical benefits (destruction) of an insanely powerful explosion, but no personal risk! -- While on the topic of trivial errors: The Special Item description of the explosive seems to be cut off at the last word in the Windows version (the displayed length might vary as it did in BoE the other way around). quote:-- Oh, and "stakes"=>"steaks" in the dining hall message when you get the food. :) [ Wednesday, March 01, 2006 16:10: Message edited by: Left Outer Join ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. -- The current table gets overwritten in the next update anyway; I can screw around with it. Due to a very stupid mistake I made today, all accounts were Arancaytar for a time. It was funny. As for scientific integrity... well, I do announce my manual manipulations. You can rest assured that this is the only one I've made intentionally and not for the purpose of fixing corrupted data. ;) Edit: That, on the other hand, was nice. :) [ Thursday, March 02, 2006 21:14: Message edited by: Left Outer Join ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Just started playing and don't want to start a new topic for this. Mayor Shylocke tells me I get an "alchemical explosion". I haven't played far enough yet to find out whether she actually means explosion or explosive. But I'm finding the former hard to imagine. "Here. This should be useful." *BOOOOM* -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. quote:Total Traffic for the month of February: 1.3 GB Traffic limit: 40.0 GB There's a lot of room left for sucking up. Er. You know what I mean anyway. --- Edit: In response to your AIM (who knows when we'll both be online again?): 1. As I said, there is no rational limit on bandwidth, and a limit you are unlikely to get close to on diskspace. Feel free to switch to another free host, but be aware that it might have stricter limits on both - though I see you've found one that at least doesn't use ads. :) 2. I do have extremely old chatlogs, but none that are not private conversations. There were no publically organized chat sessions in the time I have been here until recently. I might have about 10-20 lines saved of an old spiderweb chat I popped into two years ago after Drakey invited me. Can't find it right now, but I doubt it's interesting. quote:Indeed, but coming up with a good plot is more effort, so if the customers don't care either way, he might just as well make it suck. Except that those people who really don't care about plot ought to care about graphics instead, and there's not much of that in SW games... -- But then, how do we explain the, uh, attention-span-challenged newbies that arrive whenever a new game is released? Surely there is something about these games that attracts them, and it is neither quality of plot nor of graphics. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Since I have posted in this topic, my vote count has gone up by 1, and my weighted average has increased from 4.13 to 4.14. I conclude that I have received a five-start vote. Now, I don't suggest a causal relationship.
