Well, an hour is more than plenty. For the maps, I don't need help as such, just information on where you would place your faction (since this is Upper Exile and you apparently control most of it, it's not critical). :) -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I'll be home at 15:00 GMT today, I hope. If those with AIM could go to spidweb around that time, it will be a lot easier to coordinate the map - especially since I can upload interim versions and can take input on changes immediately. Spring: No problem, but your territory is quite close to Prem's. Any closer, and you'll have to make contact soon. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. OOC: If there are no objections, I will put a faction overlay on Alec's new map this afternoon. Meanwhile, it would be good to hear more comments on what should be changed from the first map. Anyway, what's done is done. The current position isn't problematic, really, and you can still wander around the mountains quite a ways. It would be stupid to build a library immediately facing the coast when a single ship with a good fire cannon (say, of the Anama church) could wipe out the entire complex... --- Premonition: Is Mareike passing by the river near the Jsoulza, or one of the rivers through the inland sea? it would make little difference, I suppose, but I'll be able to scry her earlier if she is travelling closer to the mainland. Slartucker: From your post, I gathered the goblins are sending out spies. I had one of my patrols try to capture one, though whether they succeeded or not (or whether it was, in fact, a squirrel) is another matter. "The entire village?" the head librarian still looked incredulous. Tarsin felt pity for the old man. He's never seen bloodshed in person, only read about it. Tarsin himself was no such bookworm; he had undertaken long journeys before on Keeper missions and was no stranger to combat. "A single survivor, the reports go. The innkeeper managed to get herself to safety, fled south across the river to Dorngas. She spoke of scenes of carnage - men, women, children slaughtered. The battle lasted only an hour; the town was razed methodically. "The nephilim planned their attack with exceeding precision, master." "With our assistance." Alfgar said voicelessly, his face slightly pale. "Indeed, and they have not forgotten." Tarsin produced a bundle wrapped in cloth and bound with string, and began to unwrap it. "They sent this; I picked it up from the entrance hall when I returned this morning." The string came undone, the cloth parting to reveal a leatherbound tome, which he placed on the desk. Alfgar bent forward to read the ancient lettering. "Of the Empyre from Beyonde the See and Theyre Arryval. The Annexation of Pralgad?" he looked stunned. "I had no idea there were surviving records..." "Possibly the only one on the continent, master. Surely one of less than five in the world." "And this is from the Library of Moon." It was less a question than a sigh. "Why, if I'd known they had---" "If you'll allow, master, I doubt they would have granted you access." There were many unspoken things in his face and his words. The Moon librarians were never on friendly terms with us was one of them. And now they are dead, thanks to us was another thing Alfgar didn't answer. Aloud, he commented, more to himself, "there appears to be blood on the cover." "It is but a tiny stain, master", Tarsin said, taking the remark literally. "We will be able to clean it easily." The magister turned and left the study, leaving Alfgar alone with his bloodied spoil of war. --- "Anything unusual, sir?" The archer turned to the mage, who had stopped quite suddenly. The mage raised his hand to command silence. Falko obeyed, mildly surprised. It was the last day of their patrol through the northern hills; nothing interesting had happened in the last week. Then, the mage bent over as if to survey the ground, plucking an ordinary-looking tuft of grass and placing it in his pocket. He walked on, and Falko hastened to follow. "A patch of evergrey. Hard to find in these parts; I'll have to pass on this location to the alchemists," Orson said. In Falko's head, the mage's telepathic voice sounded differently. I heard something. We are being followed; behave normally or you will alert them to our awareness. Without missing a beat, the archer asked, curiously, "what is it used for?" "Evergrey is a powerful disinfectant. Cures many diseases and clean the nastiest wounds. Almost as valuable as graymould." Orson fell silent. Talking too much was as conspicuous as suddenly falling silent. Wordlessly, the mage closed his eyes, concentrating. Falko noticed it out of the corner of her eyes, but knew better than to react. Orson muttered a formula under his breath, raising his right hand to see green trails of energy running across it. In a single fast movement, Orson whipped his arm and head around, gesturing at a scrub behind them and to the right. A limegreen bolt of energy shot towards the foliage and vanished; Falko recognized the characteristic sound of a Forcecage spell. "Well," said the mage, suddenly grinning as he walked over to the bush and gestured for Falko to follow, "let us see what we caught." --- [ooc: They may have just nabbed a goblin spy. Or they may not. Your call, Slarty.] [ooc: Prem, I'd react to Mareike's mission, but it seems a bit early. I will probably be able to scry her ship shortly after it leaves the coast.] [ Sunday, March 26, 2006 21:09: Message edited by: The Threadless Thread ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I came up with Arancaytar probably around 2001 or so. The name for my heroic alter ego (13 years old, you know how it is). In 2003, I needed an online name for a forum, and I used it. Then, I signed up an email address with that name as well (up to then I'd always used my real name), and some time later I used this name to sign up on Spiderweb. It's been my online handle ever since. At the time, it didn't mean anything. In the meantime, I've found it means "first wanderer" in a language I made up later, "agitated room ripple jewel" in Novah, "walking mountain village" in yet another fantasy lingo and "king who lies (as in lying down, not telling lies)" in Quenya. It is also uncomfortably close to "Aaron Carter", whoever that is. Be assured that all of these things are coincidental. "The Threadless Thread" is obviously a reference to the collection of Zen Koans by the monk Mumon, ie "The Gateless Gate". If someone finds their way to one of the old Geneforge forums, they will understand why I took it, too. :P -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. In fact, a lot of people are disputing the maps. Alec is drawing up another version. If he wins whatever three-way tussle this is going to mean with TM and Drakey, I'll redo the thing for his map. For now, the current RP resources. - Faction roll - Surface map - Avernum map Some regular summaries would be nice to have here as well. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Ook: The map was supposed to be vague too. You can't draw vagueness, however. I'd thought about making Ephesos DoK to avoid confusion. I'll change it. I was never at the north end of the mountains. I had intended to be at the southeastern end originally, but Prem's directions made more sense if it was at the western foot, and since I hadn't specified it before there was no harm in adjusting. I'm definitely south of you, Slarty, and north of Thralni. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. OOC: I've used Silver's Avernum map and Drakey's Ermarian map to make a rough outline showing where everyone is and what territories they control. Note that territorial sizes are mostly guesses, and that the size also does not indicate actual power (as in, how thinly forces are stretched). Also note that this took the better part of three hours to make, and I probably won't be able to update it more often than once in 3-4 pages. http://stuff.ermarian.net/arancaytar/roleplay/avernum_rp2/avernum1.png http://stuff.ermarian.net/arancaytar/roleplay/avernum_rp2/surface1.png I also propose that from now on, we give precise dates for our posts at the start of every IC, to avoid what happened in the last roleplay. Namely, the stretching of time and space to its limits and the ridicule of all laws of chronology. OOC: If previous RPs are any indication, we'll be all in the same scenes before long. Also, I think it might be a good idea to put together a rough map of Ermarian according to the positions and sizes outlined by Alec. This would then be marked by the different factions. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Our world has tasted chaos before. The fall of the first empire, the ruthless expansion of the second, the cavern wars and the retribution of the Vahnatai. Through all these disasters, all times of turmoil, civilization has endured because there were those that would guard the old knowledge, keep records of the times, and write down the history that others forge. Such is the task that we have set ourselves. "...was crowned Emperor Ironclad II on the ninth of Radiane 219 IE, bringing the first Pralgadian War of Succession to an end." "Lieutenant Skorgere reporting, Master." Master Alfgar looked up from the book he had been reading to survey the man who had just entered his study. He frowned. "The custom of knocking is believed to have been introduced to human culture in the early Aizoan Mesolithic age, when the invention of ranged weapons and rudimentary magic made it prudent to indicate one was not entering a home with hostile intent," he lectured the intruder testily. "The intervening time should have been long enough to make it universal, but alas..." The man looked confused; he was obviously new to the Alfgar's antics. He soon recovered, however. "My apologies Master Alfgar. I come with a message from Magus Orson of the northern forces. The scouts report that goblin activity has increased dramatically. Their efforts appear to be directed chiefly toward the Pralgadian mainland, but caution dictates we ready ourselves for a possible assault." "The goblins have never had much use for magical knowledge, but then they are known to kill humans on sight. They will not try to conquer our knowledge, but they may try to attack us in passing if it is convenient. "Strengthen the northern fortifications. If necessary, draw off forces from the southern area. The nephilim are closer, but we have a truce for now." "Sir?" The soldier looked doubtful. "Can the Nephilim be trusted?" "No further than most in these tumultous times, but I'll take my chances with them over the blood-frenzied goblins and the human imperialists any day. Thank you, Lieutenant. You are dismissed." Skorgere turned to leave, but then remembered something. "I also met Magister Tarsin in the lower halls; he said to tell you that the translations for the Ratbane Project are nearly finished, and that you'd understand." "I do, indeed. This is excellent news, lieutenant." Alfgar smiled as the soldier left. The history of the ancient nephilim clan had been completely obscured until a shaman of the southern Fâhif had lent his aid; his proficiency with the ancient dialects had been the key to unlocking the previously unreadable archives. In return, the Nephilim had been granted access to several magical tomes as well as a detailed historical map* that was hard to come by these days. The times made for strange alliances, and friends in unexpected places, but Alfgar was ready to do what was necessary to increase the library and protect its contents. (OOC: *Heh) ====== Faction: The Keepers of Memory Faction Leader: Grand Librarian and Archivist Alfgar Location: Southern end of the Ndovlu mountains, Northern Valorim. Description: In some form, the historians' guild has existed since shortly before the Anama War. Playing no or merely an unimportant role in world events, they have been mostly ignored by non-scholars, until the founders of Redmark college began their encyclopedic efforts in 843 IE. In the course of their cooperation, the guild expanded their field to include the collection of magical and other non-historical knowledge. The latter has given them power and influence on the scale of other magery schools, even though most of the scholars are no mages themselves. Unfortunately, the knowledge and power they hoard has made them an attractive target, and they have been forced to build up additional fortifications and defenses, mercenaries and permanently employed soldiers. They are not aligned politically; their only motivation is the protection of their records and the gathering and production of new ones. However, in these troubled times, they may well have to take a more active role to ensure their survival... -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. A banner is any kind of graphic for advertising a website. The most common one is 468 x 60 pixels large, like this one I made for the Encyclopedia site some years back (I know it sucks, this was one of my first efforts with Photoshop...): There are countless other sizes though... [ Friday, March 24, 2006 09:36: Message edited by: The Threadless Thread ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I would say I refuse to defend Geneforge, but that's a tacky line and should be reserved for Avernum 4. The question is whether the mod board, being inaccessible, is vulnerable to attack. Another question is whether the two old Geneforge boards (GF1 and GF2), being hidden - unless you know they are there - would make a good refuge for Spiderwebbers. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Actually, if you compare Spiderweb to water, then both Thralni and Kel would cause quite a ruckus in their pure states. Neither of them are particularly explosive however, so that comparison doesn't really work. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I came up with iridium. I am highly resistant to corrosion, unbelievably dense, non-toxic when I'm on my own but extremely toxic when bonded in a group. Oh, and people blame me for killing the dinosaurs. Einsteinium sounds cool, but almost as pretentious as the above "Gold" claim. On second thought, Osmium. Even more dense, but on occasion very bright, used for all kinds of things, but very toxic, and if I forget to shower even for a single day, you really don't want to know what I smell like.
