I'm not usually this anal retentive, Thralni, but I noticed you consistently spell "spy" wrong. A spy spies. To spy, or to be spying, is what spies do. I fixed the thing so that it now validates as an RSS feed (there were some problems before). Google sometimes takes a while before the feed is updated - any web aggregator does. Also, I don't know any service that sends you email updates for any RSS feed you enter - FeedBlitz does, but only once a day, which is extremely slow for Spiderweb. But Thunderbird, Firefox and Opera can all parse a feed. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. You cannot. UBB doesn't have this feature. However, I made an rss feed once that allows you to see the latest replies on a certain forum or topic. You can put it into any feed aggregator (http://reader.google.com and http://www.bloglines.com are two good ones; Opera and Firefox have built-in tools for this) and receive notifications whenever new things are posted. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. @Spring: There is no way that anyone would refer to any other group as a "faction" in character, just as you would not address a letter in an character-based RP to "the character known as Melora". The factions are out of character definitions. Your people have been living north of the Kaz cult for the past years if not decades. You know they're a religious order, and if you paid any attention to regional politics, you know the names of its leaders. If you have reasonably good informants, you even know its tenets and values, and would be able to phrase a much more convincing alliance offer... ---- On the other hand, I'd vote to award Sarachim for the "ic post of the month". "The perfectly harmless circus", indeed. Pratchett couldn't have done better. :P Edit: Share the prize with Alec... quote:Indeed - now, it makes most sense for it to be within the crag. At its founding, the valley had only recently been cleared of troglodytes and ursagi - not the most attractive place. We can assume that a new campus was built in the crag later in the 9th century - perhaps around 40-50 years later - as the college grew. On that note, I would like to remind that this is three hundred years after Avernum 3. People have moved. Towns have been destroyed, towns have been built, towns have grown and decayed. Sharimik might be a ghost town. Moon could have evolved to the next province capital of Midori. For example, Ernest is long dead. His hut has either been long destroyed, looted or simply collapsed. Picture our world in 1700. That's how similar Ermarian in 1135 is to 833 IE. I'm not saying they've invented computers in the meantime, but things have moved around a bit. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. | I have a love of woodwind instruments. Faction: The Keepers of Memory Notable Characters: Master Alfgar: Leader of the keepers and bearer of the grandiose title "Grand Librarian and Archivist". Alfgar has just passed 60 years, quite old for a human without magical abilities. With a portly, even beefy stature and red hair that is only beginning to be tinged with grey at the edges, he might look like a merchant more than a librarian - but don't let that fool you. If there is someone more knowledgable about history, then it can only be a dragon. Alfgar is driven by an idealism that can only be afforded by people at the top of reclusive, non-competing organizations. He believes that the purpose of the Keepers is to better the world through their wisdom, and to keep it in balance. Many of the more controversial decisions - such as dealing with the Nephilim warriors - are made without his input, or in spite of his concerns. Magister Tarsin: One of Alfgar's advisors, Tarsin has a much less idealist view of the world. His loyalty is to the library and its books alone. It would be too much to say he would sell his grandmother for a complete history of Dragonkind, but he would probably try to haggle for a better offer. Tarsin is one of the more traveled of the library's ranking members. Frequently tasked with the acquisition of new records, it was also he who initiated contact with the Fahif. Somewhat younger than Alfgar, Tarsin stands a good chance of succeeding him when he resigns - leadership of the faction is neither life-long nor hereditary - but he has little ambitions for the position, knowing the taxing responsibilities that are hardly outweighed by the power. Lieutenant Skorgere: A common soldier in the pay of the Keepers. In spite of his mercenary status, he has been in the library's service for many years. Magus Orson: The commander of the northern defenses, Orson is possibly the most powerful wizard the Keepers have. In spite of their extensive archive of magical knowledge, this does not say a lot. His specialties are magical communication and scrying, which has allowed the library to gain better intelligence than ever. Like most mages at the library, he is primarily a researcher, not a battlemage. His knowledge is extensive, but his combat abilities are just passable. Falko: A mercenary archer. Contacts: Fahif Nephilmerhas Fianas: Magister Tarsin met with the group in an attempt to find information on nephilim culture. What he found instead was far better: One of the elder shamans turned out to be proficient in a nephilim dialect long thought to be extinct. In exchange for certain information and assistance, Tarsin was able to gain the shaman's aid in translating a history of the Ratbane clan. Tarsin has gained a better standing with the nephilim than he is aware, and far better than he hope to when he introduced himself to them as "a seeker of knowledge". The Goblin Goblins: Less a "contact" than the Keepers' awareness of the growing activity of the nearby goblin tribe, this relation is almost implicitly hostile even though the most harmful contact yet has been Falko punching a drunk goblin to knock him out. The Order of Kaz: Not much of a contact. The keepers have grown aware of a ship passing through the delta, traversing the Jsoulza Gulf and landing at the rocky coast some distance to the north of the citadel; that is all. Presence: The Library Citadel: An imposing building set into the rock face of a canyon near the Wyvern Pass, near the southern end of the Ndovlu Mountains. The building is protected by its location more than anything. Hard to find if you are merely passing through the pass, accessible only by a narrow path leading over many bridges, and overlooking the whole canyon. In terms of defense, the citadel is manned by slightly over a hundred soldiers (mostly mercenaries) and a total of around 300 people in total, including loremasters and other staff. Wyvernton: A small village at the entrance to the Wyvern Pass, the village is not actually controlled by the keepers, but is its chief trading partner and food supplier. The library has a permanent liaison who also acts as the town sage. The Northern Passes: Not a settlement at all, but a strategical passage through the mountains lying north of the citadel, which is regularly patrolled. Posts: #1: Introduction. Northern defenses strengthened. Deal with Nephilim. #2: Alfgar receives a book from Moon. Orson and Falko patrol the northern passes, capture a goblin. #3: Interrogation of the goblin. Alfgar receives a report notifying him of the Kaz ship that is approaching. #4: Orson and Falko arrive at the citadel. #5: night. the goblins arrive. When I mentioned "summaries" I actually meant a single summary that would be updated as necessary, along with the map. But this way works too. -- Dintiradan: Actually, Redmark College was founded south of the valley exit, slightly northwest of Stormport. But I guess it might have resettled in the last 300 years, especially given its campus has likely expanded along with the city that originally surrounded it. Anyway, changes made. Pralgad & Valorim (accurate from page 8 on). Changes: - added Redmark College, Gidrik - added Looter attacks (on Krizsan, Sharimik, Gidrik) - adjusted Dominion territory - adjusted Bordrao force in Jazen Gulf and Goblin force in Delta (from now on, force presence will be marked with a smaller dot showing the size of the force. An awesome sight to behold. The whole building was set with its back to the rock face, a lone tower on top of the citadel, overlooking the canyon. A narrow path wound up along the mountain side, passing over numerous small bridges where crevices in the craggy rock broke the path, and a long narrow bridge right across the canyon. A fortress could not have been better protected, nor more reclusive. - The traveler Daryl Mycroft, on arriving at the Keepers' halls for the first time. Falko grew calmer at the sight of the tower's beacons shining in the night. They had walked most of the afternoon to get back from the northern passes, looking over the shoulders the whole time expecting a goblin charge at any moment. These critters do not travel alone. She had rarely been more relieved to walk across the bridge and remember the defenses that protected the library from threats: The greedy adventurer seeking magic, the tyrannous emperor expunging the ancient records. "It is but a matter of time till we are overrun," Orson darkly commented as if reading her mind. "Humans would break on this place like waves on a cliff, but the advance of the goblins is unwavering. Our only hope is that they will pass us by to concentrate their attacks on the lands south of here." "Not if they know the value of magic," Falko reminded him. The words of the unconscious goblin over her shoulder - we kill wif iron, we kill wif magic - still haunted her. Goblins talking? Goblins practicing magic? It was all wrong! Gobrak stirred slightly, but did not speak. orson had been right - he was in an advanced state of stupor; Falko had not needed to punch him again. As they entered the front gate, their captive drew the gaze of dozens of curious guardsmen. It is not exactly common that we take prisoners here, she remembered. It was not exactly common that so many patrols were sent to guard the northern passes, either. Tension was in the air, the calm before a storm. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. A pitiful substitute for his key role in E3. With slime pools ceasing to be terrain vulnerable only to Fireball, Jordan Bojar lost all his game significance. Edit: Except for letting you find out the location of the slime pit. But the Fireball thing is gone. Haha. I play devil's advocate and now oppose the position I took half a year ago. I should go into politics. In MoS, I said the same - "please, slow down, people". We will slow down soon enough - sooner than we want to, in fact. A better idea: Line-by-line summary in the OOC thread. It saved me when I had about 5 pages to catch up with in MoS. The sooner we start the summary, the less we have to catch up. This summary will make it very easy to get the gist of the story if you get disoriented. --- Also, since this is a faction RP, take advantage of the minus character and divide your post into different scenes, like this. --- Less clutter. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. It's good form to allow for gaps and loopholes. I scry and scout the surrounding area almost all the time, but if I notice that Slarty is trying to bypass my guards, I'll let him - it makes it more interesting. Perhaps my scrying pool doesn't work properly. Perhaps I'm looking elsewhere right now. Perhaps the scrying mage is taking a leak. In return, I'd expect he doesn't raze my library to the ground. Basically, we open loopholes for the others so they will do the same for us. If we spent time trying to close the loopholes, we'd all be munchkining in no time, topping each other with "unblockable scrying spells" and "unscryable invisibility spells" and "universal anti-magic fields" and "universal anti-anti-anti-anti-magic spells". And so on. So, I'd just try to enter the area, and if it's important, ask him in ooc if he'll allow you past his scrying spell. A good policy is to make up no more than one kind of magical gimmic per post, and have it bring you only half-way to what you are trying to accomplish. I broke that in my post where I captured the goblin (telepathy *and* forcecage), but I'll avoid too many thingamajigs from now on. It's vital to note that to be overpowered, magic doesn't have to be the munchkin, apocalyptic world-rending type. It's enough to have a lot of little things that miraculously ease your path. That said, Thralni, I do think invisibility is over the top. You don't need it. Nephilim are stealthy as all hell; you can sneak while visible, and it makes it far more stylish to avoid being seen. Remember, you're not playing for the win. If you are discovered, that just makes it even more suspenseful. When people complain about other players overpowering, this is not because it is "cheating". You can't win this game, thus you can't cheat. They complain because it makes the story boring. ------------------------------------------- Milla, where are you exactly? I'll do one more change on the map today to fix your position, after that it will be a week before the next update. Count the slain foe once, but the captured foe yet a hundred times more, for what knowledge you can wrest from him can win and lose battles. Count your own dead once, but the escaped spy a thousand times, for what knowledge he gained can mean your defeat. --- On War, by Lennard Gorzan. --- Falko followed the mage as he purposefully walked back to the shrub that he had just fired the forcecage spell into. A low grumbling was heard, and sounds of struggling. Orson quickened his step. The spell won't hold long. The foliage parted easily to reveal a green creature about half their length, tightly bound with glowing ropes of green light. Falko suppressed a chuckle. Goblins! Goblins were not a threat. Serious adventurers hardly even bothered with the pesky creatures. They were dangerous only to inexperienced rookies, and then only in numbers. A glare from Orson told otherwise. As if in response to her unspoken comment, he spoke. "They have multiplied beyond numbers in those pits up north. They have grown strong and bold, some even report they have grown intelligent. The goblins here are a serious threat." Gesturing for the archer to lend a hand, he moved to lift the captive out of the bush. ------- "Shmite you wewill, huminy-humans. Bind Gobrak loosh, yesh, orwe'll eat you, eat you dead!" "The reports seem to be exaggerated, commander." Falko sighed. The goblin was proving talkative indeed, but not very eloquent, and hardly able to converse. "I would not rush to conclusions," the mage commented. "Intelligence can be inhibited." The goblin made a loud *hick*. Orson grinned. "By drink, for example." "You believe he is intoxicated?" As if to stress the point, the goblin burped and launched into a muttered ramble that they could not understand. One word caught their attention, however. "Magic?" The goblin strained against his ropes. "We kill you wif iron, we kill you wif magic, we aren't dumb now, we'll sh-show you." "Clearly not that exaggerated. Falko, we need to bring him back to the halls somehow. We don't have time for more extended questioning here, and we certainly can't afford to let him return to his forces for now." "Fine, but we're not dealing with his babbling all the way back." the archer looked the goblin over with a calculating gaze, then rapidly punched him between the eyes. The goblin went still. She sighed as she slung the unconscious creature over her shoulder. It would be a long way back to the halls. -------- Alfgar opened the next letter, breaking the sealing charm on it and expecting nothing but the same kind of reports that were now arriving from all directions at once. Armies mobilizing, marching for war, distant battles. "Ship under flag of Kaz entered Delta two days ago, on way to open sea." He frowned in confusion. Fleets were moving everywhere these days, but what was a single ship doing on its own? Time to deal with that later, he decided. OOC: Apologies for stepping on toes. I'm awfully tired and should be sleeping as of 2 hours ago. Will fix errors if necessary tomorrow.
