Presence or absence? Or maybe it depends on whether or not you are a mod of General.

Don't listen to their lies perpetrating the current system, arghhhhhhhhh! Let us take up arms and overthrow the oppressive Moderator class! CITIZENS OF EXILE, UNITE!

(Hey, someone has to take up the slack now that TM's gone...)

the Reflexive Rule of Authority in Private Groups applies here as well as it does to most other forums, chat systems, MMORPGs, etc:

"If you ask to have authority, you're not going to get it."

And it's corollary:

"If you feel a need to ask for authority, you were never in line to get it."

Darn it, I just had a long and drawn out, in depth, and absolutely true answer to all your questions, arghhhhhh, but when I clicked the post button, it told me I had too many images in my post (smilies?) and to click the back button, where it promptly erased everything I had written. No!!!!!!

But anyway, in short, you must make it to the top of both the administrator and Spiderweb communities list to become a moderator when such a rare opportunity shows itself. Tough task.

Oh, and creating your own forum is easy here or here. Getting members to join and post on a regular basis is the hard part.

The novelty of a new forum without lots of members does wear off.Look at CSM look at RIFQ.

I guess that explains Misc's mods :P

That was quite the exception. There were secret cabals, elections, and backroom dealings.

An admin has complete control.A mod just has powers to punish us and no offense ,but the odds of you becoming a mod even for a day are quite unlikely my friend.

Actually, the cruelest would be to appoint a Moderator of the Day, but announce it the following day. That does assume that most people don't repeatedly check the Mod Room to see if they can get in.

Nice going Salmon, now you're going to have all the newbies trying to get in the mod board all day.
Edit: as a matter of fact, if it stops them from spamming...

I suppose you can help speed up the "passing on" bit, but I'd warn you that Spiderweb mods, as a rule, are tough as nails, are bred to survive, and are proficient in various martial arts. :P

--

They are also people who start topics only when they make sense, who keep their calm in the midst of flamewars, whose powers of spelling and grammar is beyond part, and whom you would implicitly trust even if you dislike them. Based on this, I really have my doubts you'd fit in the group.

There are also occasional mod elections. Occasional might be the wrong word, since there have been a total of two in the history of this board. On another note, Kelandon had a proposal for the next mod elections last year.

That proposal is astoundingly weird. Not bad, necessarily, but really weird. Why sift the votes around like that from one candidate to the next?

The point of it is so that if someone votes for an unpopular candidate, they're not wasting their vote, since the vote will just go on to whoever that candidate prefers rather than being thrown away.

You, Sir, are not alone. His work has been found to be highly amusing and was indeed the inspiration for my first true signature. Wonderful advice, and from an expert in the subject.

The proposal is weird because it was an attempt to create a vaguely fair voting system that would have just the right level of chaos, not too much, not too little. It's a revision of Alec's rather bad rules for the last General mod election, which is another contributing factor to the weirdness.
