On Windows, it's shift-click to split up a stack of items. I don't know about Mac, but I'd imagine something similar.

In A3 there was a vampire called Vahkohs whom you were invited to challenge and kill.

Maybe, when you killed him in A3 he wasn't really dead.

Maybe, you did kill him in A3 but then he got out of the shower and it turned out it was all a dream.

Maybe, Jeff forgot he was dead and brought him back to life by mistake.

Maybe, the "official" ending to A3 is that you refused Vahkoh's challenge and didn't kill him.

Maybe, it is the reincarnation of Vahkohs who has been born again.

Maybe, Vahkohs's spirit has possessed someone else's body.

Maybe, the vampire in DWTD isn't the same one but has the same name, either because of a coincidence or because he was named for the original Vahkohs.

No guarantees, but I vaguely remember there might be reasons to visit these places:

Slime pit; Agate Tower; Ghikra (by boat); Gorvifal's Crypt(?); House on the Hill; Shayder; Tomb of Vahkohs.

In A3, you can get a bit of free food in Fort Emergence. Fairly cheap food can be bought from one of the outdoors farms near Krizsan/Silvar.

The continuum hypothesis is accepted as an axiom by some, but not by others. I voted "false" on question 3, because in my view CH (and even more so the Generalised Continuum Hypothesis: GCH) unnecessarily restricts the size of the universe. Some results that I like (and many beautiful counter-examples) occur if you postulate Proper Forcing Axiom (PFA) or MA+¬CH.

Forcing, by the way, is a fascinating methodology of taking a universe (=everything) and making it bigger (ie adding some new things that weren't included in everything). I recommend a book called "Set Theory" by Kenneth Kunen. However, that book is quite challenging.

Highly alert the character trait doesn't prevent you from being slowed, but hyperactivity the spell does reverse slowing on your whole party.

You'll lose haste. When I play as Anama, that's the one I really miss.

(NB hyperactivity can unslow your party, so all you lose is the ability to make yourself faster than normal).

Oh yeah, and the tower of Zkal is a bit annoying without fire barrier.

On the subject of capitalisation, I think we should capitalise whenever the word 'vahnatai' is used as a noun "the Vahnatai are unhappy because their crystal souls were stolen", but drop the capital when the word is used as an adjective "you have learned more about the vahnatai language".

Changing the subject:
Thralnai, it was a joke. The graemlin was a clue.

I'm not sure if anyone would be able to certainly identify Mozart's actual head, since he was buried in a multiple occupancy grave. I mean, there were no dental records in those days, and I don't suppose there is any DNA to match against?

The point about VM is we're talking multitasking operating systems. Having more memory (even virtual memory), you can run more processes at once. So jobs are finished quicker, i.e. your computer runs quicker. But only up to a point.

Kel, this is idiotic. It's implicit that when you say something it's your own opinion. If you keep saying "in my opinion" all over the place it's just noise.

It's a matter of balance: up to a certain point, Virtual Memory makes the computer run faster because it effectively doubles your RAM, giving much quicker access to data. However, when your system RAM is low compared to your requirements, too much VM is required and you're constantly swapping RAM for disk space, which is slow.

Yup, and there's evidence that they have the item before they die: they're able to use their stuff if it's arrows, a potion a or scroll.

That doesn't actually disagree with many here. I agree — I just think the overall experience suffers when the plot is bad. The gameplay is virtually always the strongest point in a SW game, but Jeff has made a few good plots before, and I'd like to see him do so again. I'd rather have good gameplay and a good plot than just good gameplay.

Well I'm glad to hear you say that and don't disagree at all. I'm sure a better plot would enhance the game[*]. But when I posted, I had just read the entire thread of 110 posts, of which I count 39 were commenting on the perceived plot (overwhelmingly, in the negative). While I may have been wrong to disagree with "almost everybody's comments" there was a dominant theme in the views expressed, to which I was responding.

*Having said this, many of my favourite games have absolutely no plot whatsoever.

Yeah, you should be grateful that items ever stay where they are. In Exile all dropped items automatically disappeared as soon as you left town (except in the storage rooms) so you had to prioritise which items to take and sell and which items to be abandoned.

In Avernum 2 you can still store items in the designated storage rooms (Olgai, Silvar, Castle). That's the only safe place to leave your stuff.

Well I'm looking forward to Avernum 4 (even if, to judge by this forum, I'm almost the only one). My principal fear about A4 was that it would introduce the GF combat mode - with its unpredictable grid and weird action point rules. Based on the comments by drakefyre and *i, I'm hopeful that A4 will avoid these drawbacks. So I give A4 an unqualified welcome.

You know, I disagree with almost everybody's comments above. For me it's the gameplay, not the plot, that makes SW games so good. For example the replayability - this is because of the gameplay and atmosphere - on the second/third/nth time round you already know the plot, but you still want to play.

To be perfectly honest the plot of Exile/Avernum/Nethergate leaves me cold anyway, and is even off-putting (spells? goblins? magic ravens? give me a break!). The plot of Geneforge was sort of interesting because it's quasi-scientific and linked to current issues, but on its own it wouldn't make me play the game. But the actual playing of the game is fun, so the plot really doesn't matter. As far as I'm concerned the only function of the plot is to get you in position to try new challenges. Pretty much the only thing the plot could do to spoil things would be not playing "fair". For example just killing you pointlessly or arbitrarily taking away your stats. Jeff obviously understands this because his games are scrupulously "fair". And that's all I ask.

Apparently no one else here agrees, but that's my ha'p'orth (or 2 cents' worth, if you will).

I keep falling down the stairs: there's no carpet just smooth painted wood, and without shoes on it gets hazardous. Inability to correctly use a staircase is embarrassing, if there's someone else around at the time.

Even more embarrassing is getting locked out of my house, because then I have to ask our neighbours next door if I can walk through their house, climb over the fence into our yard and get in to the house through the backdoor.
