Definitely not working; I do have Metal Lumps, and I have been to Carmine to check if he'll take them or not, and he won't. The conversation option doesn't even show up. Bug? :(

I found one at an outdoor junk shop... It just always seemed a bit of an odd choice to make you require. I'm sure they were more common in Exile, right?!

Trying to get the L3 spell from northeastern valorim that you need a horn to get; where does one find a horn? They're hardly commonplace items. It seems like an odd thing for you to require...

I think the main difference is that there are now only finite "supplies" of roaches and golems left... and also, I thought destroying the golem factory made all the rest of the golems defunct; is that just wrong? :-\

Why can't I buy another sword from Carmine? I remember in Exile 3 buying at least two, and there's the opportunity to get a third if you don't get Beastslayer from Sulfras. In Avernum 3 he lets me buy one but the next time I come back to him the option to get another isn't there any more. Is this a bug? :-\

As for major news, eh. Nothing big. Members come and go. Games get released. The usual.

no, sorry!

Well, good to know somebody remembers the name, anyway. Didn't expect much. I've changed it because I go by finlay on other parts of t'internet, and it's my first name.

Anyway... what's the "social scene" like here? Worth staying around in a non-lurker state for? Who is everybody, anyway? I remember a lot of the "bigger" names, like the ones who create loads of scenarios and have enormous post-counts, but anyway... Who's cool, who's not cool, who's good, who's evil, who likes marmalade, who's old, who's young, who's wise, who posts too much, who's gay, who's loud, who's quiet, who's got a mental disorder, who's crazy, who's stupid, who's childish, who's simply worth mentioning? Just wondering! ;)

Hey spiderweb people. I was idling around on the internet and decided that coming back and maybe playing some of the games over the summer might be a good idea, since i've been bored lately. You may remember me under the older pseudonyms of ørangutan, or Jelly. You may well not. I don't really care; I probably won't be much of a presence here anyway, like I ever really was. But all's good.

Can somebody catch me up on any major news over the past year or so, or however long it's been since I've last been here (it's probably less than a year, but I genuinely can't remember)? I still haven't played Avernum 4... maybe I should try that out. Something to do! Hooray! :D

Only time I ever used it (in the Avernum series) was to fix an accidental click. When I played Exile I used it all the time, though, because I was younger.

How do we pronounce... in General

One important technique is to scan the ancient literature for references to the funny accents of foreigners/yokels/idiots etc. Such comments often have implications for how things were supposed to be pronounced. Maybe Kelandon can tell us more about how this works?)

I don't know as much about this as I should, but apparently the main source is the pronunciation of the Romance languages. There are certain standard sound changes — Grimm's Law, that sort of thing — that one uses to reconstruct how an original language must've sounded from the differing pronunciations of the descendant languages.

Grimm's Law applies to Germanic languages (like English), not Romance. That's what makes there a <p> in Latin <pater> corrseponding to English <f> in <father>, and the <th> matches up with the <t> in those two words as well. You probably knew that, no doubt, but you certainly implied that it was a rule applying to Romance languages.

I don't care how people pronounce my name. If you want to emphasise the <ø> and pronounce it like they do in Scandinavian languages, go right ahead. If you have no idea how that's pronounced, just make it an ordinary o-sound. I don't think there's any point caring since we're never going to meet in person or speak to each other, most likely.
Jelly, however, is of course an English word and should be pronounced thus.
If I ever get around to changing my screenname to "finlay", which is my name and the name I use on other boards, pronounce it with an "ay" sound and not an "ee" sound, please. But again it would never matter unless we met in person, which I have no doubt probably won't.

I have to agree that I hope it won't be like GF, non-turn-based (although GF is more turn-based than it likes to say), although I would be interested to see that.

Why do you like BoE but not BoA? in Blades of Exile
Shock Trooper
Member # 1207

I prefer BoA really, at least atm. I haven't played BoE in a long time though. Having played BoA it's quite difficult to get back into BoE because I'm so used to the 3D-ness and things like that. Sometimes I press 9 instead of 8 to go north, as well, and similarly indeed in the BoA editor with the 2D-ness.
My sister hates BoA, though, cos she's been playing BoE a bit (not as much as me playing A3 and BoA though!). A good point as well; I'm partly so used to it because I recently played through A3 and completed it....
Maybe it's the new feeling of BoA. I do remember finding it sometimes difficult to start a new BoE game, perhaps because there are so many scenarios out there. I don't know. I'm going to shut up now... :D

Is it not just a source of endless experience? Although you do lose reputation in A3, where you didn't in E3. You can't fly in, and I used that secret passage just to farsight it.

My better friends know I'm also very slow on the uptake, and say a lot of stupid things, though. One of my friends said that "for someone who doesn't say a lot, you talk a lot of ####!"

Here (UK) it's:
16 for sex and smoking (and driving a small tractor :P ),
17 for driving,
18 for everything else eg. drinking, voting, etc. Drinking is a bit hazy though because you can buy drinks with a meal at 16 and parents can give 5+ children drinks if they want, iirc.

I'm 17. I need to learn to drive.

noooo! This'll be fixed if I come back later, right?

edit: I found it properly by going through the pink and pretty page link in your sig and then going to http://my.sanbrunocable.com/tomwatts/skills.html which is almost a completely different link.
Funny thing cos I had seen the player faq before, briefly, but didn't notice that it had a special skills section so I sort of didn't consider it when looking for them.... :o oh well...
and that "embarrassed" smilie there doesn't look at all embarrassed.

I notice that the special abilities work very differently to the other Avernums, and there's new ones and stuff like that... anyway, has anyone got a list of all the special abilities (Magery, Quick Strike, Sharpshooter, Gymnastics etc.), what they do and how to get them?
