Alright. I didn't zoom in, so I thought the 2 pixels were one pixel.

Oh man. I can't believe I forgot him. I love Foster's books. The first time i read Tolkien actually was when i was in high school, and i still like him. Of course, talking about high school like it was long ago doesn't work well when I only graduated... wow, exactly 6 months ago

Having accidentally started a similar thread without knowing of this one,I'll try to make it up by making a more detailed post here. I see a lot of mention of R.A. Salvatore, whether good or bad on this topic. I loved The Crystal Shard, but I could never get into any of his other novels. One author I'm surprised to see no mention of on here is Mercedes Lackey. Her Valdemar series makes for very good light fantasy, i think. David Eddings' Belgariad was the first epic fantasy series I ever read, and it will always have a special place in my heart. His newest series, The Dreamers, pretty much sucked though. I like George R.R. Martin, but his predilection towards killing off all the good characters is rather annoying. Terry Goodkind was good for the first half of his first book, but after that, i just couldn't get into him. Terry Brooks had a few good books and a lot of bad ones. The Sword of Shannara was good, if you ignore the blatant plagiarism of Tolkien. Elfstones, First King, and the first half of Ilse Witch were about the only other good titles in the Shannara series. I have to disagree with Alorael on the topic of Donaldson being the only one to successfully pull off an ordinary earthling in a fantasy world plot. I thought Brooks' Landover novels were great light fantasy. Harry Turtledove wrote some great fantasy with his Gerin the Fox books and his Videssos series. A new author that i have become quite fond of is John Marco with his Tyrants and Kings series. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Dragonlance books at all. The older ones by Weiss and Hickman were good, but I think they're all bad now. Of course, no fantasy can be as good as the creative genius of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Sorry. I read back 2 month in the forums and could have sworn that wasn't there. Next time i'll tery to be more thorough before posting a new topic. The Belgariad/Malloreon and Elenium/Tamuli were good, even with overused plot devices. The characterization helped overcome the reused plot. The Redemption of althalus was also very good, but the new series, The Dreamers, I found to be rather bad.

I presume that most people who like fantasy RPGs also like fantasy novels to some extent, so I thought I'd ask what people liked. Some of my favorites are Harry Turtledove, David Eddings (before his newest series), Terry Brooks (specific titles), George R.R. Martin, Mercedes Lackey, John Marco, and of course, J.R.R. Tolkien. How about you?

Which goblin graphic? in The Avernum Trilogy

Personally, I liked the yellow graphic a lot better. I even copied it over for A2, A3, and BoA. If you want to use yellow goblins, it's quite simple. Just copy G1521.bmp from the Data folder of A1 to the Data folders of A2, A3, and BoA. For A3, it has to be renamed 1521.bmp. As for the goblin fighters, you're out of luck. A1 didn't have them. I toyed with the idea of using the goblin warrior graphic from Nethergate, but the Nethergate data files are different from Avernum's.

Where Is The Mayor in The Avernum Trilogy

Not remembering little details such as mayoral locations, I opened up an A2 save file to se if I could find him. Are you sure there is a mayor? I walked all throughout Mertis and didn't find a mayor. I did find "Captain Lyn" of the Avernum army in the prison building in the northeast of the town. Perhaps that's who you're looking for. I'm not sure what quest you're talking about, so more information about that might be helpful.

This is entirely idle curiosity. I can envison how most of the spells in Avernum would work in the real world, but how exactly would Far Sight work? I mean, it's not like people have an automap in real life.

Agreed... just a quick montage of the other champions fighting their dragons would've been awesome. It just felt like a letdown when they skipped straight to Harry. (at least they avoided that with the other challenges)

I seem to remember it being that way in the book though. Harry was in the tent and had no idea what was going on. Ron and Hermione just gave him a very brief overview later. I think the dragon fighting thing was bad though. they definitely didn't fight on the roof of the castle in the book.

That depends where you last saved. If you already went through the main entrance then saved, you're out of luck, but as I said before, you still get experience if he dies, so it's not that big of a deal.

It doesn't really matter that much if Sixus kills himself. He'll burn the documents he ran off with first, and you'll still get experience if you report back to the mayor in Almaria.

As for your other questions, the Onyx Scepter can be gotten in the Lair of Sulfras in the Empire lands to the west of Fort Remote. You'll need blue and red clearance to get there. I don't know about vampires and liches, I always just cast Repel Spirit on both. I think ice drakes are stonger, but i could be wrong. One of the Crystal Souls can be reached from the northwestern Vahnatai Lands. You can get information about it from the rebel Vahnatai fortress in the northeast tunnels of the Vahnatai lands. Go see the Vahnatai council after finding the proof, and they'll tell you what to do. Another Crystal Soul can be found in Angierach, which is also in the Empire-controlled lands to the west of Fort Remote. You'll need to talk to Renatr-Ihrno, the Vahnatai in Egli, to find out how to make Quickfire to get the Crystal Soul in Angierach. The third Crystal Soul is in Pyrog's Lair, which is northwest of the Giant Lands up in Northern Avernum. You'll need the Orb of Thralni and a Gray Pass to get there.

Arrows may be weak, but razordisks totally rock. I hope they still have them in A4.

In Fort Dolthar in A2 (the fort in the middle of the lake northeast of Fort Emerald), there is an area in the northeast that I can see when I cast far sight, but I can't get to it. It seems to have entrances from the outside, but when I try to get there I walk out of the fort. Does anyone know how to get there?

Call me old-fashioned and racist, but my parties are always entirely human. I have one pole weapons fighter with skill in tool use, one ranged waepons specialist (I always try to get the Vahnatai razorblades as soon as I can. Those things rock!) with first aid, a mage with nature/cave lore and a backup specialty in melee weapons, and a priest with arcane lore and potion-making. This party configuration has gotten me through A1, A2, A3, and BoA (not to mention Nethergate) just fine.

I didn't kill anyone in the farie bazaar. They attacked me on site the first time I went there. They said I had the killer's mark on my head or something. I think it's because I killed this one merchant.
