This is Budden, right? Love that graphic-- I can't think of anything else I could have subsituted for the beast. In case you didn't know (since I didn't actually email you asking permission or anything.... :P ) your bloodbeast graphic is used for the 'villain' of Frostbite. By the way, do you have a website or any place where we can see your other graphics (if there are any)? I found the bloodbeast at the graphics contest website, but if you had more that aren't there I'd love to see them. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. That shouldn't happen if you're using a true level 1 singleton. I'm guessing that you somehow altered his level, or had a glut of EXP that hadn't turned into level ups (like when you give tons of EXP in the editor but still remain level 1 until you kill stuff) And I'm surprised nobody found Orrin's Broadsword-- it's quite easy. In a way I feel kind of proud of myself; apparently the "don't backtrack, don't delay" aspect of the scenario was so ingrained that nobody even attempted to backtrack and find it. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Well done. I think it's useful-- hell I actually learned something (didn't know about end_scenario(2)) Should print_big_str_color() be listed, if only to point out that it's broken? -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. I thought that floor_height_pixels worked, but it drew black where the floor originally would have been? It's been a while since I messed with this, but I remember that I eventually abandoned custom floors for it altogether and instead used offset terrains. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. It's broken in my version as well, whatever the version number is for the newest windows. You just have to use string manipulation and regular print_str_color(). It's a pain in the ass, but whatever. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? Posts: 900 | Registered: Monday, August 8 2005 07:00 |

Blades of Exile is free, so that's an obvious place to start if the older graphics and engine don't bother you. There are a lot of amazing scenarios out there, you could spend months just playing the 8+s. BoA is my personal favorite, for obvious reasons, so I highly recommend that as well. However if you're more interested in games actually created by Jeff, I'd go with the avernum trilogy. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? *Raises hand* :P Just to broaden the topic a little, here's a poll I gave to my beta testers. I had been meaning to post it at spiderweb, but hadn't gotten around to it until now for some reason. 1. Have you found Orrin's Broadsword? 2. Have you found the Defender's Blade? 3. Have you brewed a Panacea? 4. Have you eaten raw nightshade? 5. Have you ever become an unstoppable warrior (temporarily)? 6. Have you found alchemy equipment? 7. Have you trained with a highlander? 8. Have you worn rusty armor? 9. Have you discovered the truth about Abominations? 10. Have you finished the scenario with the prefab? -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? I'd never heard of (or experienced) problems with get_sdf. Then again I've never used it or seen anyone else use it. I've used get_flag from the start, pretty much for the reasons Dintiradan just said-- using set_flag and get_sdf is just stupid (Plus for some reason flag seems easier to type than sdf. Which makes no sense since it has an extra character-- maybe it's more natural for me since it's a real word?) -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... You can't skip the fight, but you certainly should rush as fast as possible. When all the goblins are dead, don't leave combat mode to get to the exit. If you do you'll almost certainly run out of time before you get there. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? I think the most likely scenario is that there were reviews for AGB, WTRM, Dilecia and EoR, but Jeff simply didn't put them up. It seems unlikely otherwise that he'd put them in the 'proper' order (by which I mean the order the contest judges and folks at CSR ranked them.) It seems doubtful that he had any reviews of Exodus, since it wasn't even on the tables. Maybe Jeff, having played Bahs and LP and having an idea of the quality of Kel's scenarios, just decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and put Exodus on the quality table. Well Exodus has a 4.0, but it was never even on the Untried and Untested I don't think. Wow, Foul Hordes is indeed as impressive as Smoo promised. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? Posts: 900 | Registered: Monday, August 8 2005 07:00 |

There is a walkthrough for Valley of Dying Things included in the 'Blades of Avernum Manual, Order Form' document that comes with BoA. I'm fairly sure that ENG was the one influenced by Settlers, not TV. Nikki began ENG to prove that it wasn't possible to pull off the 1-day-scenario stunt, but wound up proving just the opposite. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. We're up to about 30 scenarios now, so there are a good number of adventures available. I don't know what you mean by 'full length', if you mean an epic then I suppose Exodus is the only scenario that really fits this category. There are also plenty of scenarios in the 10 - 30 town range that you can get hours of gameplay out of. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? The berries is a bit of a loose end. Originally you had to 'learn' how to gather each ingredient, so this was an important dialog. However, after I got rid of that feature I just left the dialog there to remind the player about herb gathering. You don't actually have to retrieve them to advance the plot (you'll see why soon) but if you aren't gathering ingredients you're going to have a rough time of things. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Stains don't stack in Blades of Avernum Editor | |

Some experiments I did: Firstly, stains indeed don't stack, unless placed in the editor. I'll also point out that the numbers are actually 1-8, not 0-7 (so small blood is 1, not 0) Objects and fields do not have this problem. Objects are numbered as usual, and do stack. Fields are numbered as usual, but they don't appear to stack. The way this is handled is a bit odd-- if there are multiple fields on a spot it isn't the last field placed that remains, but rather BoA figures it out using some kind of heirarchy. Antimagic appears to have the highest rank, but I don't know the heirarchy below that. My verdict-- fields at first appear to be a terrible option because of the odd heirarchy they use, but on second look they might not be so bad. Putting an out of range number for field number doesn't result in an error, and since they don't stack, and aren't meant to stack, you (hopefully) wouldn't have to worry about the stupid binary form problem. Stains are apparently broken. Objects would work, but you'd still have to deal with inputting stuff in binary form, which would suck. Fields look promising, but ideally we'd just get terrain/floor to work. Edit: No wait, stains don't stack. Doh. Edit2: As a matter of fact, they seem to be completely broken. Small blood-large slime work fine (although off by 1 still) but 6 (dried blood) instead places rocks and blood. 7 (bones) works. 8+ does nothing. I would just forget about melee altogether and train in bows. A bow would nicely compliment your spells, and help you kill anything that is immune to magic. Melee is limited because you cannot attack back row enemies (like mages, who, coincidentally, are both the monsters most likely to be resistant to magic and the monsters you need to kill the quickest.) And most importantly, for melee you need to get close to monsters (probably not what your mage is best at) -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. Frostbite: Get It While It's...... Hot? Agree with Alo on both counts-- heroes were fine in WC3, without heroes it was just SC with a lower food limit. But the hero system doesn't really fit in SC, carrier fleets and zergling hordes tend to discourage wasting too much time building up heroes. I'm looking forward to it, Blizzard has yet to do me wrong (Alright, Beyond the Dark Portal was awful but I'll let it slide....) -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. I used to go with two warriors, a warrior/thief and a mage/priest. It was kind of warrior heavy, but warriors can dish out a lot of damage in Avernum, so I never had any problems with it. Archery is another big difference between exile and avernum, it's actually useful in Avernum. I love using archery in BoA, and since it uses the same damage formula in the trilogy it would theoretically be just as useful (although I don't recall if Jeff gives out any good bows in the trilogy) Oh and singletons are always fun. -------------------- Guaranteed to blow your mind. When I heard we'd be playing something other than adventurers in A5, empire soldiers was the first thing I thought of.
