If you're on a Mac you can use Niemand's 3D editor. If you're on windows you're stuck with the regular 3D editor, which is still drastically better than the original. Plus there's Niemand's dialog editor, which is cross platform, and Niemand's averscript editor (If that's out yet. It's only Mac now and I think it's only in beta, but I think somebody was working on one for Windows too. Aran or WKS maybe?) There's Alint for both platforms, although it's command line for windows. Also there's astring (Also for both platforms? Not sure if it's for Mac.) Also there's Graphic adjuster by Niemand-- only for Mac (Starting to notice a trend here? *Shakes fist*)

That's about all the major ones that I can think of.

I think it's an IE issue, because I have the same problem jewels described when I'm using internet explorer but it looks fine when I'm using firefox.

Honestly I don't understand why this is, but both *i and TM say so, and I'm hardly in a position to refute them. Some thoughts on the issue.

It is easier to do simple tasks in BoE than in BoA (At least when you aren't proficient with noding or scripting. Once you are simple tasks are... well simple... regardless of engine.) However doing complex things with BoE is much more convoluted, and sometimes even impossible.

Town design in BoE is much easier. No terrains or heights.

NPC dialog in BoE is somewhat easier. Partly because of string and personality limits, partly because people generally didn't seem to put as much effort into it as is expected in BoA. For some reason BoA merchants need to spill their life stories to fulfill their purpose. BoE merchants sell stuff and send you on your way. (This has more to do with designing trends than the engines)

Apparently it's easier to learn noding than scripting, although I don't really understand why. I guess that huge index of calls is just overwhelming, even if only a select few are really vital.

So it comes down to BoE being the simpler engine. You can't do as much with it, so you aren't expected to do as much with it. You don't need to give every boss a Cool Custom Script, you just throw down a 4-square with some extra HP. You don't have to code the boat chase or special spell system, because it's just not possible. Those things can take hours, and leaving them out saves a lot of time (I still see no reason why a basic BoE scenario would be significantly simpler than a basic BoA scenario though.)

Weird. It's most certainly not a part of the game plot. I think Kneece is too far to fly to, so you need that ferry. Use 'make towns forget you' in the editor to right the problem.

They're the same game for the most part, so the decision really comes down to which engine you prefer. I personally love E3, even though I prefer the avernum engine (mostly nostalgia value I suppose.) If it were E1/2 vs A1/2 I'd say Avernum without hesitating, but the E3/BoE engine, though old, is very smooth and enjoyable.

Oh and Jeff added more content for A3, though I can't think of anything really exceptional, mostly just small errand quests and such. Not a big deal as I recall.

So yeah, pick your engine.

After a while there's not really much point in gold except buying stats and spells, so I'm not sure it'd really be worth the effort.

Actually it appears that he is right. Marianne updated the tables to add Eph's new scenarios, but the actual files for the windows downloads aren't there. Email spidweb to notify her, and in the meantime use Shadow Vale (Iffy's link) or get them from Eph's site.

As for Dilecia, once you've thoroughly searched the library in Smolt, you should return to Tuchin at the Academy for further instructions.

Very true. Then again once you're past the hobgoblins you've kind of wasted your chance to get the full affect from it. If you invest in it from the beginning you can save some healing herbs, but by this point the heavy exhaustion/hypothermia damage you're taking makes first aid measly in comparison. At least it's dirt cheap for the first few levels, so it's good for putting any extra points in.

You can train at campsites and such. As far as what to do with your points, it's up to you. Luck is good since it gives elemental protection as well as the chance to luck out, dexterity/melee weapons are good for the extra damage and to-hit, and if you're wearing the heavier armors and are losing AP, defense is good. I'd avoid strength though, since its only advantage is damage, and most monsters will take two hits to kill even if you do boost your strength.

It's pretty much useless. The only "plus" about it is that it only takes one ingredient to make, and it's a fairly common ingredient. Then again icicle moss is used in a lot of potions, including several really useful ones, so you should be able to find better uses for it (Like making healing elixirs instead of healing potions.)

I hope your multiple restarts haven't ruined your experience. The ending will make it worthwhile-- no really! :P

Not a village, a camp where they barter with you and teach alchemy and all sorts of nifty highland-ish stuff.... Not that I was ever considering that, or that you were remarkably close to the original script or anything.....

Am I really that transparent? :P

The objective is to hold out as long as you can, so just stand in the center of the circle and kill anyone who comes near. I've never tried staying out of combat mode, but I suppose that would negate the wargs' ap bonus which allows them to attack twice, plus it'd at least buy you a few turns before the wargs get to you. You should be able to beat this without many potions, but a hardiness philter and some healing elixirs couldn't hurt.

Changing Creature Definitions in Blades of Avernum Editor

Only things that you can set in the editor, so I suppose te_default_script falls into this category as well. Also I'll point out that I've had problems with placing a monster and subsequently altering it's default script, but the script remains as the old default from when I first placed it rather than the new default, even though the creature's script still says 'Default'. I think 'Reload Scenario Script' will fix this?

Darkness is available from Ephesos' site, but the rest are unreleased. Some designers are planning to do some more work on their scenarios, so I'm not sure which are really ready to play. I can say that the Tales are playable and will probably not change much before the final release. However you aren't going to get the full story until the compilation comes out, so you'd be best off waiting and getting the most polished version.

The wait is over-- the results are in.

First, I tally all the scenarios' scores, only counting the judges who have no scenarios in the contest.
AVM 37
Aphobia 29
Avatar 31
Darkness 24
ITS 31

7.5 IMAGINE THIS SCENARIO
6. Aphobia
5. Outpost Valley
4. Darkness
3. The Knight's Tale

1. Merchant's Tale
The Merchant's Tale is the winner. Now to go backwards.

Giving us the next set of results.
1. Merchant's Tale
2. Bounty
3. Knight's
4. Darkness

Congratulations and thanks to everybody who participated in what I found to be a very enjoyable and successful contest. Thanks also to the judges who took the time to give their feedback. And a special thanks to TM, who had as much a hand in running this as I.

Still waiting on Rotghroth and Tyran. Scores were supposed to be in today, but I didn't even have the judging site up until a day late, so I'm extending the deadline to friday. If they aren't all in by then I'll just go with what we've got.

Leaving out custom graphics to avoid having to make a CMG would be a bit of an overreaction. There's always someone willing to convert it, and even if worst comes to worst you could always get Jeff to make one for you-- you'd just have to wait until spiderweb updated its tables.

Awesome. I just realised I've never used one of your character graphics, even though they're some of the best I've seen..... Oh well, I use the armor stands and empire terrains enough to make up for it.

Oh and what happened to the preview page? Are you going to finish any of those? I remember there was one I really liked (A paladin maybe?) that looked like all it was missing was a death pose.

The .bas and scripts don't need any conversions. However for a scenario to work for Macs you need a cmg instead of just bitmaps.

Unfortunately windows users can't create these files, so you have to find some kind soul with a Mac to make one for you with Graphic Adjuster, then repackage the scenario.
