Gah! I have a half finished beta report in front of me, but I hit a wall when I encountered a rather nasty error with that gremlin that suicides. I'll get it sent to you tonight or tomorrow so my plate is cleared for the 24.

Edit: Report sent. When I said later tonight I wasn't messing around. :P

Actually in my experience Jeff's pretty prompt about this kind of thing. I'd expect to hear back within a day.

Rules question:

Should importing towns be allowed? I know I stated that town design needs to be done the day of, but importing towns from already created scenarios is a tad different than drawing new towns ahead of time.

I put this up to you guys because this affects me, and I don't want to go making rules to give myself an advantage. Specifically I was thinking of doing several scenarios for the contest that would fit together into a multi-part story. There would be some overlap occasionally where I'd want to import a town, which is why I ask ahead of time before I begin work. This rule could also apply to designers who want to perhaps make a short sequel to a previous work, and could import an old town.

I'll leave this up to you guys-- I'll get by regardless of which way you decide.

The contest week is now officially the coming week: 12 am EST of sunday the 22nd to 12pm EST of saturday the 28th.

Reminder to potential participants: you may choose any 24 hour span, so long as you clock in when you begin work and have the finished scenario sent to twenty_four_hour_scenario@yahoo.com before 24 hours have passed. You may make as many scenarios as you want, and enter as many as you want in the contest. You just have to clock in for each scenario, and no scenario can take longer than 24 hours (Iron man anyone?)

How is it more realistic for thrown missiles (And archery really) to be completely useless? You can ruin someone's day with a javelin.

A3 Character Races in The Avernum Trilogy

Firstly this is the trilogy, so that's irrelevant. Secondly it's irrelevant anyhow, since it is impossible to change race in BoA as well, even with the HLPM.

You cannot change a preexisting character's race. If it's an aesthetics thing you can just change their graphics, but if if you actually need a non-human for some event you'll have to create a new PC. You can leave your old PC behind in Fort Emergence temporarily, then pick him back up once you've done whatever it is you wanted the slith/nephil for.

Judging will begin August 1st, but I'm not sure when the deadline would be. It depends on how many scenarios we get, but it shouldn't take that long regardless since the scenarios will be short. I'll tentatively say a week from then.

Bad news Eph, the contest started 18 hours ago... :D

Actually I think next week will be the week, meaning the contest will span from the morning of the 22nd to midnight of the 28th. This seems to fit everybody's schedule except Thralni (to whom I apologize. The only week that looks like it'd work for you is the 5th - 11th, which is getting close to the start of school and would mean judging would be going on the week I'd be moving in. Sorry.)

I would have preferred to have everybody working on one day-- I thought it'd be a little more contest-ish than just having everybody do their own thing-- but I'm growing increasingly doubtful about how practical this would be. Even if we choose a Saturday where most people would be free, there will always be a few who work that day (like myself...) or are otherwise unable to participate. I mean look at the BoA chat turnouts-- half the people who say they're coming usually are no shows, and that's just a few hours, not a whole day.

I was already thinking that perhaps a make up day would be necessary, but I suppose simply extending it to a contest week rather than a contest day would be the best way to be all-inclusive.

So as cool as it'd be to have a good portion of the Blades community all scrambling to turn out a scenario between morning and midnight of Saturday the xth, ultimately I'd rather have the entire community (or at least as many as want to participate) choosing a day that suits them and doing their own thing.

Thoughts? Would this be better for everybody? It's sure as hell going to make it easier for me to schedule (Although we still need to pick a week. :P )

Magical Effects? in Blades of Avernum

You can consult the "Blades of Avernum Manual, Order Form" which is a pdf that can be found in the Blades of Avernum data folder. There is a section in there called "Conditions" that lists all the magical effects.

It sounds, though, like you are webbed. Webs slow your characters, and must be cleaned by pausing several times (Hit the wait button until the webs disappear.)

Yes, that is correct. You are allowed to plan ahead, and this includes what graphics you intend to use. If you want to download these graphics and put them in a folder somewhere then that's fine-- it's not like it'd save you more than a few moments.

Planning ahead is alright, but nothing handwritten. Basically as long as you haven't put pen to paper you're fine.

As for graphics, anything explicitly for this scenario must be made the day of, but general graphics (like the Louvre etc) are fine. The same applies to scripts. If it's already been written (Codex or used in other scenarios) then it's alright to use. But writing a new script ahead of time for a boss battle or something is not.

Jack Bauer jokes not welcome...

The idea is simple-- design a scenario in a single day. The rules, as settled on by myself and TM:
quote:
1. Work begins at 12 am EST of the contest date. Entries must be submitted by midnight EST of the contest date (TBA)

2. Scenario must be made entirely on the contest day. Creature scripts/terrain scripts that have already been written are acceptable, but all other script work and town design needs to be done that one day.

3. Once entries are submitted, designers will have another 3 days before judging begins during which they can beta test.

4. Judges will rank scenarios from first to last, a la the 1/10 judging. Contest participants are eligible to judge, but their scores will not be counted until their own scenarios are eliminated. Judging will begin 3 days after the initial deadline, and will last as long as is deemed necessary (Depending on how many judges we have and how many entries)
That's about it. We still need to decide on a day for the contest. Most likely we'll wind up doing it on a Saturday or Sunday, but we need to figure out who is free when.

If you're interested in participating post here and weigh in on what day is good for you. If you wish to judge please post as well.

That is all.

how is this not working? in Blades of Avernum Editor
Lifecrafter

I think this is what you were going for with the first script:
while (pchar < (party_size() + 1)){
if((char_on_loc(26,10) != pchar) && (char_on_loc(26,11) != pchar) && (char_on_loc(26,14) != pchar) && etc...){
put_boom_on_char(pchar,0,0);
run_animation_sound(51);
kill_char(pchar,3,0);
clear_buffer();
append_char_name(pchar);
append_string(" is ");
append_string("obliterated!");
get_buffer_text(teststring);
print_str_color(teststring,3);
}
pchar = pchar + 1;
}
Checks for each PC whether or not he's on one of the safe spots, and kills him if he isn't.

As for the creature script, I'm not patient enough to debug that. But at first glance I'd say the problem is, as Niemand said, with the variable. Remember that whenever you erase the creature and activate a new group the value T is lost. Use a flag.

I've always found first aid to be pretty much useless. Just carry energy potions-- or even better put the points you'd spend on first aid in alchemy so you can make energy potions.

Copying towns? in Blades of Avernum Editor

I usually back up my scenario before I use delete or import town, partly because I'm afraid the editor itself will screw up and partly because I'm afraid I'll write over the wrong town. And I always back up before using the expand outdoors feature in the 3d editor, I've had bad experiences with that.

Import/delete town has never messed up on me though, so it's safe. Just don't import over the wrong town-- that I have done, and it sucks if you don't have a backup.
