The picture is clearly not totally symmetrical: I was just trying to analyse why I found it disturbing.
There is a correspondence between some facial features and some medical syndromes, the most obvious of which is Down's syndrome. This may underly our propensity to read facial types for psychologigal types.

It has the disturbing look of one of those photoshop images where one half of the face is flipped and pasted back to make a too-symmetrical image.

Hitchhiker was originally a radio series, of which only the first two "phases" were made. In that form it is totally brilliant. I can't remember whether the books or the TV series came out next: all the plots diverged slightly. The most beautiful aspect of the TV series was the painstakingly hand-animated "book" sequences.
Recently the two original radio phases were re-broadcast, followed by new productions of the remaining three books with as many of the original cast as survive, and Adams as Agrajag. They are being released on CD, and I recommend them thouroughly.

How do we pronounce... in General

Featherstonehaugh being pronounced "Fanshaw" for instance. (An exaggerated example created by P.G. Wodehouse, unless I'm much mistaken, but there are some reason English surnames that are about that bad!)

Sadly, that example is real.

So, here's a potted explanation:

Firstly, you didn't get a surname unless you were upperclass, if by that you mean a family name. If you were a general peasant type then "John" was enough, unles there were two Johns, in which case you might be "Big John" or "Little John" or "John the smith" or "John from by the bridge" or so on. It was a personal nickname, not one you passed on.

So, here you are, an upperclass person with a family name. It gets written down on a document or a map, normally in connection with some legal matter, often concerning property. The way it's written down, that's the way it's written. Over time, with the shifts in language, the vowels change, syllables get dropped, but you have a document that shows how your name is written. Look, you can see, it's written here. That's how you write my name. Well, the document is in Latin, or French, so the spelling is fancy. I can't read anyhow: I'm a nobleman who hires people to do these things!

Summary: the names were written down and their spelling was frozen a long time ago. The pronunciation has evolved over time, like that of any word.

Oh, and anybody who can accept the pronunciations of Kansas and Arkansas as logical can lay off Brit placenames.

Life Expectancy in General

*sigh* as both Aran and I tried to point out, life expectancy doesn't have a lot to do with expected age of death.
It's purely retrospective, and you also have to include the age from which it is calculated.

Thuryl's comment is also very apt.

There is a supplementary problem with charismatic leaders: if they see other charismatic people as challengers, and remove them from the organisation, when the charismatic leader has to step down there is no successor.

Life Expectancy in General
La Canaliste
Member # 5563

The thing to remember about life expectancy is that it only samples people who are dead.
It is the mean age at death of a particular group of people.

In a generation that is all dead, you can calculate various different life expectancies. Life expectancy at birth will be rather low because it takes into account all those children who die very young. Life expectancy at say 15 will be higher, because all those who die of childhood diseases and childhood accidents will no longer be in the sample, and so on.

Thus the research that produced this conclusion must have looked at a number of dead people, and related their age of death to the amount of time they spent at a computer. I would be interested to know how they asked the dead people how long they spent at the computer!
They should, to be fair, have controlled for any other factors such as gender, smoking, drinking, ilnesses such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease.
They should also have investigated whether factors that contributed to long computer hours also contributed to shorter life. For example: it is too dangerous to go outside therefore I communicate through the computer.

A group of living people can only have an estimated life expectancy.
