I collect trivia. I will swap for wits if they are trivial enough.

Why oh why do people insist on posting in discussion topics in a way that adds nothing to the argument but simply boosts their post count?

Why do they ask rhetorical questions which are fundamentally empty and almost invariably ultimately missplet?

Good afternoon dear anarchist.
As I have learned to say in another context, Vilenlaki su cudni.

ADoS is definitely Vilenlak, so do not worry about him. Just be yourself, which eems to be something gentle, and I will give you another phrase: sve je dobro.

Any conferences in which I have been involved, either organising or presenting, have had a peer review process for accepting papers, though less rigorous than for journals. Conference papers tend also to be shorter, and more of a signpost than an in-depth treatment of one's methods and results.
These were in the field of mathematics education, by the way.

Australia is thus too small to be a continent but to big to be an island, and hence does not exist.
I have long suspected that somewhere so nice was a figment of the imagination, and for this reason will have to explain to my beloved he really can't emigrate there.

These last posts have just opened my eyes to the understanding that theism includes an element of atheism, in that the re are very few people (who must be very confused) who would believe in ALL possible gods. Thus belief in one particular system of divinity tends to exclude belief in some others: monotheism excludes dualism or polytheism, for example.
I have no idea where that idea leads, except to say that total atheism is maybe an extreme form of a beief system but not different in kind from theism.

Dan Brown Book... in General

I was going to write an essay about the various things that are supposed to be shocking or revelatory in Brown's book, but frankly it is a badly written mess of plot holes and does not merit serious criticism.
It will only shock people who find it an appalling waste of paper or those who have a very shaky understanding of the doctrines it is supposed to be attacking.
All the bases of the "research" on which it is supposed to be based (Rennes le Chateau, Beranger Sauniere, Pierre Plantard, the Priory of Sion, and so on) have been shown to be unsound: see Wikipedia for pointers.
I enjoy thrillers when the writer has out as much effort into writing them as he expects me to put into reading them, but this one is pure tosh.

By sacrificing your dearest hopes to the dark gods of the gloomy pit.

By contemplating the mystery that is the Trinity of Postification.

By feeding your sanity drop by drop to the Fluffy Turtles of the bucket at the door.

By amusing Drake the Pirate or annoying *i the Mighty.

Khoth sort of made the fluffy turtles special...
I passed him one in a chat, and he wondered what kind of fungus made it fluffy.
Before that they were simple soft toys.
After that they were something else.

Oh, I gave up AIM after Trillian went evil on me, and now use ICQ.

I find myself narrowing in on the question which is the "real personality?"
I would think that the 'real' personality comes out more readily in an online forum, then it does in real life. RL has so many expectations from family and friends and much larger consequences for breaking those expectations. It is much easier to tell a complete stranger, whom you have no obligation to ever talk to again, who you really are. Especially those deep dark secrets that warrent rejection.

Which is the "real" personality, and to whom you would be more likely to reveal it is a complex issue.

There are things in my life that I'd be far more likely to disclose online than to anybody I know, because I've seen the repercussions of revealing such things in RL. I could simply disappear and never have to see the reactions of online acquaintances. On the other hand we have seen liars and fantasists here on Spidweb who have constructed webs of deceit that ended up hurting people who initially took them seriously.

The persona that we construct here is different from the persona we use offline, and in different contexts offline, because an individual's personality is actually too big to show more than one aspect of it at once. We reveal part of who we are, some part by choice, some part involuntarily, and then our interlocutors construct a mental image that incorporates the elements that they notice from our posts.

If there are elements that cannot be incorporated consistently then we have three options. We can rearrange the mental image to include them, if the new pieces can be made to fit. We can ignore the incongruous elements and continue with the image that is familiar and comfortable. Otherwise we can try to fit the new elements, and if we cannot make them fit, we may decide that there has been some deception involved.

I think Procrastinator is struggling between the feeling that there was deception and trying to make the new pieces fit. In my experience it is easier to try to forget an extreme experience, because remembering it tends initially to recall all the associated feelings. One thus tries to wall off that part of oneself and pretend it is not there. This creates a piece of oneself that seems not to fit, so it is not surprising that it would appear to others that it does not fit: that it is incongruous.
