You have to assume the hole is like a tiny pipe sticking horizontally out of the side of the lower edge of the tank, otherwise the answer is either indeterminate, or directly below. Anyway, it is an energy balance question with a bit of projectiles in it, as Hairy Spider points out. Also, you do need to use a consistent set of units, either cgs (centimeters, grams, seconds) which has silly derived units like ergs (the amount of work done bt a bored student in one hour of lectures) or else mks (meters, kilograms, seconds). Actually, I really can't be bothered with an exposition of my encyclopaedic research into the theory of leaky tanks. You will just have to imagine it, and let it remain unsullied by translation from the Platonic ideal into earthly real form. -------------------- I am a mater of time and how . quote:It depends on what you mean by "why". *rushes in where biophysics lecturers and anges fear to tread* Explanation 1: low level fluid mechanics. The fluid slows down, so its kinetic energy drops. The energy has to go somewhere, so it is converted to pressure. Explanation 2: an analogy. Imagine traffic flow. If the traffic is flowing fast and smoothly, then it is well spaced out (no not like Thuryl on a Saturday night) and you may be able to "see" that the pressure is low. If it now slows down, as at a toll, the vehicles have to be a lot closer together. In fact the increase in "pressure" at a toll causes the road to bulge. There are many other levels of explanation. Like I said, it depends on what you mean by "why". -------------------- I am a mater of time and how . Deep down, you know you should have voted for Alcritas! In British English, we say "a hundred and one", "two thousand and twenty" but "four thousand, two hundred". On reflection, I would say that we class numbers in two groups: those that we name, such as units and tens: six, eleven, seventy-three, and those that we regard as collections: three hundred, six thousand, twenty-five million. We put an "and" between the collection numbers and the named numbers. Does that help? -------------------- I am a mater of time and how . Deep down, you know you should have voted for Alcritas! Oh! So Jewel is Mynt! To you also I send love and spiritual chocolates! Thank you to both you and Synergy, as well as Alec, for being thoughtful, polite and humble. Can I offer a thought from a friend of mine who calls himself the last of the Bogomils? 44. To be human is a gift. It is a gift to have the opportunity not to be what one must be, like an animal, but to be what one can be. Why is it that way? Why isn’t a human also simply what a human is? Why is it so complicated? Probably because it is given to the human to touch the doors of something that is somewhere beyond. Something beyond? That thing whose reflection sometimes glows inside us and fulfils us with beauty unreachable by our earthly senses. We are all searching: there are no simple answers. We try to grow towards the light, but we are never going to reach it. The search is the important thing, and we all see part of the truth. Jesus is my window to the light, and I think he is a perfect window, but language is imperfect and constantly shifing, and so the image is distorted. Anyway, I salute you all. -------------------- I am a pale shadow of the previous self. quote: Deep down, you know you should have voted for Alcritas! Keep posting, Synergy. I love the way you make me think. Edit: yes, I know you don't know who the hell (gehenna, purifying fire, whatever) I am, or what I think or stand for, but just do it anyway. Canal was archived by Khothie on his university web space. After four years as a student, he was finally expelled into the outer darkness of gainful employment, and it no longer has a home. Actually, I haven't written any Canal for a couple of years. Life itself got a bit too gothic for it to be fun. Maybe some of the lighter strands are due for revival if some kind person could offer a home? -------------------- I am a mater of time and how . If I remember correctly, and it was a long time ago that I studied these things, it is because the electric motor has higher torque at low revs than the diesel. This could be a hallucination due to too much tea, though. -------------------- I am a pale shadow of the previous self. quote: Deep down, you know you should have voted for Alcritas! This has as much meaning as "a whiter shade of pale". It was previously posted on Desp, but I found it in a notebook while hunting for a price list for selling my armour (don't ask). Let me walk Let me walk across the bridge that holds the nighttime from the morning: Let me catch the weeping stars and set them on their journey home. There was acid on the knife that cut the jewels from my girdle Which sent the final message from the sunlight to the stone. And tell me, master mariner, whose daughter you are bedding And if you sing her songs as you sit her on your knee And if the forty thousand birds that featured at your wedding Were weighing down the branches as you tied her to the tree. And tell me if the autographs of Kissinger and Monroe Are framed in silver frames above your hallway shelf And when the darkness thickens round the fir trees in the mountains And the velvet drapes need drawing: do you still do that yourself? So as the darkness falls like a feather on the carpet Let us take a final look into the ruins of the fire There was music once and dicing and gaiety and laughter And the echo of them ripples and the ghost will not expire. No meaning, no significance, just words. Enjoy Edit: fixed a typo [ Thursday, October 27, 2005 00:45: Message edited by: saunders ] -------------------- I am a mater of time and how . *has been rocked to her socks by some of this thread* Alex, that was really brave and honest. I am glad that your posthas been treated with such maturity by so many subsequent posters. Many of us, myself included, struggle with the literal hardline interpretation of faith matters. Fortunately none of my struggles have driven me to a position where I've been condemned. That doesn't mean I'm proud of a lot of things I've done, and places where I've gone wrong. As has been pointed out above, if you believe in a god of love, rather than majoring on the condemnatory lakes of brimstone aspects, then you may find it easier not only to forgive your own humanity but that of other people. -------------------- I am a pale shadow of the previous self. quote: Deep down, you know you should have voted for Alcritas!
