I'm pretty sure I joined before Misc. got .. killed. More or less. But I can't be sure because I never looked. I didn't come into General until like.. after months. Or weeks. I forget. I only read the gaming forums back then. :\ I'm kinda angry about that, but oh well.

I love this episode because it seems to personify much of that which is Spidweb.

-------------------------------------------

Alec: In early 2003, I believe it was, I was playing Fallout. I had just cleansed Antium by holy fire when something popped. Real loud, inside the monitor, and the screen flickered out. Then it came back -- upside down, at half the normal width, in grayscale. A split second later, I caught the most terrifying odor I've ever smelled in my life. In a small room, illuminated by the hostile glare of a CRT that chose that moment to buy the farm loud, fast, and hard, I smelled roasting ham.

I was out as soon as it took to rip the surge protector out of the wall and run like hell. Days later, the monitor still smelled like ham. I imagine it still does, but have no way to check.

dareva: I am curious, yet horrified, about what caused the ham smell.

Saunders: Alec had been using the monitor to cook his morning bacon by irradiation for years. Unbeknown to him, a slice had fallen down one day into the dark recesses of the casing, and had mutated into a unique life form. As it began to explore its world, it accidentally shorted the power supply, causing havoc to the peripheral operation, and ending its brief existence in a blaze of ham smell.

That sounds so funny. Where's the orignal thread - might be funny to read it all.

As for me, I'm one of those jonny-come-latelys that pretend to know what they're talking about, and who nod and utter positive sounding sounds under their breath, but are actually totally bewildered.

I remember the thread, and I'm sure I saved it. Unfortunately, my Pied Piper database isn't yet up.

I'd say I'm working on it as fast as I can, but in fact I'm trying to catch up on NaNo. But I've resolved to get my own webspace in December, and I'll put the entire database there. It'll be interactive, searchable by date, member, length, content, etc. and all other kinds of goodies.

Meanwhile, try this Google search. First three results; be sure to go to the cache since the actual thread has been deleted.

That search gives no results for me, and I can't get any results with any other search terms I can come up with either. Oh well.

That is weird to the extreme. I suspect it is Google's "localization" thing at work again. Try these.

Try these to get straight to the cache. If those don't work, I'll be a bit freaked out. Page 1, Page 2, Page 3.

I have been around for a good long time. I just don't post much unless I have something to say.

That, and all the talk of cheating and such usually drives me away from the game boards. There is a brief golden moment though when a game is just released for the Mac when there are some really good game players... People who actually play and love the challenge, and there is some great chit chat on how do to this or that. People talk about how to beat the game with strategy. Skill. You know, things that matter. And then in no time at all it disolves in to talk about trainers and how to edit scripts and cheat.

Oh, and I think I have one of those coveted original 1000 thousand. I will look after this is posted.

Yeah, that was 3 months before I joined.

Back when I came to General, we still had Alec, TGM, and Rosycat.

I remember watching most everything from the sidelines, pretending to be apart of it. And when I finally did join the fray, it seemed so less cool. I'm kinda wishing now I had stayed away from that "register" button.

Honestly, I'm not sure what all I did experience. That Xian Skull topic. A couple other 'famous' threads. Many references to illicit activities. I never really feel like an oldbie, but every once in a while I look at my "member since" thing and realize I've been here longer than most.

I remember spamming up the Hint and Exile 2 (when the Exile boards were still separate) boards. I think I joined around the same time as Sullust although I can't be too sure; he exhibited a much more mature behavior than myself. I also remember when MSW joined and pracitcally took control of the Balthazar the Mad RP (the only successful RP I can remember.)

Mh?

I mean, I miss her too, but that's an odd reaction. Or are you referring to the fact that it was ben who mentioned her?

Or didn't you notice she left? She was already coming here very rarely by the time you got banned... I think.

That was posted by TM. And I'm pretty sure that's the only hint I can give you within the bounds of the CoC.

TM is a very bad person.

Saunders is a very good bad person.

—Alorael, who is quite sure that there are no typos in this post. He is also quite sure, on the subject of memories, that some people have very selective ones. Think back to the days of Rosycat mania.

I remember I once said she looked like Michal Jackson in one picture. And she did... but that was probably just the picture. :P

In most photos, she looked less feminine than Michael Jackson.

Although that isn't hard. :P
