By my timeline, which a lot of people don't like because it's based on the Avernum games and not the Exile games -- and Jeff changed the dates for the Avernums -- Erika was exiled around the mid- to- late-770's (because she says she came down around the time of the war against Grah-Hoth and a book in Skarragath places that war at 40 years before A1, whose date counter begins at 817). By that reckoning, her exile would be shortly after the school closed. She says she was exiled because of a political struggle, presumably with Garzahd -- because he is the only major archmage not to get sent down -- and it may have been over the use of magic in the Empire: Garzahd wanted its use centralized and controlled, and Erika wanted something else. Er, she implies that it had something to do with getting the Emperor's favor, too, though, so who knows. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Actually, I kept my couple of fyoras all the way through and they leveled so many times that they were extremely powerful. At various times I saved the game, reabsorbed them, and made drayks, just to see if the drayks would be more powerful, but they weren't. So, as I mentioned earlier, I kept my same creations all the way through GF. Then again, I probably didn't put enough into my shaping skills. I know! For GF3, I'll not only name my drayk "Drakey," but also name my Fyora "Flamefiend." Hmm... I need another good fyora name. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Also, the line numbers for this particular error are notoriously bad. If there's nothing wrong with the line BoA is complaining about, check if you're missing end parentheses in a line above that. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Anyone ever wondered what reset_dialog_preset_options actually does? Well, I tested it out, and here are the results. The call is equivalent to various other combinations of dialog calls. (I added returns in various places within the dialog strings in order to prevent board stretching.) reset_dialog_preset_options(0); is the same as reset_dialog(); reset_dialog_preset_options(1); is the same asreset_dialog_preset_options(2); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(3); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(4); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(5); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(6); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(7); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(8); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(9); is the same as reset_dialog_preset_options(10); is the same as Anything higher than 10 is the same as 0, which is the same as reset_dialog by itself. I have no idea if anyone will find this useful, but I just thought I'd post it because someone might. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Sadly, Alo, that will not happen. :P EDIT: Actually, maybe it will. There is actually some record of when VoDT happens. BoA's date counter places it at 855, which makes sense given that A3's date counter starts at 833. The order to close the school is dated eighty years before your party gets there. Top Ramen (low-cost, low-quality soup, if there are places in the world where ramen does not exist). Er, and last night I had burritos, I think. This is truly the college lifestyle. :D Well, it would be if I were also drinking beer. There's an empty flask-bottle of cognac a the shelf nearby, but I didn't drink it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. This feels like spam, but whatever. My desktop should come as no surprise to those who know me: http://www.buffy.nu/IMG/jpg/1069808963.jpg (only much higher resolution, of course :P ). EDIT: Grab does screenshots for OS X. EDIT 2: That link apparently no longer goes to the original picture, which was Michelle Trachtenberg in the beach scene in Eurotrip. Open up the room a little bit. BoA isn't great about figuring out exactly how to place the characters, and if there isn't a lot of space near your starting location, it will put them somewhere else, somewhere seemingly random, as you're describing. Make the room bigger. EDIT: TM, you're freaking me out. :P [ Monday, July 26, 2004 16:51: Message edited by: Kelandon ] -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As far as the possibility of a German Blades audience, I don't know, but the starting location should be easy to handle. Did you mark the place that you wanted using the Set Starting Location option in the Town menu? That's the way to specify where the party originally starts out. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. So would evil monsters using magic be okay, as long as good characters don't use it? Final fight. Banshees etc. How do I beat it? I'm getting slaughtered every time. I think that since the banshees are invulnerable, I should be going after the blight spirit in the middle, but I can't do enough damage to kill it. I can't seem to find any secret doors or anything... My party isn't terribly strong (avg about level 5), but it doesn't seem like it should matter. EDIT: Never mind. Sleep fields did the trick. Thanks, Imban. [ Monday, July 26, 2004 13:09: Message edited by: Kelandon ] -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Assuming that you mean the control panel in Major Waste, you need a key from the library golem. There is a book missing in the School Library. You can find several textbooks around the school (one in the Student Quarters by the meditation cells in the west of that area, past a secret door one of the southern cells). Drop it on the rug where there's clearly a textbook missing. You'll get a key in return. EDIT: If you need help with any of those steps, re-post with which one you're having trouble with. Fortunately, as I have edited into my previous post, the script is fixed now. As a note for anyone who is reading this now and wonders what I was talking about, the part that says: // Based on doorlever.txt by www.spidweb.com. It's doorlvever.txt, except a click sound and a different text box. was edited in as a result of my comments. Without that, it was plagiarism, intentional or not. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I certainly wouldn't want to have any part in a forum where a mod commits blatant plagiarism and the admin passes it over. Even if I were convinced that this BoA Center isn't harmful, and even if I were convinced that the population there consists of genuine designers who have enough knowledge about the editor that entering into design discussion with them would be worthwhile, and even if I were convinced that this site will survive for more than a few weeks, all of which would take considerably more justification than Overwhelming or anyone else has offered, this would turn me off completely to the site and everyone in it. EDIT: Sigh. After a discussion with Micael, it appears that this script was made in good faith, and it was simply an error that caused it to appear on the site as it does right now. As it stands, the script is plagiaristic, but evidently of the accidental (and less harmful) kind. It should be noted, however, that the very fact that this has happened at all (and Overwhelming's rather underwhelming response) is a demonstration of why this site is not a good idea. EDIT 2: And it is fixed. I have no further complaints against this script. We would have to change our electoral laws in order for a third party to gain any sort of power, I think. I really don't like our two-party system, because I don't feel that it gives us a great deal of choice, but we're pretty much stuck with it in the system that we're in right now. What I would really like to do is push for proportional representation in the lower house of Congress. Instead of voting for a representative, everyone in the nation would vote for a party, and then seats would be assigned according to percentages, ie, if the Democrats got 48% of the vote, they would get 48% of the seats, and if the Greens got 3% of the vote, they would get 3% of the seats -- which really doesn't sound like a lot, but that comes out to about 13 seats, which is a pretty big deal. The parties would have set up ordered lists of 435 people who would serve as Representatives, so they would have declared already who they wanted to be in there. It'd be really interesting to see what third parties did in this case, because it would give them a say -- and in fact, the House of Representatives would probably be taken by a coalition, not a specific party, which would completely change the way that decision-making happens. But that's just a pipe dream. We're stuck with the two-party system, along with the ups of such a system and, as we've been seeing for the past few years (or maybe as much as a decade or so), the downs of it, too. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Your states are probably the same. When you have a second character in the same town that speaks, don't use the same states that you used for the first character. So, if your first character used states 1-8, the nextstate on the first node of your second character should be 9. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
