If it's supposed to happen at a specific time or place, you could just throw in a begin_talk_mode in a town state and then call that state at the specified time. Following NPCs have their own scripts, too, so you can do the same thing but have it in the character's script -- which may be better, because then it will have the "Done" button that it wouldn't have otherwise. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Ephesos: In conclusion, yarr. I have no idea about a, but I believe you can fix b with a block_entry call. Since the state is called before the party actually steps into the space, what's happening is that it's playing the cut scene and then stepping into the space from before. I think just sticking block_entry(1) at the beginning of this state will fix that. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. There was a point in my scenario where I had the party mention the Empire, and then a character (who was from the utter depths of Avernum) said, "I have never heard of this 'Empire.' " It was supposed to be a text bubble. That's why I tried to have quotes in a text bubble. For the record, te_anim_steps does work. Dahak is just wrong. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! I just realized that Demonslayer posted right after Rosy. It is a good thing that he used the masculine forms, or else I would've been a bit worried. Come to think of it, I am a bit worried anyway, but I would've been more worried if he had used a feminine pronoun. :P -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. He once said that he keeps making games for fear of losing his house (or something like that). He just had a daughter, so I doubt his expenses are going down. I'd say the man will keep on working for some time yet. Although what exactly he will make remains to be seen, as you can tell from the numerous old speculation threads lying around, and the one current one. EDIT: Well, whatever. He has a daughter, a young one, making his expenses unlikely to go down any time soon. As this is the current speculation thread, here are some really odd things I've found: A review of GF2 Specifically: "Geneforge 2 is the last game that will use the engine that first appeared in Spiderweb's Nethergate. I personally can't wait to see what's next from Jeff Vogel and Spiderweb's new engine." Wtf? GF2's engine was the Geneforge engine, which was graphically similar to Nethergate's, but was real-time, not turn-based. And I thought GF3 would have GF2's engine. So maybe this sparkly new engine that he described in the Wrap is the GF3 engine. Or maybe the person who wrote that review is just an uninformed fool. Or... dear god. Maybe the GF3 engine and the A4 engine will be... the SAME ENGINE! FIGHT GENEFORGIZATION! Speaking of the Wrap, this particular paragraph has caused a LOT of speculation: "Second, we decided to use the Avernum engine. Realistically, economically, going with the old engine really worked for us. It shaved months off the development time. But it's an old engine, and clunky in a lot of small ways. This is its last game. Should we make an Avernum 4 (which is likely), the engine will be sparkly and new." But then... as in the above post, he may just be screwing with us. Damned if I know what any of this means. And how odd: JV evidently originally wanted to make Geneforge scenario-based, like BoE. This may be why he gave us Geneforge's scripts for BoA, even though the Avernum Trilogy didn't use them. And yet more evidence for the possibility of A4: "Geneforge 3 seems very likely. I like writing Geneforge games, and people like playing them (or, at least, ordering them). Beyond that, however, I have absolutely no idea. I haven't given up on the idea of going back on my sworn word and writing Avernum 4. A lot of people would really like that." And that's all I can find. No more relevant interviews, nothing. He has said very little on the matter, other than the suggestion that he will make a new and better engine for a game soon, that he will make GF3, and that he might make A4. I guess we'll all find out in good time.... EDIT: Why I felt the need to summarize our evidence into one post, I have no idea. I'm guessing this is a height problem. What height is your in-town area set at, and what does the other side of the town (at the west exit) look like? EDIT: Or, more pressingly, does it NOT look like this when you play it in the game itself? For the record, I can't reproduce this, but I have noticed that the dark tiles outside the town's borders sometimes conform to what's on the edge of the town and sometimes don't (and if they don't, they just stay black). Sometimes I will see grass outside town and sometimes I won't -- and because BoA actually does this in the game, I think it may be an accurate representation of what the town will look like when you enter it. I have no idea if this is related to what you're talking about, though. Isaac, have you gotten any sort of response about hosting? I have a bunch of open web space, so if you need someone else to host it, I can do it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. No, nothing will be done. I suppose Jeff could change the thing about the combat poses, and for the new engine for his next game he might make something like what Eldiran suggested for the graphics, but for BoA, we're pretty much stuck with what we have. My assumption is that if it's not clearly and undisputably classifiable as a bug, Jeff will not change it for BoA. quote:Yeah, there'll be a v1.1.1 with new scenario books in the Library at some point. Probably in a month or two, when new scenarios have come out. And if you make a level 20 party for ZKR using the HLPM (or that sort of thing), that party is pretty legitimate, in my opinion. I did my best not to make anything overpowered. That's kind of what the Library is for, to tell you what setting on the Level Raiser would be appropriate for each scenario. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:Some might not call this wisdom. Homeschooling suits some people better than others, and different age ranges in different ways. I was homeschooled in 1st and 2nd grade to (I suspect) great advantage, because I spent those years reading everything I could get my hands on and not getting burned out on school. I went back to the classroom after that and have stayed ever since, and I wouldn't want it any other way. My little brother is homeschooled right now for middle school, and it seems to be working out for him. It seems clear that individuals' results vary according to their needs. One of the major factors in favor of homeschooling is even a great teacher teaching twenty or thirty students at once is often no more effective than one normal person focusing on one student. There are exceptions, obviously, but this can frequently be the case. Moreover, my mom (who did most of the teaching for my family's homeschooling) is a California state-certified teacher and was a professional teacher for, oh, something like a decade. My dad was a teacher for slightly less time. This worked well. Er, yes, the topic. Well, I'm 19, as I probably have posted before. Middle school rather sucked. High school was fun, particularly by junior year. College is not particularly better than senior year was, at least so far, but I'm only entering my second year, so we'll see. Like the title says. From the version history in the readme: 7/21/04 - v1.1 - Changed the setup completely, so that the Level Raiser, the Shopping Area, and the Arena are separate, and the player can use each of the parts as many times as desired. Changed the way to select levels into a system that is a bit less clunky. (Exact levels are now supported!) Added even more excessive power for god parties (potions). Commented all of the code. Added the Library. No more killing of Arena fans. Added a time lapse to the Healing Rune to regenerate special abilities. Small bug fix involving what level the HLPM reads the party as. Did a beta test! Hopefully Spiderweb will host it this time, because I'm actually going to try to get them to. To players: if you want mindless violence, bring in a party and fight a few rounds in the Arena. To designers: now we have an outlet for mindless violence. There is no need to make scenarios that serve only as an outlet for that. Also to designers: this version of the HLPM uses some fun tricks with code that are finally getting out of the basic level and into something a teensy bit advanced. You can literally copy and paste the numeric input function into a state in your scenario and it should just about work. I've commented all the code, so you should be able to read what's going on pretty easily, too, so anyone who's new to Avernumscript or wants to see how someone else codes can open up the scripts and read it. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. If you tested it and it does in fact work, then I take that back. I don't understand how it could possibly work -- creatures are not supposed to stay in TALKING_STATE after you've talked to them, nor are they supposed to enter it without you talking to them -- but if it does, then clearly there's something here that I don't understand. Oh. Wait. It is in the START_STATE, too. Never mind. My apologies. The clutter in the TALKING_STATE is unnecessary, but the code in the START_STATE will work. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
