This reminded me of my favorite analogy for the second law of thermodynamics: you know those yogurts with "fruit on the bottom," the ones you have to stir to make into flavored yogurt?

Well, if you stir the yogurt, the fruit will get mixed in, but if you stir the opposite direction, the fruit won't unstir out. That's increasing entropy.

This may be completely irrelevant, but I like it, so there.

Have you played Emulations? Awesome scenario, and barring one (at least for me) buzz-killing puzzle in the middle, it's otherwise fast-paced and action-filled.

EDIT: The other option, of course, is to read CSR.

Oh, yes, um, duh. I don't know why I didn't see this before. If you've set flag (1,9) — which I think means having cleaned up the source of the poisons — then you can just approach the shade and get his blessing rather than fighting him.

But you still can't get the Ghostly Bracelet, except on a PC.

EDIT: Yes, flag (1,9) gets set when you activate the machinery in Major Waste. So if you've cleaned up the poisons, you can just talk to him.

EDIT 2: Incidentally, if you want to fix your copy of VoDT, open it up in the scenario editor and find outdoor section (0,0) in the far northwest. Find the coordinates (7,45) — just south of the stone circle — and place a blue special encounter rectangle there using the dot tool. Tell it to call state 30. This fixes the problem.

Well, we run mice through mazes to find food in order to test their intelligence. I imagine it would be possible to do the same with humans, although the humanitarian concerns might be a problem.

I'm trying to find some kind of joke or hidden meaning in that. I mean, trying to correct the forum administrator about whether a member is banned or not is kind of funny, but I'd have thought you'd play it for more laughs.

EDIT: In reference to Venom, of course.

I read it was Nicaragua, but close enough. That's an extremely interesting example in itself — it must bear some relation to the question of how and when language arose among humans, which I think is a very interesting one indeed.

I'm trying to check if the Windows version of VoDT got modified so that the special rectangle extends another square south. I'm going to another computer to look.

EDIT: Success! Win-VoDT has a second special rectangle, one square south of the stone circle. My Mac-VoDT doesn't have that square, and a new download from SW shows that the current version of Mac-VoDT doesn't have it either.

In other words, PC users can get this item, but Mac users have to add a second rectangle in the editor. This is definitely a bug.

I don't disbelieve you, but what's your source on this? I'm interested in the textual status of the Bible, and I can't say I've found any really good scholarly information, just introductions to different Bibles. I know it's out there; I just don't know where to look.

My understanding was that the papyri prior to the third or fourth century AD was extremely fragmentary (and usually in the wrong language, i.e. Old Testament in Greek). Our good codices don't show up any earlier, as far as I know, than around the third or fourth century — and again, in Greek.

I mean, the Bible doesn't have nearly as many textual issues as, say, Catullus, but there are still some problems.

Oh and Ben, surely you've learned your lesson about trying to differentiate between "God" and "Allah" at this point? The words mean the same thing. One is English, and the other is Arabic. That's like trying to say, "No, Roman Catholicism as practiced in Mexico is what Dios says."

I can't see, looking at the scripts, how either of Roganth's methods would work. How do you enter a space with a full move block?

Roganth, are you on a Mac or a PC? What version of BoA are you using?

Lucidus, same questions to you.

Feel proud you've created a successful topic, though. My best effort resulted in a 10-pager, but that was on General. I can't say I've done anything in the game boards that has beaten more than a few pages.

At any rate, it might be best to let this topic die a natural death at this point, unless anyone else has something genuinely interesting to add.

Salmon: we do have Bibles written in Greek from the Late Empire (third or fourth century) that have been translated into English and published in well-known forms. They differ from the King James in only a few meaningful ways. The papyrus that turns up from earlier, though, presents another interesting problem. Textual criticism of the Bible is fascinating, because it's so controversial and problematic.

More significant to the average person, really, is that you have to be a little bit of a classical scholar just to understand the Bible. The Book of John, for instance, begins with some verses that seem incoherent unless you know that the "word" that it's talking about is actually "logos" in Greek, which had a set of meanings far more elaborate than "word" does in English, and also that it was a central part of Stoic philosophy. This sort of thing is all over the Bible, issues of context and just a completely different vocabulary in Greek from our vocabulary in English.

You know, while it may be possible to render almost any individual meaning in any language, certain languages allow certain wordplay that others don't. Certain languages allow ambiguities that other languages don't.

I mean, try translating puns. You can explain them, but you can't render them accurately, which means that one is more likely to see certain connections while speaking one language than while speaking another.

Certain languages also pay a lot more attention to certain aspects of meaning than others do, too (English loves possessives, for instance).

That means that although one could say anything in virtually any language, one is a lot more likely to say certain things in certain languages and not in others.

Desperance is largely the place to find old members that don't post here anymore. I go there for my ASD, Djur, and Scorpius fix, mostly (and probably others that are not coming to mind instantly).

Oh yeah, and maybe someday Pygmalion, and in the past, the Arena.

If you're just worried about someone walking through them, you could create an invisible terrain that was blocked in the right directions. I don't have time to check this right now, but I'm prett sure it's possible.

They should say so. I personally think that if the voters want to elect Alcritas or something, they ought to be able to. The result is explicitly up to the discretion of the admins anyway.
