Although change_char_health and change_char_energy can take negative values, award_party_xp can't. You'll need to use four change_char_xp calls if you want to drain xp from the whole party. Ben, imagine for a moment that you lived in Iran. You're a Christian. Iran is a Muslim theocracy. Wouldn't it bother you that the laws of the land were made by and for people who believed entirely different things than you do? That's the basic idea behind the separation of church and state: no religion is universal in the U.S., so using religion to justify laws that affect all of us is one step along the long road to the sort of oppression that is in Iran. In other words, making the world more "God-abiding" is not a legitimate activity of government. You can be as devout a person as you want and still agree with that, I would think; just apply the Golden Rule: would you want someone else forcing his or her beliefs on you? I'm pretty sure the "difficulty setting" didn't come in until after the ET. Hmm. Stughalf, something you said reminded me a bit of something I've experienced: nothing ever made outside the late 60's sounds like electric organ-driven acid rock of the sort that the Doors and several other less famous bands (Iron Butterfly, Arthur Brown, etc.) created. I mean, nothing. The genre appears to have simply gone out existence. Now, I really like that music, even Arthur Brown, who is so late-sixties that he sounds absurd to most people. But no one makes that music that anymore, so I have to keep digging up late-sixties songs that are increasingly obscure. I think some genres and styles just go away. Some resurface at intervals in different forms (ska, swing, others), and some just die (disco, acid rock). If your favorite genre is one that died, that era is going to sound better than any other. I'm not sure if this actually relates to anything that you said, but I think it's interesting and maybe someone else does too. :P -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. quote:Especially since that's more than twice the circumference of the Earth. I knew these distances were big, but I didn't realize they were quite that bad. However, if we could ever get up to relativistic speeds (non-trivial but also non-impossible), I'd expect that length contraction and time dilation would make interstellar travel practical, maybe not not for a quick vacation out on Alpha Centauri, but at least for a multi-generational voyage of discovery. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I know I absolutely can't stand it when people from the Spiderweb community call my by my real name. Even Wizcozski calls me Kel on these boards. I don't feel anonymous, though. My real name is not hard to figure out, nor is my location in the world (hint: my e-mail address). I have a listed telephone number, so anyone with my e-mail address and a phone directory could find me. Beyond that, you know my name, where I go to school, a little of how I think and how I spend my free time, and some know more than that. So where's the anonymity? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I was able to find out about the Ghostly Bracelet because you knew where the encounter was but not what to do to make it work. Finding a particular item somewhere in a scenario is much harder. For what it's worth, I'll take a quick look, though. EDIT: After a search through the scripts, I can say with reasonable certainty that it is not gained through an encounter. Either a specific character drops it upon dying or it's lying around in a town somewhere, or possibly it's not in the scenario at all. As I'm sure you're aware, Beatles songs were pretty heavily calculated, too, at least in the early days ("But Paul, pop songs don't last more than two minutes!"). Modern pop songs are by and large terrible because all pop songs are by and large terrible, but most of the classics have been filtered already. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. By that logic, Ben, every politician is a good politician. But I think we're getting off-topic. We were talking about his public image. Anyone else think it's interesting that most people don't know that he had only a tenuous claim to being a Texan for most of his early life? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Holly: I fail to see how snarking at someone for an effort to improve your etiquette is any better than snarking at someone for bad etiquette. I do recognize that many on these boards have been unpleasant at times, but you have to recognize when someone is being harsh and when someone is not. When someone says you are a damned idiot who should be shot, you are being insulted. When someone asks you politely to change something about your manner to be more in accordance with the CoC, you are not. Keep a sense of due proportion and be aware that you can't hear others' tone of voice. Trina: Often people use AIM-speak when online, and it takes considerably longer to read and understand, "aye so i was lik3 havn tubl wit da genfore ni da kepe thin or whatevah," than it does to read and understand, "Hi all. I'm in Dhonal's Keep and am having trouble with the mountain pass." Correcting people's grammar has at least as much to do with easing written communication as it does with enforcing some sort of class structure. To clarify the rules: Being nasty is wrong because it's wrong, not because you're not supposed to correct people's grammar. Politely correcting someone's etiquette or grammar is fine. I know Marlenny, and I'm pretty sure she was trying to be friendly, not condescending. Double-posting is against the CoC, but it's probably the most minor infraction, so Holly, now that you know not to do it, don't get too worked up about having been corrected, but don't double-post unless you are responding to two entirely separate quotes (and are quoting them in your post) or unless you need to bump a several-day-old topic for a legitimate reason. I'm pretty sure we're done here. The question in this topic has been answered, as far as I can tell, and other than trying to assign blame (never a productive activity), there's nothing else we can say about the rules. Therefore I shall lock this now. If anyone needs clarification on anything, PM me. His incredibly simplistic approach to problem-solving, to public speaking, and to day-to-day issues (his recent defense of Karl Rove: "I don't like it when my friends get accused of stuff, and Karl Rove is my friend") don't do very much to cultivate an image of intelligence. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. That's not exactly what Holly meant, which seems to be that there aren't many people posting here. I disagree with that, also, but it's a different point. I wonder if Aran's program could tell us what the posting rates are on this board for different time periods. It would be interesting to know if interest actually is dying down. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. That reminds me of one part of Baldur's Gate that I loathed and that basically made me unwilling to put in the effort to finish the game — random encounters traveling from section to another. And while the party rested, I think. If that gets implemented in GF4, count on me never playing a GF game again. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
