Depends on which game. Are you playing A1, A2, or A3?

In A3, it is in the House on a Hill, near Sharimik. Don't remember A1 or A2 -- looking them up now.

EDIT: In A2, according to the Crystal Source, it is in a "[t]ome in Erika's Tower. To break the seal on it, you need a Blessed Athame."

EDIT 2: Silver seriously needs to get Avernum Annotated Maps back up. I don't remember A1 at all, and it doesn't seem to be online anywhere.

I waited this long to post because I wanted to let things settle down some before I added potential fuel to the fire. *sigh* I didn't realize it would get this out of hand.

For anyone who's still wondering, the message that I sent to Stug basically explained my reasons for distributing the votes the way I did. I had to choose three from among Aran, Thuryl, Stug, and Alec, and I chose to support Aran, Thuryl, and Stug.

My reasoning pretty much boiled down to four things (in order of importance): 1) Aran, Thuryl, and Stughalf all seemed quite capable of being mods, 2) I didn't think Alec would make a good mod here on Spiderweb, 3) I didn't think that the administration would approve of him as a mod anyway (remember this is all subject to Drakey's approval), and 4) He hadn't been very nice to me in the campaign. No back-room conspiracies, just a simple recognition that when Dolphin gave her votes to Stug, my candidacy was no longer viable and I had to choose to back those whose were. This isn't a popularity contest; it's an election for mod of General, and I wanted to support the candidates that were the best for the job.

Yes, Aran and FBM, this action was undemocratic, but the rules were undemocratic to begin with, and Alec wrote the rules. I can't fathom what he expected to happen with the vote-shifting rule except what did happen — if it was not written for the express purpose of allowing someone to do the sort of thing that I did, then why was it there?

And for that matter, I didn't decide this election. I just acted last, so my action was most conspicuous. TM and Dolphin also played a significant role in determining the outcome, as did the voters: I gave very few votes to Aran or Thuryl. The #1, #2, and #4 candidates from the primaries made the run-offs, and Stughalf only trailed Alec by 4 votes, putting them in a virtual tie. The voters did this as much as me — I just acted as a tie-breaker. I'd think that if my voters trust me enough to be a mod, they'd trust me enough to judge who else could be a mod.

And my candidacy was not just a joke or an attempt to mess things up. I could moderate General. I explained what I'd do: try to keep the environment friendly and open. There was the whole Manhood Typing Party business, but that arose during the time when Zeviz was touting his EVOL party, and it wasn't even my idea; it was just what I ended up being called. I was a serious candidate, and while I may not have gone as crazy about it as others, I think I was credible. But alas, it was not to be.

Alec's modship was not to be, either, but I don't understand why he felt that his only option was to leave. I still lurk on Desperance, but I haven't posted in a while, and I don't think I will for a while yet, out of respect for his space. TM's banning was also unfortunate, but I think it was coming anyway. I'm sorry to have been a catalyst for both of these issues coming to a head, but I think that they were going to turn out this way regardless, if not here, then somewhere else soon.

Anyway, sorry for all the controversy, and I hope that clears up my end of things. I'll probably stay out of the rest of the election proceedings and probably won't post on this thread again.

That's not even remotely what I said. I said that civilization requires tool use. Intelligent life can exist without civilization, you know — humans did for hundreds of thousands of years.

I think Alorael sort of beat me to this point, but I can't stand being misquoted.

EDIT: Uh, Micawber, the mammals that developed a couple hundred million years ago don't much resemble the mammals today. From what I understand, planetary features do play a significant role in determining limits on size and other traits.

But... but... RW didn't make Homeland....

Besides, we all know that Drakey's a Mac user and so is RW. Coincidence? I think not!

Anyone see any similarities between War on Bigail and Ocean Bound? I don't, but I haven't played either. :P

Ghostly Bracelet in Blades of Avernum

Oh. Hah. That's kinda funny. The special rectangle you have to enter in order to trigger the dialog to take the item is placed on a stone circle, but stone circles have full move blocks.

In other words, you have to enter the stone circle in order to get the Ghostly Bracelet, but it's impossible to enter the stone circle.

As far as I can tell, this was an oversight on Jeff's part.

The answer to all of these is invariably: "It depends." Gratuitous, unnecessary violence and obscenity are annoying; if I wanted that, I'd play GTA. However, violence or even obscenity done well are very effective and useful.

Like everything else with Blades, there is no formula here.

Ghostly Bracelet in Blades of Avernum

Seletine's always correct. In this case, he only has half the answer, though.

You have to approach the ghost before ending the curse and you have to fight and kill it. The thing is, you have to have done something elsewhere to make it angry, or else it won't give you the option of attacking it. I'm trying to track down what these SDFs mean, and I'll edit my post or post again once I've figured it out.

EDIT: Okay, I see. You have to attempt to trap several other ghosts throughout the outdoors. Find the ghost wandering around northeast of Blinlock — it should run away from you, but not very far. It'll pop up a dialog; choose to "Trap it." It will shriek and go away.

Then find the shade in the forest northeast of Pangle. Do the same thing.

Finally, find the shade, uh, kind of across the river from the ruined city west of Sweetgrove. This should be east of the second shade. This one will flee you completely, not necessarily staying within bounds. Trap it again.

Once you've tried to trap all three shades, go back to the ghost in the stone circle and choose to fight it. When you kill it, enter the stone circle, and choose to take the item.

After all that, you should get the Ghostly Bracelet.

That 30% figure... is that of eligible voters? Turnout of registered voters hovers around 50%, I think, so that's a believable figure, given that a significant number of eligible voters aren't registered.

Part of the reason is intimidation: "I don't know anything about the candidates or issues!" This is exacerbated by the fact that, from what I understand, American ballots are ridiculously complicated compared to many other nations'. Those from outside the U.S., how many offices and issues do you have to vote on when the executive comes up for re-election?

For comparsion, on the last presidential ballot in Berkeley, CA, I voted on six offices (U.S. president, national Representative, national Senator, state Senator, state Assembly member, and local Rent Board member) sixteen state propositions, and twelve local measures for a total of thirty-four votes.
