Poison can be concocted by alchemy in Exile, but I don't think anyone uses alchemy to make poison.

—Alorael, whose sole use of poison comes from the Major Blessing spell, and if he could save a couple of spell points by omitting the poison he'd do so without a second thought.

I'd rather have villains firmly established and meaningfully portrayed in a way that isn't possible for interchangeable evils.

—Alorael, who doesn't think that's really possible in even A3. If you keep an eye out you'll notice that everything except the big, obvious planted evidence implicates the vahnatai.

Also Sweeney Todd. It's musically brilliant, witty, technically inventive, and really funny to boot.

—Alorael, who also likes Les Misérables. It's less funny and witty, but the two are really neck and neck for body counts, especially when you correct for cast size and start giving bit parts values less than one. (Three-fifths?)

I think maybe Meeksha is responding to a perceived lack of interest in Australian politics. The crap-eating neighbor isn't a reference to gay marriage specifically, it's a reference to why you need to pay attention to what's going on in the world.

Or so I posit, since that's the only way I can reconcile dog crap, neighbors, and not opposing gay marriage.

—Alorael, who has a strong suspicion that something is getting lost in translation. (From Italian? "Nodo" suggests so.)

Good puzzles can be integrated meaningfully. While the lasers seemed a bit out of place in Avernum on the whole, moving around mirrors to play with lasers actually made a fair amount of sense. That kind of puzzle works just fine. Riddles work only rarely, but I wouldn't want to categorically reject them.

—Alorael, who in fact wishes the crystal in the Golem Factory were indestructible except for laser beams. Make people think!

I haven't exactly been keeping up with the console world, but I think I prefer Sony. Nintendo has a few good offerings, but my tastes lean strongly towards strategy and RPG. All the RPGs migrated to Playstation and strategy belongs on the computer (specifically the Mac).

Actually, everything belongs on a Mac, but I'm biased.

—Alorael, who had the dubiously enjoyable experience of playing through Zelda: Ocarina of Time on his Mac. He'll stand by his statement but amend it to specify that things like joysticks also belong on Macs for some purposes.

Are we restricted to two dimensions?

—Alorael, who is experiencing visions of three dimensional chatting. It's rather disorienting, actually. Maybe an even number of dimensions would help keep things more balanced. 4D chat could be the next big internet fad!

Removal of waiting and interface things in Avernum 4

Member # 335

The reason space bar waits immediately and clicking requires verification is due to beta testing. It was too easy to accidentally end a turn while trying to move instead.

Waiting was also removed for a reason. The buff-wait-charge trick of getting a full round to attack in which the enemies don't respond made several battles much easier. Not being able to abuse that helps.

—Alorael, who can't say not being able to wait really makes sense. On the other hand, it has interesting tactical applications. Having slow characters is now almost as important as having fast characters, especially for taking out pylons and shrubs.

Lvl2 10 control panels in The Avernum Trilogy

I posted it before and I'll post it again: Rache's walkthrough makes everything easy. Or easier.

Make sure you've really activated (not deactivated!) all ten laser and that you're pressing the right buttons on the control panel.

—Alorael, who assumes that you've gotten to the control panel in the first place. If your problem is Rentar-Ihrno teleporting you away, there are two possibilities. If you have Erika's Amulet, you didn't get all the lasers focused. If you don't have the amulet, just keep charging Rentar-Ihrno until she can't teleport you away anymore.

Great barrier in The Avernum Trilogy

The trick with Doomguards is that you generally have one character who can do more damage than any other character. Bless, haste, and shield that character and have it attack. Don't let anyone else get close to the Doomguard. Kill the weakest copies first, and if damage is a problem try to keep your character against a wall so fewer Doomguards can attack simultaneously.

—Alorael, who usually goes with the running away strategy. Go into combat mode as soon as you get onto the right level and have only one hasted character approach the crystal. As soon as you've smashed it, start running. You can beat the Doomguard to the exit if you have only one character fleeing.

Starman, you've slipped over the line from funny to spammy. Stop posting all your base jokes everywhere where they are in no way relevant.

This is an official and officious warning.

It's not that difficult. There might be a secret door or two and possibily a magic barrier, though.

You're looking for a room on the upper level that's very close to the absolute southwest corner of the keep. Watch your automap for suspicious unexplored areas.

[Edit: Just use this map. The runes are at 12.]

—Alorael, who notes that this has been more or less said before.

It's possible to wade through quickfire, although it isn't fun. It doesn't do that much damage, so as long as you have priests and handy sources of quick spell point infusions you'll be fine.

—Alorael, who would probably just resort to character editing. Jekknol-Bok is held in the fort in Pyrog's cave.

Cheating is a victimless crime. Do whatever makes your game more enjoyable.

—Alorael, whose forums would be more enjoyable with jokes in moderation. Like skribbane! Gimmicks always go better when applied tastefully, not in every single post like this very signature.

I'm not sure which panel you're having trouble with, but sometimes you need to activate in a certain order or you'll find a laser blocking your path. Keep turning things off until you can get through, then turn them back on.

—Alorael, who thinks you should look for a pair of runes in a room in the southwestern part of the upper level of the keep. Drop pants on the western rune and step on the eastern rune. It's not really a shop, but it's entertaining.

If I were on fire maybe I'd be a little irritable and incoherent too.

—Alorael, who suspects Eddie is like many people who are his age. The problem is that it's very hard to give allowances for age online. And it's also hard to self-segregate without resorting to banning.

The exact procedure is very simple: don't revive topics that are months old unless you really have something important to add. It's a bit irritating.

On the other hand, nobody is likely to catch on fire or start howling for blood unless you do it with great frequency. No need to panic (or start howling for blood, really).

—Alorael, who thinks this topic can now happily die.

Polaris in General

Polaris, originally a nameless conspiracy, started over AIM to protest a banner insulting ADoS that was put up on the Miscellaneous section of Spiderweb. The original members were definitely Logo, ADoS, Slith (no longer around), SMoE (on Polaris but no longer here) and me. I may be missing a few.

The conspiracy became Polaris thanks to Logo's love of Escape Velocity: Nova. It moved onto an Ezboard, then a MyIB, then to a series of Invision boards. I may be missing a few here as well.

—Alorael, who supposes Polaris holds the distinction of being the most frequently redirected Spiderweb-associated conspiracy. It has had many different goals and many different members, and it has kept on conspiring right until the present day. It already controls the vertical and the horizontal and you don't even know it!

What makes one species fit isn't what makes another species fit. Bonobos are fiercely omnigamous. Some animals, particularly a few bird species, are fiercely monogamous. Humans are somewhere in the middle but closer to the birds.

—Alorael, who is unaware of any research done into polygamy genes. Surely it would be reasonable for a gene or several genes to control desire to have a single partner or many partners?

As long as you're not working on non-human macrobiology, you've got a shot at a Nobel Prize in chemistry or physiology/medicine. Nobody cares about the dik-diks.

Actually, that's strange, and it's even stranger that I never noticed.

—Alorael, who can't figure out which game Thuryl got wrong or what he omitted. "Silent Protagonist" is a bit general.

I used to collect wine corks. Then I realized that I had an enormous bowl full of corks and I got strange looks when I asked for the cork whenever anyone nearby had a bottle of wine.

—Alorael, who probably still has those corks somewhere. He should try to do something productive with them.

Donut: They're doughnuts, and I don't like them very much.

Spell circle: War. The simple pleasures are the best ones.

Jumping bean: There's only one nationality, but I'd love to have a Moroccan jumping bean.

Animal: Cat. Plain old ordinary housecat. They're just about the perfect pet.

Goal: Brevity.

—Alorael, who alas usually fails to maintain any manner of laconicity. In fact, while engaging in unabashed bloviation he often engages in illicit wordplay.
