Unfortunately, every kill made by your summoned minions earns you no experience. The more you summon the weaker you are. Granted, XP isn't exactly a problem in A4, but every little bit helps. —Alorael, who is in part prejudiced by earlier games in which summoning was entirely useless except when a smokescreen of cannon fodder was necessary. Fortunately, you're not limited to only one. Beastslayer is fairly useless, so you can go ahead and get another sword from Carmine. Slow level 3 is okay, although I rarely use slow, but you can get it from Hawke's Manse as well as Arion. That means you have no excuse not to be loaded down with wonderful weapons that increase your AP. —Alorael, who doesn't have the patience to wait for three Mithril Blades. Carmine is a slow blacksmith! Doesn't he know that adventurers have no patience? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The gate can't be opened or bypassed, so you can't get those research notes. You'll find enough elsewhere in the tower. —Alorael, who spent a moderately inordinate amount of time bashing into that portcullis. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I've seen Mac OS 9 with Dvorak added to it, although I don't know how. OS X has Dvorak along with a bewildering assortment of layouts and alphabets I've never heard of. —Alorael, who did take the opportunity to add Hebrew to his keyboard palette a while ago. It doesn't come in handy very often, but he still has high hopes. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Cairo Jim said nothing about legality. He gave a reason why churches tend to frown on homosexuality, and in churches churches' opinions hold a great deal of weight. It's not a good reason, but it's a reason. —Alorael, who can pick much better passages for opposing homosexuality. Nitpicking is possible, of course, but not quite as easy as with a commandment that doesn't mention homosexuality. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I've actually met more couples who kept their own surnames but combined them with a hyphen for their kids. What will the next generation do? The world isn't quite ready for Marie-France-Tessier-Ashpools. —Alorael, who also knows a couple that combined the first half of one name with the last half of the other. The result was understandably unique, particularly in light of the different national origins of the names. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If it helps at all, the order of exploration is a very close match to the order of exploration in A1. Start in the cave that becomes the Eastern Gallery in A4 (that's the Silvar-Fort Avernum-Duvno-Cotra area), do whatever you missed near Formello and Fort Dranlon, head south to Mertis and the Tower of Magi, then tackle the Great Cave. —Alorael, who would like to remind indefinite individuals that suggesting cheating in response to question that requests information is spam. Not egregious spam, maybe, but it's spam, and once was quite enough. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Tatterdemalion is one of my favorite scenarios, especially as one of the earlier ones, but I'm not sure how feasible having a different plot on every difficulty setting would be, especially for a larger game. —Alorael, who was impressed by the fact that the three different ambiences promised in the docs aren't just false advertising. And the terrain wasn't all wonky like in Islands of the Wheel! [ Wednesday, June 28, 2006 13:48: Message edited by: Command Space ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The problem is that sliths get a few nice benefits and nephils get absurdly useful benefits. Both outweigh the modest penalty, especially because the experience and leveling system reward experience penalties and disproportionately punishes disadvantages that should increase experience. —Alorael, who also wishes Avernum's primitive and frontier-like atmosphere had been played up, especially on the literal frontiers. Now it's too late, though. Normalized trade (presumably) with the Empire and relatively free flow of good and people means that nobody should be stuck with crude goods. If you've made the guards angry you've made them angry. There's no way around it except going around them. —Alorael, who will redundantly reiterate once again: nobody knows anyone of A3's SDFs. Yes, this does sound like the fourth test, and yes, you have to do them in order because only the door to the next test will open. The others just point you to tests you missed. —Alorael, who thought "control" was about controlling the battlefield so your mages don't get eaten. It was almost a real challenge. It's a good thing monsters are dumb. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If you have the Orb of Thralni, you can fly around the guardpost. If you don't have it, get it. You can easily avoid the guards by entering Lorelei from the north or east. You can go north around the west side of the lake to Moon, east to Bremerton, and then back south to Lorelei. I remember a shorter route but I can't remember what it was. —Alorael, who doesn't see how reading any recent topic really helps except to keep this topic from existing when another perfectly good topic exists. SMOKED? I go into asthmatic convulsions when other people smoke. I like my lungs inside my chest, thanks. GOTTEN DRUNK? I cannot truthfully answer this question. STOLE YOUR FRIEND'S BF/GF? I carried her off screaming into the night, but the pawn shop wouldn't take her so I had to give her back. PLAYED SPIN THE BOTTLE? No. GONE SWIMMING IN A WHITE T-SHIRT? Possibly. I don't own very many white T-shirts and I stay out of the water as much as I can, but I have gone swimming in T-shirts. It's not really that exciting anyway, is it? BEEN TO A NUDE BEACH? No. I also haven't been to many beaches, period. BEEN CHEATED ON? If so, it was done skillfully and secretly. BEEN WALKED IN ON WHILE YOU WERE DRESSING? Yes, both dressing myself and dressing others. BOUGHT SOMETHING WAY TOO EXPENSIVE? I'm not bankrupt so it can't really have been too expensive, can it? PLAYED STRIP ANYTHING? I haven't even played anything I can pun-twist into a strip game. PUNCHED YOUR PARENT? Not since I was two or so, and I'm only assuming I did when I was younger from experience with flailing children. GONE TO SLEEP NAKED? Frequently, although not regularly. RAN AWAY FROM HOME? No. WORE YOUR PAJAMAS IN PUBLIC? Not since I was little, but that's because I don't have any pajamas. I do have scrubs, which are the next best thing, and I've worn them in public. Doctors do it all the time, though, and nobody looks twice. DANCED IN YOUR UNDERWEAR IN FRONT OF SOMEONE? No. I also haven't done it beside, behind, beneath, or betwixt anyone. MADE UP A FAKE IDENTITY WHEN YOU MET SOMEONE? Do I have to answer this? BEEN IN LOVE? Yes. Oh, you mean with someone else? Still yes. GOTTEN A HICKEY? No. SLEPT IN A BED WITH A MEMBER OF THE SAME SEX /OPPOSITE SEX? Yes to both. Simultaneously. With non-family. Sometimes planning fails to account for the vicissitudes of life. HATED THE WAY YOU LOOK? Yes. I was bright blue at the time and I think everyone else hated how I looked too. CRIED YOURSELF TO SLEEP? Not since I was little. DONE SOMETHING YOU TOLD YOURSELF YOU WOULDN'T DO? All the time. SUNG IN THE SHOWER? No. BEEN TOO SCARED TO WATCH A SCARY MOVIE ALONE? Neither before the movie nor after the movie. LAUGHED SO HARD THAT YOU CRIED? I've definitely had to wipe my eyes after laughing, usually at someone. Several times it's been someone who had no idea what I found so funny. FORGOTTEN SOMEONE'S NAME? All the time. I hate it. CRIED OVER SOMEONE? Over other's misfortunes, yes. Over their absence or opinions, no. SKIPPED SCHOOL? No. GOTTEN EXPELLED FROM SCHOOL? No. DONE DRUGS? Only prescription drugs. Prescribed prescription drugs! GOTTEN A TICKET? To all kinds of events! GOTTEN IN A CAR ACCIDENT? Nothing worse than fender-benders. SCREAMED IN A LIBRARY? No. Libraries are sacrosanct. ASKED SOMEONE OUT? Yes. BEEN ON A PLANE? Yes. No snakes were involved. BEEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY? Yes. PASSED OUT? Yes. BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL? Yes, frequently. Also a few times as a patient, once after passing out. (No morally questionable behavior was involved!) HAD SURGERY? Yes. PLAYED A TERRIBLE PRANK ON SOMEONE? Terrible is such a strong word. Regrettable, perhaps. MOCKED SOMEONE? Welcome to Spiderweb. Leave your dignity at the door. FAILED A CLASS ON PURPOSE? Neither on purpose nor by accident. SEEN A GHOST? No. CRIED IN PUBLIC? On very rare occasions. BEEN HIT BY A PARENT? Only in the sense of collision. ATE DOG/CAT FOOD? I tried it. It's crunchy but not really that good. WALKED INTO A WALL AND/OR DOOR? I've walked into doors, poles, and important but flimsy support beams, but not walls. —Alorael, who has revealed his secrets! Now he has nothing left to live for except walking into a wall. Are you sure delivering the package harms your reputation? I know picking fights with Lorelei's guards over the package does, but you can go around them. —Alorael, who isn't sure how the other information is relevant at all. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
