The armed factions are to a great degree now more supported by drug money than by donations, although I'm sure America is still a significant source of income for the IRA (the Real IRA, responsible for the Omagh bombing, wasn't designated a banned terroist group until after September 11.) The situation's better than it has been, but I forsee the bloodshed lasting for a while yet, and it'll be generations before the hatred is gone completely. -------------------- Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned I'll tell you my story, man Though I wish I'd never been born I'm loose at the seams, I've broken my dreams And my hand it shakes the pen Come on, come on now baby, Let the good times roll again Posts: 961 | Registered: Thursday, June 12 2003 07:00 |

I think that was Hannibal, or possibly Septimius Severus, although it's one of those quotations that's horribly over-attributed.

It's not all the fault of the colonists. Some things they did were good. But in many cases they got out too fast (often because the natives were angry at a century of oppression) and took too many of the skilled workers with them. They also tended to hand over power to one tribe and not realise that this was going to cause trouble when the other tribe seized power. The bare bones of the economy were in place, but for example when Congo became independent, it had only 7 university graduates. Of course, much of the damage done to Africa has been done by Africans. But when you've got Cecil Rhodes as the founder of your nation, it's not that much of a change. Besides, Jeffrey Dahmer ate people too. The only difference is that he was outwardly normal and wasn't a head of state. As to the prosperity- I have a friend whose father works in South Africa. He's out in Pretoria right now. And you can bet that when he gets back he will not have met many black people. The wealth of Africa is still largely in the hands of whites living in compounds in the city.

She'd have been illegitimate, for a start. Of course, to describe the Industrial revolution (poverty and squalor on a scale never seen before in Britain since the 15th century,) the Victorian Age (workhouses, Matthew Arnold, Peterloo) and the reign of Elizabeth I (prosecution of Catholics) as high points in British history only tells one side of the story. Golden ages are only ever declared by propagandists and people writing centuries after the event.

Anyone got a personal philosophy they'd like to share? By that I mean the way that they ideally try to lead their lives, and which isn't a quotation from Buddha, Sun Tzu, Ambrose Bierce or indeed anybody but yourself.

No. Possibly actual bodily harm when she broke your nose. Is there still a Karelian nationalist movement, or did that die out with the end of the Russian civil war? -------------------- Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned I'll tell you my story, man Though I wish I'd never been born I'm loose at the seams, I've broken my dreams And my hand it shakes the pen Come on, come on now baby, Let the good times roll again Posts: 961 | Registered: Thursday, June 12 2003 07:00 |

America is not the Great Satan. But on the other hand, it could be so much better. That's the point. JF, I think you'll find that almost nobody outside the US thinks the Federal Government is too big, excepting things like the Department of Homeland Security. In truth, it sometimes seems that whilst the North may have won the Civil War, it lost the Federalist against Stateist argument.

I wouldn't personally say the post-war intervention in Italy was a wholly good thing. As I've already mentioned, the US went to great and dubiously legal means to get an anti-communist in power. Motrax, the Red Army did take Korea. That's the whole backdrop to the Korean War. You might also consider that by going from Sakhalin they got the Kurils, which are no more than a stone's throw from Hokkaido. I also seem to remember that Japan had made previous attempts to surrender through their ambassador to one power or another, but that was ignored. Does anybody know how the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs compared in terms of death tolls to the raids late in the war on Tokyo? -------------------- Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned I'll tell you my story, man Though I wish I'd never been born I'm loose at the seams, I've broken my dreams And my hand it shakes the pen Come on, come on now baby, Let the good times roll again Posts: 961 | Registered: Thursday, June 12 2003 07:00 |

Motrax, I would guess there isn't a single member of the 'far left' here who doesn't have friends with political views similar to yours. The disagreement with Dave tends to be mostly because he doesn't put things tactfully. Some criticisms made of him are just spoiling for a fight, but you can't say that every attack on him has been utterly unjustified. That's all by the by, because this topic has been a chronicle of American military adventures and you were vilified for moronic and malicious spamming. Anything else you see in it is your own bias. As I understand it, sales of metal to Japan stopped after Pearl Harbour, not before. Japan's reason for attacking was America's opposition to it ceasing the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) for the rubber there. Not dropping the bomb would have caused a coup? Considering the Army had been declaring war of its own accord for 15 years, I don't think that was a major issue. As to whether dropping the bomb saved lives, nobody can be sure, especially since the Americans have always stood by lower casualty figures than the Japanese estimates. What is certain is that if it hadn't been dropped, Hokkaido would have fallen to the Soviets.

I don't think that's likely to be necessary unless he repeats. Just can him. Motrax is smart enough not to care, but we might as well forgive him. Because otherwise we'll push away people like Sir David, and as much as reading these boards makes me cringe, I don't feel we ought to do that. Motrax will calm himself. TM tries to do what he thinks is right. Who wants to damn who with faint praise next? -------------------- Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned I'll tell you my story, man Though I wish I'd never been born I'm loose at the seams, I've broken my dreams And my hand it shakes the pen Come on, come on now baby, Let the good times roll again Posts: 961 | Registered: Thursday, June 12 2003 07:00 |

Nobody in their right mind thinks that every part of America's foreign policy has been wrong. The interventions in the Balkans had merit, whatever you think of the operation or the actions of the big four at Versailles. But is it false to say that every casus belli for the Spanish-American War of 1898 has been proved false? It is. So what's wrong with stating it? If you read up on the history, you'll find a second side to many of these stories. Italy was liberated from Germany to a large degree, and the only major injustice the US committed was trying to fix the elections to get an anti-communist afterwards, for example. If you want to post a catalogue of good reasons for the various military adventures, you are of course welcome to. If you can prove that the most heinous act the US ever committed was shortchanging the danes $0.50 when purchasing the Danish West Indies, I'd like to see it.

Given that St. George more likely dates to Diocletian's persecution or an earlier one due to his being a Christian soldier, he couldn't really have been a Muslim. That's always assuming there's a grain of truth in the story, which is doubtful.

I'm very bored, so I'm lurking. I should point out that fencing is only a sport for the lazy if you are very very good. Otherwise, prepare to flail, waste energy because you can't keep your movements small enough and start blinking due to the huge amounts of sweat covering your face. It's very tiring.

If there's one thing Harry Potter has done for literature, it's been to completely redefine the meaning of 'main character.' I haven't read it yet (I'll nick it when my father finishes it and waste a day reading it) but I'd already guessed the victim would be either him or Hagrid.

You see, the big problem with the law is that when we changed from stoning outsiders to giving anybody a chance to defend themselves no matter what they'd done, we didn't explain why to anyone.
