Hmmm... Is it technically possible to write a frequently asked questions list when the scenario doesn't exist and therefore questions aren't being asked? -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... Posts: 508 | Registered: Thursday, May 29 2003 07:00 |

Not that I'm saying in any way that this should be a factor in deciding the rating of the games, but some conservatives could be offended by the homosexual references to Nancy and (I forgot her girlfriend's name) in A1 and A2. -------------------- who? Hmm I'm not sure which option to vote because I spoke only Hebrew until the age of three, after which I started speaking English. Now I can understand Hebrew fairly well, but I don't speak it and use only English as my day-to-day language. -------------------- who? Posts: 508 | Registered: Thursday, May 29 2003 07:00 |

Why should scenario makers want to strip items like that from a player? If the player wants to play with those items, then he or she should be able to. Everyone has different ideas of how to get fun out of a scenario. Some people like tactical combat challenges, and some people think combat is boring and just want to skip it. For the latter type, let them use those items if they want to. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... Posts: 508 | Registered: Thursday, May 29 2003 07:00 |

How come everyone thinks of making purely beneficial items? It would be nice to have items that have good and bad in them, to actually have a decision in whether or not to use them. Sword of Mutual Death 199-199 damage 120 lbs. -4 AP Slows User Curses User Cursed Shield of Punishment Blocks ALL combat damage Each round deals you 5000 damage (to get you to zero) then heals you for 1. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... quote:1. I agree. 3. Not that simple, because it requires allocating more memory and might change the way the game stores and recalls the information. 4. Probably actually the easiest one to change. 5. Isn't very realistic (or at least realistic to the Avernum system) and completely destroys the game balance Jeff worked so hard to make by limiting the amount of gold one could carry. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... Dice in Blades of Avernum

Yes, I assume this will be possible through scripting. You could set any range of numbers to get the effect of different dice, and give the effect of a weighted die by making the range bigger and setting more numbers to give the desired result. (ex: a weighted die where 6 is twice as likely to come up as any other number: generate a random number from 1 to 7 and set 7 to give the result 6.) Hell, I bet you could even set up a game of poker using the BoA scripting system. I'm not sure if you could set up a new fighting system, but the one in the A3 engine looked pretty similar to different dice of different values. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... Yes that makes sense. While we're on the topic of infinity, as x approaches infinity, what is the value of sqrt(x^2 + x) - x ? -------------------- who? Posts: 508 | Registered: Thursday, May 29 2003 07:00 |

Augmented Creatures? in Blades of Avernum

1) Fetid zombies aren't augmented, I believe, they are their own monster class. 2) The advantage of augmented monsters would be to eliminate the need to create a whole new monster type if you're only using it once or twice. examples: Unholy Wyrm (Pit of the Wyrm), Wretched Demon (forgot where), Experimental something-or-other, etc. Whether an "augmented" creature reverts to its original type in a soul crystal isn't the only way of defining how it would be useful. If they could be made through scripting, it would also allow random monsters to be made: random stats, attack styles, even graphics. The possibilities are endless. You could make, say, a fetid zombie that had a 50% chance of spitting huge gobs of acid around the room every 2 turns, or Unholy Wyrms that had a 1 in 5 chance of spontaneously combusting and bringing the ceiling down. If you only wanted to use these once in the scenario, it would be more efficient to create a special instance of the monster than to create a whole new type for it. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... You could bypass the whole parsing step and realize that a combination of Y's and N's could be represented as a binary number. Three binary digits in sequence would be simply represented as a number from 0 to 7. To get back a value from that number, (assuming we can use bitwise operations in the BoA scripting system, which we may or may not be able to do) you would AND the given code with a certain number to see if an event has occured. In Churl's example, at the beginning of the sequel scenario, you would AND the code with 1 to see if Hawthorne was killed, you would AND the code with 2 to see if the surface was reached, and you would AND the code with 4 to see if Grah-Hoth was killed. In each of the cases the number would be compared to zero: a zero in each case would mean the event did not occur, anything else would mean it did. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... Actually, it sounds as though what you want will be accomplishable through scripts. I'm pretty sure there's a sample script of a door available on Spidweb's website somewhere, and you should be able to modify it to criminalize lockpicking. Wait for input from Drakefyre to confirm it, but I think you'll be in luck. -------------------- 5.0.1.0.0.0.0.1.0... Posts: 508 | Registered: Thursday, May 29 2003 07:00 |
