Of course, to a great extent it depends on the quality of the RP. I don't know how good the RPs were here long ago, but I do know that they have lately had a tendency to go rotten after 5-10 pages. The Baltazar RP is the only one that I've seen finished without major flaming and with something approaching coherence. I'm not sure about that Inn RP (you know the one with the two warring kingdoms on either side). Is that still going on, has it died, or has it been concluded?

What I do know is that high-quality RPs are a lot of fun. You've got to have the feeling that you're writing a story. Of course the ones with "I SLAAY T3H 3IVL OGRE KING WIHT MY MAGCI SWORT!!!11" are at best ridiculous, and at worst pathetic. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Is it feasible to think_files/rolleyes.gif)

MSW: An Exile RP is not the worst idea there is, but I suggest keeping RPs to General. After all, they're not directly concerned with the games, and RPs are more of a General topic. Avoid chaos here, I'd say. Or leastways even more than there is already.

In Windows, just normal painting programs. The custom graphics are bitmaps (*.bmp files). I usually use all three of PhotoEditor, MS Paint, and Adobe Photoshop 7, for different things. Works okay.

For Mac, I don't really know, you'd have to ask one of the mac users here.

Pthalos suddenly speaks up again. ((ooc: sorry guys, couldn't post earlier. And MSW, you both went away in your post before anyone could answer; assume this post to have started - chronologically - before yours ended)) Surprising himself, he had to a great extent understood what Aran had told them. He was not a mage by any means, and little learned in alchemy or other sciences, but the two elves who accompanied him in the other world for nearly a year had taught him much of the relations of elements and 'kedani', as they liked to term all sentient beings.

"What he means, basically, is that the stones that the Greywraiths are using seem to be much more self-aware than we assumed, and than stones usually are. They think almost like humans do. They might be originally humans transformed into stone through intense meditation. Aran is not sure about how aware the stones are of what is happening and what they're being used for. To counter the stones with their own magic, we shall need to get other magic stones to cooperate, since they are definitely not mindless, and will have to grant their power of their own will."

By now, Raitt and Frauline ((ooc: vaguely German-sounding by the way. In German, Fräulin means 'Miss')) had excused themselves and left for the chambers.

As they returned, a bit flustered and nervous-looking, Pthalos asked them what was wrong. Raitt replied, his face a little ashen.

"The rooms have been ransacked!"

((ooc: sorry for taking over your character there MSW, but I'm pretty sure that's what he would have said. If you object, just mention it and I'll edit.))

Seeing several others trying to pick up dropped staves and getting burned, Pthalos was relieved he hadn't tried to take the one of his opponent. Dodging another swung staff by ducking out from under it, he slams the sword down hard on the bare head of the fighter, splitting his skull. What an unbelievable luck he was having today. Deciding to withdraw for a while, Pthalos ran for a spot the Greywraiths had not reached yet. On the way, he got another hit from a heated staff, nearly missing his neck but scalding his shoulder. Luckily, it was his right - he was left-handed.

IC: Pthalos was just about to get another one of his frequent fits. These people had the AUDACITY - of course that was not the word Pthalos used, he preferred shorter ones - the AUDACITY to lock them in a room, and then bring them out and stage an attack so they would have no choice but to fight their enemies? This was a bloody *arena*!

Pthalos began to wish he had chosen to become a mage instead, some spells would be useful now. But he had nothing except his sword, and his ring was up in the room; he had only brought his weapon after all, nothing else.

One of the Greywraith fighters came for him; he deflected the blow of the staff in a flurry of brilliant sparks - Lucky I brought a steel blade. Iron couldn't withstand that kind of heat I guess. - and did not stop, but ran onwards. The next fighter he passed managed to get in a blow to his, well, his posterior end. It did not burn through the leather, but it was still extremely painful.

That was the final straw. Pthalos exploded in a flurry of steel once more, shouting obscenities. He was not Pthalos now, he was Rendall. Rendall the berserk.

"You just wait, you —ing goblin. They don't call me Rend-all for nothing!"

The clan fighter narrowly missed Rendall's nose with his staff; he could feel the heat on his face; droplets of sweat formed on his forehead. But even a strong, dextrous fighter with a super-heated staff has to make mistakes on occasion, and in this case it was miscalculating the swing. Had Rendall been hit, his head would have been knocked straight off by the force of the blow. But the staff passed through empty air, and a metal staff has quite a weight. The warrior spun to the side, pulled by his own blow. He quickly reversed the swing to get in another one, but not fast enough. A single swordthrust to the face was all Rendall needed: The steel blade crunched into his enemy's head with a sickening noise. Twitching, the Greywraith warrior crashed to the floor, burying the heated staff beneath him. There was a sizzling and the smell of burnt flesh.

((ooc: I'm assuming they aren't invulnerable against their own staffs, are they?))

His rage satisfied for the moment, Pthalos Vinasray surveyed the raging battle around him. He couldn't believe his luck - these fighters were far above him in skill and strength. But not in rage. Maybe I should try to take that staff, it certainly seems like a powerful weapon. But Pthalos could not grab the hot end, and turning over the body to get at the grip would have taken too long. Besides, he didn't know how it worked, and with a red-hot rod of iron, the trial-and-error way was risky to say the least.

OOC: Sorry Zephyr, I missed the bit where you fell back.

I'll post another IC when the others post again. Enraged SLith, it would help if we knew how the plot is supposed to continue. Are we supposed to escape? Are we supposed to attack the guys who imprisoned us? Or should we wait to see what they want of us? To stay well in character, I shall have to make Rendall *extremely* angry once a guard shows up. He's so short-tempered that he might almost count as choleric. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards New RP The Greywraith Clan1_files/wink.gif)

OOC: I'm going to make a prediction, because that's something I like to do. This RP will get to page 6, maybe 8, then break down in flames. Zephyr, don't argue because it's unnecessary, it is a *fact* that you are ridiculously god-playing your character. Not even Mancire was this bad, and he was half drake IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards New RP The Greywraith Clan1_files/rolleyes.gif) . And at least make whole sentences, it's extremely hard to read your posts.

IC:

Pthalos 'Rendall' Vinasray was getting angry. And it's a bad mistake to allow Pthalos to get angry, because he has only so much tolerance for angriness, then he explodes in a rage. Getting locked in a room unexpectedly was, while not one of his pet peeves, definitely a sure-fire way of getting Pthalos angry.

He managed to restrain himself for almost ten seconds, which was almost a personal record for him in this respect.

Then, he let out a furious shriek and launched himself at the door, a flurry of steel, fists and feet. He began to attack the door, hitting it everywhere with every strength he could muster. He got in about one punch and one strike with his sword before the force-field kicked in. Because Rendal went on hitting the door as minor charges were released, oblivious to the pain, it took quite a discharge to stop him...

He was veritably lifted off his feet, he shot through the room whirling around, until he slammed into the other wall and lay still. Unfortunately for him, he was *not* knocked out cold. Unfortunate because it meant he took a run at the door *again*. In the end it took three of the others to restrain him. He was actually frothing at the mouth. He struggled for a few seconds, then managed to get a grip on himself.

"Okay, so we're trapped in here except for that curious deity who seems to have stepped out with ease. Us common mortals still have some things to learn apparently. Let's just forget about him.

"And I have an idea: They're going to have to feed us at some point, and I don't see how they're gonna do it without opening that door, if you get my point."

OOC: Zephyr, you got what's coming to you. And if you open the door from outside in some impossible and illogical way, I'll scream. In CAPS. With exclamation marks!!!!!!!!! Thank you.

I still have that encyclopedia in my sig (related to BoE and BoA both), but it's extremely undeveloped and has next to no content (apart from a debatable line of emperors, a short and far from complete list of monsters with descriptions, some unfinished maps etc.)

But if you include Karzoth's, then mine is okay as well, his site doesn't have more content. :P
Btw, roundabout June next year I'll be completely free of school responsibilites for a year. I'll do some part-time jobs or a practical, but I'll have a lot of time. If you don't get this webring off the ground till then (*smirks*), I'd be happy to help. :D

OOC: Okay, seeing as the last RP worked out so well, this time I'll be a little more daring.
I'll make a PC from scratch (I made Eferas from scratch, but it was over half a year ago). This time I'll just post someone as he comes into my head (yes, he. I don't feel skilled enough to do 'cross-dress' RP-ing yet).

Okay.

Let me introduce Pthalos 'Rend-All' Vinasray, called Rendall for the occasional bouts of berserk rage that grip him, his most major handicap. (You may call him Pthalos or Rendall, each will do, but until you know him better you shouldn't use his nickname.) He feels embarassed as well as proud about this nickname, and when someone mentions it his reaction - and frequently the caller's life IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards New RP The Greywraith Clan1_files/tongue.gif) - depend on his mood and the tone in which it was said. If he feels he's being mocked, woe to the mocker!

All right. Let's move on to the appearance. He's very nearly as short as his temper, reaching no more than 1.66 meters (that's five feet). He's on the lean side and carries barely sixty-five kilograms (130 pounds I think but am not sure). His general frame might almost be described as 'scrawny', but only very quietly and certainly not within a mile of his ears.

His calloused hands are resting on a smallish sword grip, but as your eyes follow the outline of the sword down the scabbard, you can see that the grip is the only thing small about it - it's more than half as long as he himself is! In the bit of the blade that sticks out of the scabbard, the trained eye can make out the glint of burnished steel - uncommon for these times where the average adventurer's pay will buy you an iron shortsword if you're lucky. He inherited it; it might well be his most valuable possession.

His face, like his arms, are quite tanned, but not brown. His stubby nose, and his large, protruding ears, once again, are among the many things about him that should not be brought to discussion by anyone except suicidal maniacs.

Pthalos' eyes are brown and approaching almost black. There's a glint inside them that matches that of his sword as he fixes a steely glare upon you, and quietly mutters "Have you finished gaping yet, or should I just run you through now?"

---

Now move on to some of his history:
Pthalos was born about thirty-nine years earlier in a continent known as Parth on the faraway world of Lyr (I made that world up a month ago or so, almost finished the map IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards New RP The Greywraith Clan1_files/biggrin.gif) ).

Pthalos already has had some exciting adventures behind him, most notably an excursion into a Chaos dimension and slaying really cool stuff. In his homeland, however, there's been a glut of mercenaries all the time during his career. While he managed to find some employment on the other continents, he has finally decided to leave this horribly boring, uncomfortably civilized world behind and seek adventure elsewhere. And that, approximately, is how he came to be on this boat.

(forgive the wordiness, but I'm practicing for a writing competition right now and I need all the training I can get IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards New RP The Greywraith Clan1_files/wink.gif) )

IC:

Pthalos woke with a start. He heard a shout from one of the sailors, but did not immediately recognize what had been shouted. There it came again.

"LAND! LAND ho!"

In a matter of less than two minutes, Pthalos had changed his clothes. Before three minutes had passed, he was standing up on the deck and gazing at the direction that the sailor had pointed out. Indeed - a strip of solid ground was already visible on the horizon, possibly no more than a few miles away.

Rendall got back into his cabin and took what else he had in the way of possessions. It was not much; just a worn overcoat and a small leather sack with another set of clothes, a few daggers, a healing potion or two... and of course the artifact that the High Priest Carhdon had given him after he had completed the quest in the Chaos dimension. A smallish unadorned ring, shining with the cold radiance of silver. he had never really gotten to test its power; he had run into no really dangerous situations since the quest that had earned him the ring. The priest had given it to him, while the priestess had said that its power lay in protection and defense. All right, she'd cloaked it into more words than that; she was an elf.

Arriving back on the deck with his leather armor and his sword strapped on, his overcoat thrown over his shoulders and the little sack over his left arm, Pthalos leaned against the railing, waiting for the ship to close in on the island.

OOC: MSW, when you said 'boat', did you mean the ship we're on? Because it might also be a small boat in which you left the ship together with the sailor in order to land. Common practice when a ship arrives at a place where there's no harbor, and the ship can't get close enough to land because of its depth. However, this island is inhabited and civilized, so I'd say there's probably a port. Ah well, I'd better stop rambling now. OOC: I don't know if I should stick around for longer, but I'd rather have a nice, concise exit than have it dribble off, much like Omlette. So what I'll do is this. I'll pre-post my exit; you can still resolve the RP and even move Eferas around, but this is the scene just after he leaves, sort of in the future.

***

IC: Back at the port city, Eferas found that the mercenary ship with which he had traveled here had anchored once more. Eferas was a bit baffled by this, but assumed that it must have been brought about by some means of plot advancement. The mercenary captain greeted him and offered to take him back to the Santharian shores.

Eferas readily accepted.

With a last wave to his companions, he turned to the ship's gangway and boarded it. As the ship was out of sight, Eferas put his hand in his pocket again. This time it came out with a little dark scrap of cloth, lovingly caressing the fine material.

He chuckled.

Nobody had observed him as he tore off the little strip before burning it and hid it inside his pocket. Back at the magical academy, it would fetch him hisn own weight in gold, he was sure. Enough of a reward to make up for the adventure... IMAGE(biggrinC.gif)

OOC: Actually, Eferas is comatose from overdraining. In the fantasy world that he usually inhabits, this kind of coma can last for up to two weeks! However, for the sake of a nice, swift end to this RP, I'll wake up. IMAGE(wink0008.gif)

IC: Eferas stared at the pitiful remains of the robe that Kel-Aziz had handed him.

"And what shall I do with this? I cannot take it back to the academy, they'd take it from me and analyze every particle of it to replicate the spell. And we don't want that. I have an idea, however."

He drew the small obsidian dagger that was coated in sulfur. Murmuring a single word, he causes it to come alight with a brilliant flame. The strain of this single spell was visible from the perspiration immediately forming on his forehead.

Making a small and forceful movement, he jerked the robe away, flung it to the ground, and buried his hand in his pocket for a second. It comes out with the pouch of sulfur, which he libberally strews over the robe. With a single thrust of the flaming dagger, he incinerates the robe, and waits until the last embers have died.

"There. There won't be one of those again so soon."

Satisfied, he steps back. His posture has suddenly become twitchy, and he is rather nervous, as he speaks again.

"Will there be anything else?"

I thought chips were etched with laser, aren't they? Acid would probably be far too inaccurate for the tiny contacts. Of course, lasers require a lot of electrical energy, but they're by far not as polluting in their usage as acid.

I don't, but I'd sure like to. I'm going to learn it first chance I get (which would be after I finish school in a year, since there's too much other stuff right now). Yes, I'm attracted to petrified and artificial languages, they're cool even though most say they're useless. I intend to learn Esperanto some time too.

1.) You can pass threatening comments or even flame the signature-thief. In most cases, flaming won't even be necessary. Being an oldbie on this kind of board gives you privileges and power. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards I am new here_____1_files/wink.gif)

Edit: Following the hint from Alo, of course I have to add that being a moderator gives you even *more* privileges and power. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards I am new here_____1_files/tongue.gif)

2.) Maybe. But there are still some outright ***s on the web. Not many of them are here, but still.

3.) That's what communication on the internet is all about, isn't it? Appearing intelligent, original, creative, etc. in front of people you'll never meet. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards I am new here_____1_files/tongue.gif)

The only RPG game I prefer to the Exile/Avernum series is ADOM, which is an ASCII-character based game. No graphics at all. Good for the imagination. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards will spidweb ever change1_files/wink.gif)
