OOC: Gnnngh. :o *reads over CD again* I'd say those, ah, idiosyncrasies as you tactfully call them are more influenced by my time zone than my mother tongue, if you catch my drift. :P -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! Zephyr. If you'll look closely at the characters that were accepted, and the characters that weren't, you'll notice the 'unwritten' requirements. If you still don't see, here, let me show you: (*notices that TM has in the meantime already explained to Zephyr how to make a char description. Well, this example was fun to make, anyway.) ((what's he going to do now, participating in an RP with one week to go to semester finals in the Senior high school year?!? Anyway. I'll do this one IC just to keep in practice.)) If I was wrong in deducing and this kind of character won't get me in, feel free to laugh. Razrocc Onallas Yeshri, called "Roy" by his friends, was in a glum mood. Again. There's not much else to choose from in the way of moods when you're sitting in a bar trying to drown yourself in noxious beverages. Which was almost precisely, if figuratively spoken, what Roy was doing ? and had been doing every day for nearly a week now. The events that had led to him taking up that particular pastime, normally distasteful to him, was a long story that applied, in one version or another, to half the glum unemployed mercenaries in any pub and as usual had to do with his last employers. Roy was a sorcerer. At least that's what his kind liked to call themselves. They were probably as far from the sorcerers of fable as energy rays were from crossbows, but the same principle applied. The comment on all his identification and employment references was "Specialist on Mental Matters". Nowadays the people were as scared of his kind as they had been in those days, and they preferred not to speak of such things outright. But it was enough to take one look at him to recognize him as a Psi-wielder. The stature alone, tall, his frame narrow to the point of being skinny, his skin so unweathered that nobody could mistake him for a fighter. Unbelievably long, slender fingers. A lot of shoulder long very dark hair hung down from his head, falling down onto his neck, onto a long black robe with the hood pulled back. There was a deep, enigmatic expression on his face, even in this mood, with the evening already half sunk in drinking. His dark black eyes, standing out in his pale narrow face might be slurred by the intoxication, but they were still piercing as Roy gazed at every single detail of the bar in turn just to keep occupied. His thin, but dark brows creased as he frowned again, remembering with irritation his last employment. A routine job, they had said, and it had turned out to be. But as many who doubted or denied the power of Psi users, there were at least as many who overestimated them. It would have been a standard mission, but the people who had hired him had made him out to their superiors like some magical wonder machine that would walk alone into the heart of the fray and cut down with ease anything that opposed him. So they had hired no one else, saving almost nine tenths of the budget. As an apprentice advanced not even to the fifth tier, Roy was far from what could be called powerful. He could shield, he could read thoughts as long as the opponent was not skilled at the powers himself, and he could throw a small blast to incapacitate opponents, which he could precisely adjust in strength to do anything from mildly confusing to concussing or even killing. That and a minor talent at telekinesis, which allowed Roy to be somewhat adept at picking locks, was all he had been equipped with when he had faced his task. What had happened could have been expected. Roy managed to accomplish in part what he had been instructed to do, but had to retreat in the end. The contract cancelled, Roy had lost all of his pay except for the meager advance payment. Which he was now, bit by bit, soaking in what passed for booze in here. He had heard the rumors as well of course. The city was said to be liable to be attacked any day now. Well, so the much better for him; he might at last get a chance at some pay again. Accepted? :) I might have to drop out suddenly due to work pressure, but I'll give advance notice in that case. Mmh, let's see. I'd make it illegal to teach economics. No, that's just a joke. I think I'm generalizing, there have to be *some* intelligen economics teachers. But a good idea might be to enforce that a global language be learned by everyone as a second language to help along communications. Come to think of it, I'd make it a law to learn at least one second language; it seems to make people think more coherently. That's about all I can think of for now. Come to think of it, I have a number of *very* amusing thoughts about what should be done to a number of goverment officials in a lot of countries, but that would hardly serve any long-term benefit. Just send them off to a sunny little island with some psychiatrists to attend them. Yes, in the end a global monarchy is too fragile to hold, because a lifetime is not enough to get it under control. You just have to arrange it so the people can govern themselves. [ Monday, December 08, 2003 14:14: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! 1. Hard choice here. A separate peace was mildly boring, but nothing could beat Anne Tyler's "Slipping-down Life" and Willa Cather's "My Antonia". Well, maybe "My Brilliant Career". Take your pick. You know, all that rubbish you read in Middle School English class when the teachers still deem you unready for Shakespeare. 2. The music I remember is the stuff I like. Call it selective memory. 3. I don't watch TV except for news, and go to see movies about 4-5 times a year. So I don't get opportunities to see a lot of bad movies, as I only see the ones I'm sure I'll like. If my sister had succeeded in dragging me in there, American Pie would've ranked first choice here. Especially after she told me about it. So you noticed the bug too, Alec... Concerning my reading speed: I finished the fifth Harry Potter in one single, very *long* evening. I think it must have been 6-7 hours or so. I'd have thought the real devout Fundies would have been deterred from the spidweb boards by the blasphemy in the games. There's MAGIC in there!! Burn the witches, burn them!!11 Sorry. I get like that once in a while. If I don't do it too often I won't get canned for it I guess. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. Maybe I'm just addicted to cliches, but I absolutely love both Tolkien and Eddings. David Eddings's plots are predictable maybe, but that means they are wonderfully relaxing to read. But I wouldn't ever want to RP with the guy; he tends toward god-characters. And I like all the Middle-Earth stuff (Hobbit, LotR, Silmarillion, Letters from Middle-Earth, etc.) exactly because they paint such a vivid picture of a fictional world. Compared to normal books, it feels like a picture you can step into to enter another world. Also, Ørangutan (sorry for bringing this up after 2 pages) I write Tengwar almost as fluently as our letters. Alternative alphabets are so much fun. Terry Brooks is good enough, I suppose, but he has the tendency to tragically kill of 3/4 of his characters. A few tragic deaths are in order, but when I read the Travels of the Jerle Shannara, I thought "Geez, which side is he on?" TGM was joking. It's the way Spidweb members are, most of them can't take anything seriously. You, on the other hand, seem a little too gullible. You should have caught the hint once he said he can't read. And if you think it's possible that he can't and was saying — no, typing! — the truth, then, well... *lol* [ Saturday, December 06, 2003 09:40: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! I think you can change combat speed in the preferences. On the character slots, I'm afraid you're stuck with what's in Avernum 3; Jeff's not liable to change stuff, especially this far into development. He'll probably do something about the bugs though. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. So if Jeff's making enough money now, why should he experiment with changing the price to see if he can make more? It's true that games are as a rule price-elastic (Economics, anyone ?), but they're not so widely known that a change in price will have much of an effect on sales, I think. People who really want this kind of game will be willing to pay the price. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. You know, I think you're overestimating the workload involved. Okay, a good graphic program (as in Photoshop or else ) will help a lot, but you can do it without any 3d, and usually in 1-2 hours if you've got nothing else to do. Powerful computer? You should try to get your hands on some program with 'Photo' or similar inside it, 'PhotoPaint', 'PhotoShop', 'PhotoEditor', 'PhotoImpact' to supplement Paint. Frequently you will want to change the colors easily without having to repaint, and afaik Paint can't do it. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. George W. Bush obviously doesn't qualify. The plant might win, if it wasn't a bush. So the goblin with Alzheimer it is. And TM, Motrax came up with a more original way of spamming an anti-Bush topic, if that's what you've got in mind. Things like that are best forgotten, but history shouldn't repeat itself, should it? As far as I know, he hasn't made them yet. Stuff needs to be *really* bad for it to get deleted here. Nothing you'd expect Lord of Evil to come up with. He tries his hand at spamming, but he hasn't got the hang of it yet - his mind is not twisted enough to post really bad stuff, and he is a too kind soul to be truly offensive. So all he'll probably ever get is canned, not banned, and topics locked, rather than topics deleted. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" Much as I want to defend the Exile series, I have to agree that Exile I was a huge disappointment. I didn't play Avernum before Exile I, but I played Exile III first, and the poor graphics and interface were sorely disappointing. I never even fully explored the demo version of that game. A pity that Jeff probably won't ever update Exile I to have the same interface as Exile III, since it has a fascinating storline that cannot be completely replaced by Avernum I.
