Which tomb? Is that on the surface, or in Upper Exile?

Also, thanks Thuryl. Actually, those maps are still pretty rough, I'm working on a new version of Vantanas with thinner coastlines and better mountains and stuff, after I got some advice from the guy who 'invented' the technique. :)

Make it A, I'd say as well. Currently, I wait 3-5 minutes for the search to load, and that's with a DSL connection, and not downloading anything else.

Usually, Imban, when closing a thread, moderators are supposed to give... well... reasons? Rather than a weird picture? Or did I miss a change in the policies there? IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Greywraith closed_files/confused.gif)

The Matrix in General

You can certainly see a few parallels in the story, but not in the symbolisms. The 'Grey Men' (whatever did they call them in the English version?) can't be compared to agents, and the world they live in is definitely not like the Matrix.

The Matrix actually symbolizes Plato's Cave Allegory, where the people are trapped in an unreal world and do not want to see reality.

"Momo" is about people having more time for their children, or at least something approximately like this. There is no 'enemy' in that sense, the enemy is supposed to come from humans themselves (the quote runs something like "they [the grey buggers] exist because the people have allowed them to exist".

That's a bit hard... I suppose you could, with some effort, script 'underwater' terrain, and even include a 'diving suit' item or something.

Since no one mentioned yet what continents there actually are on the surface of Ermarian:

There's Pralgad (though some prefer Pralgrad), which is the main seat of the empire. It's a medium sized continent, which is in approximately the shape of an inverted triangle or a heart (I'm doing this from memory, folks, the exact shape eludes me currently).

Edit: I found a map of it. I only started it, and it hasn't got more than the outline, but you should get the general picture: Clicky.

Where it grows thin at the bottom, it is connected by a land bridge to the north part of Valorim, the most recently colonized continent. Valorim (the setting of Avernum/Exile 3) is shaped roughly like an L pointing towards the West, which the Isle of Bigail resting in between the two stems.

Aizo (some spell it Aixo) was the continent where the empire was founded. I'm not sure about it's size or shape, but I remember it lies somewhere southeast of Pralgad.

Then there's Vantanas, of which you can find an incomplete map here . It's to the south of Valorim, and has tropical climate. As far as I know, it's barely civilized, I guess the Empire's foothold is mostly for the resources. But who am I to know? :P

Did I leave out any? Any official (Avernum series) ones I mean?

Edit: Geocities sucks bad; links never seem to work. If you don't receive the image, just click on the address window to select the URL of the picture, and hit Enter again. That should do it.

Just for the sake of poetisizing a bit: I just finished editing this here piece once more, it seemed a bit crappy the last time I posted it... *brushes a little dust off his poem*.

The Ballad of Erika Redmark

Erika was a sorceress
Whose power blessed Ermarian
She fell in disgrace with the Crown
And was cast down to Avernum

Her power was beyond all thought
And so she wrought most mighty spells
To nourish life in deepest cave
And keep it save from utmost hells.

But as time passed, her mind did turn
To wrathful, churning thoughts of hate
For ere the wizards cast her down
They cursed her thus to seal her fate:

That ever, if the light of sun
Should touch upon her skin again
Demonic ire and blazing fire
Consume her in the instant then.

And so her fury smouldered fey
At seeing day for nevermore
And soon she plotted full of gall
The tyrant's fall and death through gore.

A party then - for thus they named
Adventurers in days of old -
Was magicked up to Hawthorne's place
And slew His Grace and got their gold.

Years later said an Avernite
That surface light'd be pretty nice.
So up they went, a party bold,
To seek the gold of Sunlight's rise.

The Vahntai meanwhile, did strive
With all their lives to thwart this end,
With monster plagues of slime and steel
They did conceal their true intent.

So Erika went up herself
To aid the heroes in their plight
And battled Rentar-Ihrno there
But Rentar brought the deadly light

Into the caves, and on the spot
A blaze as hot as brightest star
Consumed the mighty sorceress.
Renownèd archmage Erika.

I like the background music from Sierra's 'Zeus' and 'Poseidon' so much that I sometimes listen to it even when playing other games, or doing work. It's so relaxing.

And Lords of Magic (even though I only ever played the demo and that briefly) has absolutely wonderful themes for the different Elements. I'm listening to the Order, Water and Air themes right now; wonderful music. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Best song in a game1_files/wink.gif)

You don't need to apply anywhere. Custom titles are a thing you get. One day, it's there. And sometimes, on very rare occasions it is even one you will be happy with. As far as I know, direct requests for a custom title have often been answered with such, but rarely a nice one, and never the one requested. OOC: Hope this helps to revive it.

IC: "I guess that is what it just said." Pthalos replied; patience had never been one of his few virtues.

"I don't want to know what it's going to do to the Greywraiths though. I've heard that some sentient crystals can put forth power through their vibrations or something, destroying anything in their vicinity. Don't get one mad at you."

As Aran prepares to come out of his meditation, Pthalos was already impatiently pacing the room again.

Graphics or a good story? in General

I prefer plot over graphics, because it allows me to feel elitist. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Graphics or a good story1_files/tongue.gif) Smarter than all the masses who can't grasp a complex plot anyway. A way of boosting your ego you see. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Graphics or a good story1_files/biggrin.gif)

Btw, I think ASCII actually doesn't detract from a game as much as poor graphics. If I had to choose, I'd prefer ASCII code to Exile graphics, because Exile-quality graphics aren't all that good and certainly sometimes interfere with gameplay (such as when several monsters have the same graphic, like Ur-Basilisk/Basilisk, Drake Lord/Dragon, etc.). In ASCII, all monsters are color-coded, allowing you to distinguish between hundreds of monsters with one glimpse. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards Graphics or a good story1_files/biggrin.gif)

Winzip can do it as well, fyi. Just insert the first floppy, create an archive on the disk, and add the file to it, checking the option that says "several disks", or similar. When the first disk is full, it will ask you to change disks.

When you've got it compressed, be sure to insert the last disk first when opening the archive on the other computer, because on the last disk is where the info about the archive in general is stored, like how many disks it contains etc. When you click Extract, it'll ask you to insert all disks in turn again, and you're done. So the obvious solution would be to wait till Imban's asleep, and then start an RP and really get going so by the time he comes back it's too far gone to kill off. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards im might sound stupid but____files/tongue.gif) Uh, forget I said that. Just a joke. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards im might sound stupid but____files/wink.gif)

But really, why not join an RP that's already going? It's not as if the RPs are locked to new players entering. You should, though, read the earlier posts to get an idea of what the plot is. And then, just post a short character description, and make an entrance to the scene. IMAGE(Spiderweb Software Boards im might sound stupid but____files/smile.gif)

Edit: You asked for links to active RPs. I'm putting them together here: (Note that some of the RPs are far gone in plot, and you might not be able to join them now. No guarantees.)

As I said, it just depends on where you're playing. No one will care here, as long as you don't make their character do really dumb stuff.

Oracle, the problem of having one character acting at a time is only an apparent one. You base it on the assumption RP posts need to follow consecutively, chronologically. That is not so. Usually when someone else has posted a scene in an RP, I go on in my next post to redescribe the scene from my point of view, focusing on what my character is doing. You get the happenings split up in separate posts (inevitable in any play-by-post game), but they're still simultaneous.

The tutorial I linked to mentions one really cool solution to describing your own action only in an interaction. The way they do it is as long-winded and intricate as an exercise in acrobatics. Remember, doing this is completely unnecessary in most places including this, but the example is to show you that it can still be done.

quote:

Originally written by Drogo:

And yes, sometimes it may be difficult to make things happen when you have to remember all the "passive" people that surround me.
To take a recent example of how you might take care of that...
Once upon a time, there was The Jolly Roger Bar. A tavern thread of which Cool. One was the founder.
A lot was happening at once. And I felt I should reply to everyone at once, being after all the barkeeper. (Yep, being extremely modest here again, to take one of my own posts as an example...)
Someone by the name of ScareCrow asked me to show him his room, but he was still sitting at his table. A little bard had just entered, and needed medical attention (amongst other side-plots...) So I had to find a way to get to the rooms for ScareCrow, then down again to hand out orders, all in one post, because if I had to wait for ScareCrow to answer first that indeed he had found his room and entered, downstairs things might have got out of hand.
This is what I posted:

With that said, Cool. One left his bouncer, and returned to the table in the corner. He grabbed a lit torch from the wall and spoke.
"Your room, sir... Follow me..."
Cool. One mounted the stairs, and with a vague gesture of his arm motioned towards the long corridor with doors on both sides.

"They are all empty... Just choose one... The lock is on the inside, no key needed. However, if you choose to stay for a longer while, you can come to me and ask for the key so that you may close the door when you go out without your belongings...
Now if you'll excuse me... Sounds like things are going on..."

Cool. One bowed shortly, and made his way downstairs again.

I could have said that ScareCrow was right behind me, but I didn't. He could still be at his table, or he could be behind me on the stairs, or already ahead of me in the corridor. That was up to him in his next post...

(sorry, I once again seem to go on and on when talking about RPing... . Better stop rambling.
